That's basically what I call the core gameplay, the engine, what it allows you to do. And that's fine, it's fun, well developed. But that ought to basically just be part of the game, not all of the game. Because apart from this core aspect, the game simply doesn't offer enough.
'Mount and Blade' is a good example of such a style. It pretty much has no story and such, but the core aspect, the key gameplay, is just so bloody damn addicting that I could go on for days. Both games in that respect are sortof... arcade style, like a very advanced pinball game. But FC2 came with quite some pretensions, the trailers showed what seemed involving story choices, factions that actually bother trying to be a faction, buddies that matter more. The second part of the game is much better compared to the first in that regard; buddies were introduced in a more...stitched-into the game way, instead of just 'oh look, a house, a buddy'.
But yeah, the core stuff is good, fun enough for me to play through all of it really. I've probably been a bit too harsh in my other post. It's just that I've gotten slightly...sceptical about games lately. I'm more and more finding out that stuff often isn't added because it adds to the fun part of a game but just because it makes a nice bullet point on the box (Radiant AI!) or because it lengthens the game (200 hours of gameplay!).
And I'm really a bit of an Aristotelean in that regard; a game, like a person, ought to aim at fulfilling its essential purpose to the fullest. And it just sometimes feels like developers forgot what a game is supposed to do nowadays.
Edit: Oh and I probably played through it a bit too fast while under time pressure anyway, I remember now. Hectic time for studying, still wanted to play a game. That's never added to the fun part. But in the end I guess, I had quite some fun, but expected more than was delivered. As with a lot of games these days...damnit, I really, really wish I could enjoy games like I did in the olden times. But I guess back then I had seas of time, now I've got seas of research to do.
