Far Cry 2

Unless they drastically increased the amount of ammo you could carry, that would have been a huge pain in the ass (especially on infamous, where you're already ammo-starved as it is).

About 10 hours in, and I give it a resounding meh

Game has its moments. I love causing a panic by stealthing close and then tossing a grenade at an ammo box or a molotov in the brushes. The real difference between approaching a fight like that and just running in shooting is good.

I also like picking bullets out of my arm with my teeth. Go Rambo Action Go!

The actual meat of the game is whoah-nelly bad, tho'. Checkpoints that respawn way too quick? Boring, repetitive fights over and over as you run into machine gun trucks at least once a trip? Heck, unrealistic/stupid driving? Bad map interface? And, worst of all, repetitive, boring, samey missions.

So I'm basically going through a lot of trouble to speed through or avoid guard posts, often having to fight anyway despite my intention not to (why are these people so intent on dying anyway?) only to pick up the crappy plot in boring-ass missions?

Fail.

Epic fail.

Agreed, its that kind of approach that would make this game awesome, but when they totaly remove the possibility to do stealth attacks, its ends up with EPIC fail...

Aaaand fuck this game.

20% into the main quest and one runs into the first game-stopping bug, seemingly caused by rescuing a buddy too early (wtf?).

Nothing like a game-stopping bug to kill any interest you had in a not-great game anyway. I'll get back to this after Ubisoft patches it.

OK I tried to play it again, this time I wanted to explore some.

So's I set out on an exotic trip through the jungle in a jeep - well, I've never driven a jeep through a jungle in real life, but goddamnit, it has to be harder than this. One would think that speeding between trees would end up badly for you, but not here - the car sticks to the ground no matter what and if you hit a tree - just repair the cooler. And since it's a major part of the game (driving), this makes it even more boring.

Overall, I wouldn't give this game more than 6 or 7 out of 10. Wasted potential.

ok so i played for another 10 hours. and although the aforementioned ammo situation is no show stopper for me, there are other issues. the most glaring: it's just boring. move from A to B, with some checkpoints on the way. kill anything that moves at B. or go in stealthy (which works incredibly well at times - the silenced makarov is a blast). move to C/return to B. repeat. no problem here, thanks to the dumb A.I..
what strikes me however is how incredibly real and life-like character animations are. one of the NPCs talked to me about something and gave me a thumbs up that looked incredible. plus: the NPCs are much more likeable than in other games. when i had to mercy kill one at some point i felt really bad - plus, the sequence was executed extremely well. apart from that, i really like that singh guy. his accent cracks me up everytime :D

all in all: this could have been much, much more.

It sure looks interesting, and althought my PC has NO chance of running it, I still could buy it on PS3. Do you think it's worth it on a console?

Ok, I think I might rent it if I can some place to rent it from... those stores are pretty rare in Finland.

I've been playing this all week on the pc and it's not the greatest game but it's sure is a load of fun.

I've been after a fps where I could just drive around, jump out shoot some things up, blow up even more shit and then jump back in my car and rinse and repeat. Sure I could do that in Crysis but then I kept running out of road or if I wanted to explore a little niggle would pop into my head 'aren't you supposed to be saving the world right now?'

Sure the game is hit and miss in design, the unlimited copies once you've bought a weapon, the magic storage crates and generic ammo take most of the strategic fun out of the game. Jamming is a non existent problem as long as you don't rely on the dropped guns and remember to exchange your weapons at a safe house or weapon shop. Lack of prone didn't bother me after playing hundreds of hours of Stalker but the lack of leaning is sorely missed. The respawning needs a patch, a delay of a few hours is really needed before checkpoints and other locations respawn, not for making the game easier but to give a sense of accomplishment at clearing an area.

The load outs are a little odd, I thought some weapons could of been in different categories, but then maybe I'm just sore at not being able to take both my favorites at the same time. A silenced Mac-10 if there's any addons for the pc version pretty please. But I think my biggest gripe is the buddies, it would of been so much better to take them missions with me those mounted guns are just crying out for a buddy to operate while I'm driving around.

On the other hand the game is beautiful, the only glitch with the ai I've seen is an enemy shooting at me while looking in another direction the fire fights have been fun, well except for the beginning of the second part. Go out the back he says it's safer, like heck it was. The fire is impressive and vehicles easy to handle for an fps. The damage system really shines though. The damage seems to be location based, unless you hit a vital spot they will keep on going, with a limp or clutching a wound. Some will even play dead. I didn't kill a guy outright and went to pass him only for him to suddenly sit up, draw a pistol and shoot me in the back, brilliant.

Overall there are missed opportunities but they don't detract from the fun. I still don't know why they called it a Far Cry game, unless it's the hangliders? I so disliked the first game that I nearly didn't get this and then I would of missed out on the best new game this year, that I've played that is.

Played through the entire game, basically just because I was avoiding studying and it was the only game I had installed at the time.

Overall, quite a disappointment. The initial outset is interesting, Africa is a nice (and new) setting, fire is lovely, but pretty much useless in actual gameplay. If the main quest(s) weren't as bloody damn repetitive and useless as they are now, had been given some real attention and detail, it would've been a lot better.

One thing that irks me with this game, as with others of the latest gen, is the take on lengthening a game through either 'achievements' or hideous collection crap. Having around 200 diamonds spread throughout the world makes absolutely no sense, collecting them is bloody chore. And that's basically what the entire game soon becomes, a chore, a second job. Like Oblivion. And in FC2 they seemed to think that creating an engine and a world would be enough.

And something else. The only thing adding depth, the Jackal tapes, are actually hidden like the diamonds. Who the fuck thought it'd be a good idea to hide main story elements that actually add the much, very much needed depth in this utterly shallow game? Seriously, one of the worst ideas I've seen since a long time.

All in all, I've still enjoyed myself, even if it was just because the core gameplay is pretty well done. But the execution was just weak. Could've been much better, now it's just a very shallow GTA clone set in Africa.

In a way it's a lot like JA2, not just because of the setting and the mercenary factor but at the heart of it most of JA2 is go to this town kill all the soldiers, train militia, get gold from a mine and buy new gear. Where the fun, the interesting bit comes in is how you go about it and what order you do things. For me it's the same in FC2, the missions might be repetitive in their goals but the real fun is in the excecution of the missions.

In JA2 if you do every town in the same manner then it quickly gets old. In FC2 if you do all the faction missions back to back, using the same tactics then yeah it also gets old fast. But if you mix them up a bit, blow up a convoy for the weapon shop to unlock weapons, do a stealth kill to earn some quick diamonds, help out a buddy and then do a faction mission then it's a lot more interesting. I've had to attack the same area several times for different missions, I've never gone about the attack in the same way or from the same direction twice and the battles have never played out the same.

Quite frankly who cares about the plot, yeah it's shallow but there's so many that games that get bogged down in their own plot that so far this has been quite refreshing.

That's basically what I call the core gameplay, the engine, what it allows you to do. And that's fine, it's fun, well developed. But that ought to basically just be part of the game, not all of the game. Because apart from this core aspect, the game simply doesn't offer enough.

'Mount and Blade' is a good example of such a style. It pretty much has no story and such, but the core aspect, the key gameplay, is just so bloody damn addicting that I could go on for days. Both games in that respect are sortof... arcade style, like a very advanced pinball game. But FC2 came with quite some pretensions, the trailers showed what seemed involving story choices, factions that actually bother trying to be a faction, buddies that matter more. The second part of the game is much better compared to the first in that regard; buddies were introduced in a more...stitched-into the game way, instead of just 'oh look, a house, a buddy'.

But yeah, the core stuff is good, fun enough for me to play through all of it really. I've probably been a bit too harsh in my other post. It's just that I've gotten slightly...sceptical about games lately. I'm more and more finding out that stuff often isn't added because it adds to the fun part of a game but just because it makes a nice bullet point on the box (Radiant AI!) or because it lengthens the game (200 hours of gameplay!).

And I'm really a bit of an Aristotelean in that regard; a game, like a person, ought to aim at fulfilling its essential purpose to the fullest. And it just sometimes feels like developers forgot what a game is supposed to do nowadays.

Edit: Oh and I probably played through it a bit too fast while under time pressure anyway, I remember now. Hectic time for studying, still wanted to play a game. That's never added to the fun part. But in the end I guess, I had quite some fun, but expected more than was delivered. As with a lot of games these days...damnit, I really, really wish I could enjoy games like I did in the olden times. But I guess back then I had seas of time, now I've got seas of research to do.

The only advert I had seen was the tv spot with the great music and a little bit of combat. I guess that's the advantage of not following the development of or reading up on a game, no expectations no major disappointments.

Trouble is it's retards who jump into a game at the hardest difficulty and badmouth it because they can't cope that encourages developers to keep dumbing games down so the game is more accessable to the casual gamer.
