The Vault Dweller

always looking for water.
Anime is to blame for violence and sexual perversion. Seriously here are some quotes:

Otakus are not harmless geeks. Even the Japanese people look down on these losers who are mostly segregated to Akihabara/Akiba, also known as the otaku mecca. A number of otaku in Japan have turned to rape and murder as an outlet for their perversions. Many of these deviants are not able to interact with normal people and often develop obsessive and unnatural desires and interests.

Check your child’s computer for anime and anime terms, TODAY. Your child could become an otaku, a furry and even a murderer if not a sexual deviant. Don’t let it happen to you!

That’s because most Asians do not believe in G-d, but rather in primitive religions such as Buddhism or Shintoism (paganism).

People like this person who are deeply religious, but seem to take offence to anything particularly without doing any or little investigation scare me.

Well at least Wooz will be happy. Oh and for reference I am hardly an anime fan, but I think anyone who knows what it is will find this interesting.

Sincerely,
The Vault Dweller

"Primitive Religions"?

...

No, TVD. If there's one thing I despise more than Anime, it's <s>niggers, kikes, wops, greasers, bohunks, chinks, japs and beaners</s> racist bigots.

Anime, broadly speaking, might force onto you a mold of crappy and tasteless art, but it won't make you a devious, kitten outfit-wearing rapist monster.

Unfortunately religions are bound to be misused to disguise things like prejudices or even open racism. Sad

*Takes off his kitten outfit and puts away his 'love' knife.*

Those crimes mentioned are just Japanese kids venting their frustration at their countrymen being unable to create decent art, or even, for want of a better phrase, art-that-looks-like-real-stuff/people.

Edit: (I refer strictly to the crappiness of Anime, of course, and not to their prodigious cultural achievements)

Yeah, because as everyone knows, extreme realism has always been the sole focus of all forms of art. I don't think even Wooz would point at that as a reason for his dislike of anime.

That is patently ridiculous. In what way is Buddhism or Shintoism "primitive" (because they're not monotheistic? ), and in what way does religion have anything to do with anime, sexual "deviancy," or homicide? Japan's religious leanings are rather complex, with the majority claiming to be non-believers, or at least not actively religious, in most polls.

i think they said something about finding some reference of an anime series called Deathnote near a decayed corpse somewhere in Belgium.

lemme google:
they found two notes with 'Watashi wa Kira desu' near a few bodyparts (white male, but missing pieces, they think it's the same guy but waiting for DNA confirmation). the notes mean "i am Kira, the murderer" or something along those lines. they suspect it's a reference to Death Note (manga/anime/games, whatever), but they don't know if it's actually connected to the bodyparts found or not.

so you see, anime = violence! ban it!

ban computer games while you're at it!

and hollywood movies!

and porn!

and the internet!

and guns!

and steak knives!

and puppies!

I don't know where you plucked "extreme realism" from (your arse possibly), or the fact that I supposedly think this is or should be the sole focus of all art. It is simply my opinion that many Anime artists cripple their own ability to craft a story with mature themes and images by making all of the characters involved in those situations look like fucking children.

Edit: spelling.

Hey, does anyone remember that guy that went to his school and killed 30 people because he wanted to be like Jesus Christ?

I dunno, possibly from the part I quoted where you were talking about anime not looking "real" enough? My apologies if I misinterpreted, although I still don't really think I did.

The style of drawing has little to do with a story's ability to have mature themes. The imagery, sure, but I've watched many animes with "mature" imagery that came through just fine (for example: A Perfect Blue). I'm not sure if it's just the large, expressive eyes, or what, that makes you think anime characters look like children, but I've never gotten that impression. There are animes that purposefully go for a childish look, but those are generally comedies or even specifically aimed at children rather than an older audience. Also, many characters in animes are, in fact, prepubescent or teenagers.

Anyways, I'm not really interested in trying to defend anime. Say whatever you like about it, it's really just a preference. If you don't like it, fine. Doesn't impact my ability to enjoy it. Not to mention, it's getting rather off-topic.

Ban Christianity!

The word 'Anime' is key here, bud. Your earlier post made the rather conjectural and offensive statement that I think "extreme realism has always been the sole focus of all forms of art". If we're talking Anime, then yes, I think it's cartoonish style is absolute shit, but beyond that, you're going to have to wait until I insult something else you like before you can extrapolate on my ignorance.

Meh, I like some Anime. While most of it (in my experience) has poor English voice overs and sometimes stupid dialogue (probably more a result of translation and speaking mannerisms), alot of it I find quite fascinating. With anime, you tend to get alot of stories and plots that you just don't see in Western entertainment, and while you may or may not like it, some of the imagery generated in good anime is quite powerful and/or intriguing. Also, boobs and giant robots.

Of course, alot of anime I've seen has been really crappy, with characters that look younger then they are supposed to be, plot elements that have no redeeming value, or simply crap animation.

I've seen some good anime, though:
-Akira
-Afro Samurai
-Princess Mononoke (as far as I can remember, was a while ago)

Let's blame Bible because it told the story of first murder done by Caine!

Seriously this so call religious folks need to go out and see the world instead of reading tabloid...

I'm sick of anime chicks with huge eyes like they were bombarded by meteors..., thought.

'Course, I'd say the same is true for any medium. There's a lot of crap, a fair number of decent picks, and the few gems here and there. I don't think that's in any way particular to anime, and I won't deny there's plenty of crap anime.

Love Akira and Mononoke is great. If you like Mononoke, be sure and try Howl's Moving Castle (not 100% on that title) and Spirited Away. All done by the same guy, and he's a true artist in every sense of the word. Great animation too, although some of his movies, like Howl's, are a little older and it shows. If you like psychological thrillers, the aforementioned A Perfect Blue is a great flic too. A little weird, but good.

Anime/manga isn't a medium, it's an art style.

True. It's the obnoxious expressions, exaggerations and a 'dumbed down' obvious-gradient-filled approach to lighting.

If we're going to talk about anime art styles, there's a world of differences between, say, Lucky Star and Monster, or Sazae-san and Ghost in the Shell (the TV series don't really count in this respect, but alas). Then there's stuff like Atamayama or Tekkon Kinkreet, which is in a category of its own. It depends on a number of factors like genre, the target demographic, the budget, the character designer's sexual orientation (hyuk hyuk), etc.

Since Japanese animation is literally an industry that pukes out hundreds of titles per year, most of it is bound to have shitty production values. But nobody be dissin the Monsters and the Ghosts in the Shells on my watch.

Hentai /= Anime

Plus they say my child can become a furry...

what the hell is a furry anyway? :O
