Gamespot user soapbox

If IT only were the view, the camera and the setting Beth changed, then maybe about 75%-90% of (the old) Fallout fans would be content. However, with each info drip, it becomes worse and worse, I think. It started with the GI article, saying something about a nuclear catapult, exploding cars, exploding town(s) - and, of course, the :violent: main quest.

Then, we learned about the BoS and the Supermutants being on the East Coast? I mean  But I can live with that, personally, as long as there are ground and reasons for them to be there. Then we learned about the portable nuclear shelter ??? That was  really... eh - something else  And then, in an interview, Pete admitted that the Supermutants were taken over the world, and that the BoS hunts down supermutants and kills them - since they are nasty creatures and should be avoided at all times - whenever one can.

Basically we have a game that is a lot alike to say Gears of War, with some rpg elements thrown in for good measure. And not only that: there will be toilet drinking in the game as well as exploding heads! Or as Todd once said:'Fallout 3 is going to be the most violent game ever'. I would have been fine with this game, if Beth has said: We want to make our own interpretation of the Fallout universe, so we call it: 'Fallout - DC story' or someting like that.
But not now, where my optimism is being shut down almost daily by some news of Fallout 3 - the latest one being that Pete openly admittet that the Supermutants were invading the world. eh - wait --- wasn't that the plot for Oblivion?? or Gothic 3? Asides from the fact that the Supermutants were called Daedra and Orcs respectively...

edit:
I forgot to say that I think it is complete uncool that gamespot lets a user attack a gaming community. I also think that this is a problem that gamespot needs to deal with and not NMA on a larger scale.

More ignorant NMA hating, but not interesting. Drama can be entertaining at times though.

This sort of thing might be helpful by deterring people who might not visit a forum just because of negative stereotypes, rather than reading for themselves whilst looking for Fallout related information. Attracting stupid 'tough guy' types would not be good though, although they are a tiny minority. They can do quite a bit of damage before they inevitably get banned for breaking the rules, continuing the cycle.

It might be interesting if the author came over here to honestly debate, but I doubt he really cares, just as I wouldn't bother talking to him at GS when he is just being silly.

The criticism levelled at NMA is entirely disingenuous, founded as it is on the opinions and actions of a few, cherry-picked for their distasteful nature and relative extremity. Still, there is a grain of truth in many stereotypes: there are some post-ers here who seem determined to quash or convert others who dissent from what they see as the NMA ethos.

Yes, not all opinions are equally valid, but some post-ers here come very close to arguing the line of No True Scotsman...

It is time to accept that, for better or for worse, there are many types and degrees of Fallout fan. Anybody who played the game and enjoyed it is a fan in some sense, but there will be people who've played and replayed the game who will look forward to - and maybe even enjoy - the Bethesda take on Fallout.

Anybody who claims to to speak for everybody is probably overstating their case. Positive generalizations are really no better than negative generalizations, in that they both miss the point. There are a few people here who I would accept as spokespeople for the NMA community, like Kharn for instance, but most of those people are very careful to take pains to point out who they're actually speaking for, and be clear what they're saying about who. Even then, if one of those people decided to set themselves up as arbiter of whether or not one was a true fan, it would still be ridiculous.

I'm still happy to "wait and see" what Bethesda come up with before passing final judgement, because I would rather have real meat to sink my critical teeth into than attach too much significance to the table-scraps of information we've been tossed. I'm happy to voice opinion about what I've seen, and express concerns or points of note, but I'm not going to write the whole thing off until I've seen it. And I have received a certain measure of ridicule for taking that stance, from some contributors.

Still, anyone can call me out for not a true fan if they like, but I
killed The Master last night, and I've just dusted off the second installment for a replay.

I don't remember anybody being insulted because of saying that he will like the game. Some may like it, some may not. I probably won't and I don't understand why shouldn't I be able to write about it. Does it really makes me an "internet tough guy"?

So anyone knows if I have to like everything to be a good guy? (even Lionheart?)

By the way: I'm going to check if my girlfriend know all Fallout dialogs by heart, otherwise i'm gonna theach her a lesson!

Of course there are different kinds of fans. 'Who is a real fan' discussions are pointless and annoying, just stupid semantics. People can quibble about who invests more time and thought on something, but it seems like unproductive flame bait to me.

Waiting to see a product is required to pass final judgement, but one can read between the lines and understand things without them being served up on a platter in their entirety. My critical eye has been given plenty of targets from previews, but hopefully Bethesda will listen to and respond to some of our concerns.

Ridiculing NMA is the new cool Internet thing, huh? Really sad. Reminds me of bible-thumpers attacking evolution, even though they know nothing more than "monkeys be turnin' into people!" (NMA'ers be hatin' n' slappin' their girlfriends!).

I don't really think fallout has fanboys.

It has the opposite, the rigid type who refuse to move on, hahaha.

Yeah, those who want to play games that are so old- I mean, fpp rpg? So old, look at TES: Arena! Let's try something original now, something that people don't do... How about iso tb crpg?

You mean like Todd Howard, who has made FPP games every single time he's been the producer or project leader?

It's sad that Fallout 3 will be a carbon copy of Arena - that game has 13 years. It uses that outdated FPP view and ugly, giant characters.

The ones who held out for one franchise of isometric tactical RPGs in a world of shooters and semi-shooters... damn them luddites.

By the way, looks like Something Awful found the Fallout wiki:

http://fallout.wikia.com/wiki/No_Mutants_Allowed

(I'll edit it out in a while)

No Mutants Allowed is the oldest still functioning Fallout website. It was founded by Miroslav and is currently run by Odin. It can be found at http://www.nma-fallout.com.

The site, named after a bit of graffiti found in Fallout Tactics: Brotherhood of Steel offers many services to the Fallout community. Besides it's venerable forums, it hosts walkthroughs, pictures, and other assorted info for the three main games in the series- Fallout, Fallout 2, Fallout Tactics. The PS2 game Fallout: Brotherhood of Steel is a disowned title in the series by NMA and not only has no similar info pages but is even a forbidden topic.

NMA also hosts modifications for the three main Fallout games, placing a spotlight on an particularly good ones.

A great deal of regulars to the site, including administrators and moderators strongly oppose Bethesda's Fallout 3, claiming that any ideas and innovations Bethesda has or will accomplish for the new entry are butcheries of the Fallout brand as a whole. People who try to point out the merits of the new Fallout 3, including those that outdo the cancelled Van Buren are typically harassed and flamed with little to no assistance from the moderators and administrators.

This perhaps overzealous outcry against Bethesda working on Fallout 3 has caused NMA to come under scrutiny from reputable website SomethingAwful.com.

I suppose the negativity towards Bethesda should be noted in the article, but also should the reasons for the negative stance and blatantly untrue parts will of course be removed.

By the way, could some NMA staffers please try to write a proper article about NMA history, similar to this one:

http://fallout.wikia.com/wiki/Duck_and_Cover

We did have one, but it's gone. When The Vault was still hosted at DAC, we had 2 wikis - one, The Vault, for Fallout lore, and the other, Wikipocalypse, for other post-apoc stuff and community info, so while the article about DAC was first written at The Vault, it was later moved to Wikipocalypse, and an article about NMA was written (I think by Kharn) directly at Wikipocalypse. Unfortunately, Wikipocalypse failed and the data was lost, and while I was able to retrieve an old version of the DAC article from before when it was moved, the NMA one was lost, and I forgot about it until pretty much now, so it needs to be written again (and this time it will last).

Look, I'm a celebrity:

Their ability to take things out of context and present everything as serious statements is great. Obviously no one really slapped their girlfriend over this and it was bashed for being an overly crude joke. Why don't you post that on your site?

Maybe I should get a collection of quotes out of context or from their extreme members then post them all together. Oh wait, I have responsibilities other than writing useless articles.

Edit: Arguments changed into articles
Edit x2: This has no relevance whatsoever, but I was looking through the Fallout3 forums and found what one guy said that made me laugh:
Heh, yeah, I'm kinda hoping Howie will storm the studio and shout, "You know what guys? We've got time and we've got money, so let's milk those voice actors for all they're worth! We're going to be writing one-liners and dialogue for every possible PC scenario, now matter how far-fetched! [censored] space requirements, we'll make it a 10-DVD release if we have to!"

And then he'll do a crotch grab and moonwalk off... or something; I'm not really sure how they roll at Bethesda.

The topic was about if Bethesda will have small details(people remarking about your character's power armor, etc.) in Fallout 3.

The site, named after a bit of graffiti found in Fallout Tactics: Brotherhood of Steel

Is this really the origin of the phrase? It appears in Wasteland as well.

People who try to point out the merits of the new Fallout 3, including those that outdo the cancelled Van Buren

Nice to see that a rough demo of an unfinished game is what sets the bar.

are typically harassed and flamed with little to no assistance from the moderators and administrators.

This is an outright lie. I myself have assisted in harassment and flaming on several occasions.

Arena was made in 1994. Dungeons of Daggorath is a real-time, first person cRPG make in 1982.

Just thought I'd put that out there....

Another great example, thanks! I'll keep this one in mind as well the next time someone insists that real-time combat and the first person perspective are "new technologies."

My ignorance-dar has exploded... I find there is no end in sight for us ignorant, spouse abusing bullies... No end in sight...

What ever happened to understanding one another? What ever happened to asking questions about things you do not understand? Instead, we get saturated with ignorance to the extent you want to poke toothpicks in your eyes, cut off your ears and jump off a very tall building to get away from it all.
