Ah I should've known better.

Literally 1984 bro

Maybe you should read Nineteen Eighty-Four again...

YOU ALL NEED TO GET YOUR JOKE DETECTORS FIXED GOSH DARNIT

You might need to get your joke dispenser fixed. Seriously, don't you notice how many of your "jokes" just don't work? Maybe it's that everyone's just too stupid to understand your fine humour... But maybe your humour just sucks.

Let's talk about other things, like how awesome Persona 5 looks. Or feeling hype for the first time in 3 years, whatever suits you.

The music they used, the general tone, you don't see that in western trailers much, even outside of games. I don't like japanese animation mostly, and certainly not the type Persona uses, style-wise. But the trailer at least is kind of laid back, a little longer, a little more artistic than western trailers. So fucking tired of BRAAAAWM. . LOOKIT DESE GRAFICS. . . .BRAAAAAAAWM. . . MORE OF THE THING WE THINK YOU LOVE. . . .BOOM BOOM GAMEPLAY BOOM BOOM . . BLACK OUT. COMING THIS SUMMER. RUSSIAN ZOMBIE MECHA OPEN WORLD SHOOTER.

I wonder if we have enough people in this forum to make an Animu and Mango thread. I think only two of us are openly weaboos.

Incidentally, the same thought has crossed my mind a few days ago. This is one of the few forums I've visited over the years that has no anime/manga thread, and yet has a solid user frequency and circulation.

I blame Toront for that.

if it's not

1. Ghost in the Shell 1
2. Ghost in the Shell 2: Innocence
3. Anything Ghibli
4. Akira
5. Does avatar/korra count?
6. Ugh Evangelion I guess.

I ain't really interested.

Man, you're really missing a lot. Good news, you're not off to a bad start.

Ghost in the Shell 1 is a masterpiece, I'd say. I'm still looking to see a lot of Ghibli stuff, and I've heard good things about Paprika. I also watched Death Note but don't much care for it. I used to really like Neon Genesis, but I think I hate it now.

Why would anybody ever hate NGE?

Ghost in the Shell is a masterpiece, yes. You should watch other Oshii's works too.

Well I don't think it's bad, I just resent the teen angst in it, and the teen angst in me that made me like it.

Never been a fan of Gainax, alas I never watched NGE so I can't comment anything there.

If you like Fantasy Thrillers you may like Attack on Titan and Full Metal Alchemist.
If you like super manly manly Action you may like Terraformars and Dorohedoro.
If you like non fantasy Thrillers you can't go wrong with Naoki Urasawa's Monster and 20th Century Boys.

I am talking strictly manga here tho. Altho all of them have anime series now, except for 20th Century Boys (That one has a live action movie trilogy with varying degrees of quality) and Dorohedoro (for no reason at all, they need to animate that shit).

I don't adhere to genres of storytelling almost at all, I just want a good story. Something without wacky humor, sexually suggestive art or scenes(although lore-appropriate nudity like in GitS is fine), and at least a little bit of a penchant for realism. I just don't think Anime is the entertainment field where I can find this stuff for the most part.

Dude, all the ones I mentioned are exactly that, the realism bit specially with the Naoki Urasawa works (Not so much with the 2 in the middle, those are my "fun action" reads). Maybe FMA has a problem with the "humor" but all of those I mentioned are as far away from the "Panty shot animu" thing as they can.

Well Full Metal Alchemist is still just a bit too much on the side of wacky humor, with the faces and the "miniskirts!" type jokes. I've been thinking about giving it another watch, some many years ago in my anime-period I watched a certain amount of episodes, but it couldn't keep me going. I also at one point watched the first episode of Cowboy Bepop, and I thought, well, it's ok. But I don't need to see more.

Don't feel as though I am giving anime or manga a hard time, because western animation for me is even worse. I like the Last Airbender, Legend of Korra season 1 and 3, and that's pretty much it. I'm also not looking for comedy shows, and western animation has a pretty big focus on that. When it comes to comics too, I pick out Watchmen, V for Vendetta, Hellboy and BPRD. But then BPRD is already slipping a bit in the quality department for me. Even though it's totally my thing. And then I read Secret Identity or Wanted and I think, well I can't think of big flaws, but it just doesn't draw me in enough for me to get really into the scene. I dunno, I'm just very specific when it comes to everything in movies, comics, series, really all art.

FMA gets very Hellboy-ish as it goes on, I admit the first couple of chapters are kind of boring (I myself gave up on it until a few months ago) but it gets much better. Naoki Urasawa's thrillers are very much serious Thrillers and Attack on Titan is so Miserable the humor it sometimes spices in just serves to drive the point home that the setting is cruel to all it's inhabitants.

Well, I can't connect with that one. I've been way past the angsty phase when I watched NGE.
As for the actual angst in it, sure it's a bit much but
NGE generally gives a good impression of what could happen to a child/teen when they're given a task of basically saving the whole world with the mental strain that comes with it - which was great for me. Many shows which feature kids and young adults fail to approach their characters with more-than-superficial attention given to their age and the problems they may experience (whether they are caused by the events in the show, or angst in general). NGE was meticulous at that, at least until some point when the series got broken in the later episodes, but there are some great moments there too. End of Evangelion wrapped it up in a fine manner, though.
