General Gaming Megathread: What are you playing?

Deus Ex: Human Revolution

It's beyond awesome.

But those boss battles. They should have made an infolink tips or something. But Barret is easy after you throw 3 canisters on him, there is a shotgun and a lot of other stuff in the next room. On hard(Deus Ex) it took me 3 canister throws and 3 shots from machine pistol, I don't count that hard too much. But after 10 fucking quickloads it gets bothersome.

4 canisters. Just enough to kill the guy. It's cheese, but stun-hurl-stun-hurl... takes care of him easily. Just take care to stun outside melee range, stungun's range is just a bit bigger.

But yes, the first boss is also the most annoying one, especially if you haven't been counting on such encounters. Regardless of how beef the boss may be, if two full combat rifle clips to the head don't take care of him, it's BS.

So here's some friendly advice. If you're like me and not enjoying the bosses and just wanna get past them, invest 2pts into Typhoon; basic one stuns bosses and takes them out in 3-4 shots; for one more point, it only takes 2 uses. Basically, if you land one, you auto-win.

I personally found certain non-boss encounters more fun and boss-like; you still have them coming later in the game so I won't spoil too much, but there's certain points that look like the devs decided to make some proper big encounters, with alternative paths and well-designed challenge.

I'm playing through Assassin's Creed 2 right now then Brotherhood after. The story took like 3 hours to get interesting, the controls are better than the first game but still can lose it's fluidity very quickly and annoyingly (many a time have I found my slef on a timed mission trying to scale a wall while running to be flung the opposite direction. But over all its a decent game and the Assassin tomb are fun to navigate and running around the cities taking out guards is just as fun as it was in the first one, though combat is still just countering.

That's what I'm playing right now. I can't say that I'm enjoying the setting as much as the first one but it's still pretty good. The game overall is decent but I'm not really into it either. I find it rather easy to take a break or stop playing willingly.

Despite the lack of any config options and a plethora of bugs, it is actually a pretty good port. I can easily play it on my laptop maxed out and it automatically recognizes and maps my controller. There is also a SHIT load of things to do in the game but most of it doesn't really matter.

Finished Space Marine (good game, too short, multiplayer is surprisingly nice barring a few imbalances, however), inspired me to go back to ye olde Dawn of War. It's surprising to see how Relic is adept at using the 40K setting well, be it on an action game, a small-scale RTS (DOW2) or a larger-scaled one (DOW1).

Also, bit it and bought Dead Space 2. Mechanically, it seems better to the previous one and a better port overall, but any pretense of remotely serious or scary horror is thrown outta the window within the first minute of the game. The instant Necromorph transformations, the overdone gore, the poor pacing, the nonsensical plot (especially the impossibly stupid behavior of 90% of the characters), it all makes for a borderline silly atmoshpere. A few jump scares are all I got out of it, while Amnesia made me fear my own shadow for days.

Finished Space Marine and can't say it's too short. At 3/4 of the campaign the missions get very uninspired and most of the time you just walk through corridors filled with enemies, mostly alone and with no dialogue or interesting story elements whatsoever. Not saying that crushing the enemies of Man with a Daemonhammer and a jetpack isn't awesome, but the atmosphere kind of dies the further you go.

Considering that the devs ran out of interesting ideas for missions when their game is so short, I believe that trying to prolonge it would only mean more less and less creative stuff. Still, game is a fucking A when it comes to having fun slaughtering things.

Hard Reset. Setting & artwork is nice & everything blows up. I suspect it would run really well on lower configs btw.

I do fear it will be too short.

Yup. There is some rumor from developers' Facebook page:
"We were stating several times, that we estimate the game lenght for a casual player between 8-10 hours and for a hardcore gamer that finished all the dooms and quakes for about 7-8"

I'm a fairly seasoned gamer, played on Normal to be able to enjoy the scenery since Wooz had a hand in the design.

Steam lists 4 hours start to end... Died 5 times, of which 2 times from the metro. :P

I'd suggest that everyone who has at least minor experience in shoot 'em ups or FPS games just takes Hard from the getgo.

That's worrying. Did you play the first one? What did you think? How does it compare? I didn't think the first one was scary but I LOVED the tense atmosphere. DS2 has been on my list ever since.

I just got Earthbound on....ugh. An emulator. I feel terrible about it, but I'm enjoying it sooo much. I'm not endorsing emulators whatsoever. But Earthbound is a fantastic game that has enjoyable turn based gameplay and hilarious dialouge. I wish Nintendo would release it on the Wii, because I really don't want to either use an emulator or have to buy an SNES and a copy, because I don't exactly have That kind of money to burn just for one game.

Well, the atmosphere in the first one was more tense, but maybe it's because it was the first game of the series and they at least tried to introduce the threat gradually. In DS2, you have a guy's face basically exploding while he turns into a necromorph in 5 seconds within the first minute of the game, then have to escape an area full of more beasties. No tension, no pacing, no anticipation, just ARRRGH IM IN YOUR FACE!! YOU SCARED NOW??? AAAAAAAARRRRGHHHHHH. Another example; remember, early in DS1, where a Brute stalked you for a good level before finally revealing itself, adding lots of tension? Here the equivalent monster justs bursts out of nowhere, yells at you, and you fight. No build-up, nothing. disappoint. Yahtzee's review of the game is more or less spot-on imo.

Also, Mount and Blade was 75% off on Steam, and I got Warband since it had the most praise, and the series in general had good word of mouth. Didn't play yet, but what do you guys think about it?

PS I know it's graphics aren't cutting edge, but 750 mb for a game seems extremely tiny.

And how big Fallout 1/2 were? It's all about simplicity and ergonomy of the technology they use.

Man, what a bummer. It was actually a pretty freaking decent new title. When I heard it was going to have myltiplayer I got a bad feeling about things already. The sad part is I will probably still play it but only after it the price drops way down.

Dead Space 1 wasn't scary at all. I've said it before and I'll say it again: If you can rape a game into the ground with great shooter skills, IT'S NOT SURVIVAL HORROR.

Dead Space 2 is better than the first in every way. It abandons the fake survival horror gameplay and instead goes with more action, and it works.

Currently working on that Doom WAD Unloved, which is one of the hardest shooting experiences I've ever had.
