General Gaming Megathread: What are you playing?

So, some weeks ago finally got my gamepad, so back to Mugen it is. First of all, 8bitdo M30 is awesome, easiest install I've had for many years (and yes, I did try multiple gamepads for PC before), basically just plug and play (I've Win7). And it's like Sega Genesis gamepad, just wireless (can buy with wire too with little bit more coin).

And Mugen... the everchanging game. I still keep on perfecting it, swapping chars time to time. Currently have Metal Slug and kaiju collections for the swap in lists. Wife seems to have enjoyed the dragon chars, so kaiju it'll be (it's a big collection in Mugen Archive, hundreds of kaiju).

At some point in the future I will probably also have to try a 4 player Mugen (yes, such exist now). But the ones I found don't match well my current roster size (1344 or sth), big cutbacks or adding a lot is hard (takes a ton of time to do nicely). For example, making that 1344 sth roster took a month or so (adding each character AND testing each).

(can buy with wire too with little bit more coin).
Huh?! That's fucked up, what is this some sort of boomer tax? I don't want wireless dammit.

Wild you're playing Mugen. I've never tried it out though I should. I just know the memes about it more than anything. Can you play it offline for like local events just fine? Would be pretty funny.

Could be it's just the difference due to having to use extra material. Wireless have been around for quite some time, no wonder wireless components have dropped in price, compared to wireds.

Yes. I actually don't think there is an on-line Mugen, I've only played offline. When I hosted weekly boardgaming parties I oft used Mugen for warmups (while waiting everyone to arrive) and the afterparty. The best thing about Mugen is that it's both super simple to get into, yet also fun.

Unlike the "true" Mugeneers, I'd say the best is an imbalanced Mugen roster where you simply put the characters that you most enjoy to play with or against. It WILL make some fights very one-sided, BUT it also makes team coop play (or survival mode) more satisfying (since you have to work harder to overcome sudden hard fights).
I also have coop set to full random. Meaning, each fight has completely random opponents, with around 1344 characters it means it's quite impossible to predict whom you'll face.

That all being said the "normal" Mugen is max 2 players. But then there is also Ikemen Go that you theoretically could set up for a bit bugged 3 or 4 player play (I haven't tried that, only read about it).

What else - while Mugen does have huuuuuge amount of characters you can download already, there is also still a lot more that could be made. Many character creators simply borrow the graphics from existing games, which is, I suppose, easier. But some do everything from scratch and that is what allows you to reaaally get anything in Mugen. And that is also something I would encourage - if you are good with graphics and can't find some beloved game/movie/book/etc character for Mugen - make it yourself and share with the rest of us ;)

Some monkeypaw shit. Nightdive should have gotten it.

Playing Age of Mythology Retold. So far, quite nice, good performance, the graphical upgrade is pretty good. They seem to have made some missions harder, just finished a mission that used to be considerably easier to beat in the original, because in the remake version they decided to have the enemy create bigger armies, on top of having it train Colossus (which is one of the strongest myth units in the game) in masse.

Pretty much my main sticking point with this remake is the new voice acting, really not a fan of it. I read that a mod for the original voice acting exists, but apparently it hasn't been updated in months and no longer works. Really wish they just gave the option of choosing which voice acting you wanted, don't know why companies just remove the old one.

It might be a rights issue.

[edit]

Also I'm playing three games right now. Rogue Legacy 2, Killer Frequency and Slime Rancher.

Rogue Legacy 2 is more Rogue Legacy (rogue metroidvania where your character is randomized at the start) and uh... It's a bit excessively difficult when you get to higher tier areas, so there is a lot of grinding for gold to expand your fixed bonuses prior to entering the castle. But yeah otherwise if you like sidescrolling metroidvanias with roguelike randomized rooms and starting characters then give it a whirl.

Killer Frequency is a Radio DJ Simulator about a small town where a serial killer is on the loose and because of who he targeted first you're the only lifeline people have if shit goes awry. Very limited gameplay, mostly just story and a bit of choose your own adventure dialogue options that pop up. Very atmospheric but some of the voice acting is really over the top, I like it but I can see how others might not.

Slime Rancher is uh, grindy. To say the least. I prefer Slime Rancher 1's structure and world over this one as this one feels overdesigned, overcluttered and everywhere just kinda looks the same. It's really hard to navigate and figure out where you're at. Still, it's relatively chill to just manage slimes, for an hour or so then log off. I'm not taking the game super seriously.
