Germans get new screenshots from Fallout 3

They don't look much different than some old Fallout concept art.

While I agree with your point, you chose a bad example to illustrate your thought. Yes, the ghouls look... mostly like what we've seen from the talking heads. Kudos to that.

That said, in the same way they dumbed the supermuties to orclike bodybuilders, and made the BOS into Lawful Good paladins... I doubt whoever's responsible for these choices will keep Mighty Beth's generic-o-matic shrinkrays away from the Ghouls.

While I really like most of the enviroment design and the ghouls(the way they look, not the way they behave...) rest pretty much sucks. Vault 101 and "into the sunset" look really cool. I have a feeling that this game will end up like that: Talk with npcs in cities, then go on mindless slaughter to zones filled with supermutants and ghouls.

Except for the eyes, which is pretty much the most important thing in telling if someone has a soul/personality.

uhhh... ugly screenshots. Looks pretty bad for a next gen DX10 Shooter. Must be xbox screens without the nice effects which are promised.

Why do the ghouls behave like mindless zombies on all screens?

Ghouls seem to be just another type of cannonfodder, like supermutants, zombiefied dogmeats, zombiefied vault dwellers, behemoths and bobble heads. Just shoot everything and you will win the game

Just realized something....

Nevermind why they are in DC or anything..

But I was thinking about why the Super Mutants and Ghouls have been portayed as "monsters" in all the released material.

I know it has been a long long time for most of you, but think back to when you played the fist game. You meet the mutants and ghouls as pretty aggressive enemies. It was a suprise when you realized they weren't just "monsters".

I would theorize that the treatment in all the press and marketing is simply to prevent from spoiling the same kind of suprise in the new game. You want the "first-time" player to have that "aha" moment. It's part of the charm.

Or Bethsoft have decided that console players are far too stupid to handle a supermutant that, omg, might not actually be an enemy! They're big and green and ugly, they must be enemies, right?

Yes, that's possible. And Bethesda's own treatment of Orcs wasn't one of "evil enemies" either.

In which case, hell, we're all in for a nice surprise. That'd be good.

But show me a turd and I won't assume it tastes like cake just for the sake of argument. If it looks like a turd, chances are it is a turd, and you're going to have to convince me it's not a turd, not just go "trust me, it's not a turd, I just want to surprise you!"

Yeah, I bet you want to surprise me.

no really! it's chocolate cake that was sadly deformed in an oven accident! it's delicious and moist!

on topic tho, I think dogmeat might just look funny from the angle they chose in that screenshot.

It might be the same reason that the helmet-wearing mutant in earlier screenshots doesn't look quite so much like "The Shredder" to me now..

I'm willing to wait and see more frontal shots of the dog before I jump to the conclusion that he looks completely retarded.

Is it just me or does dogmeat look a little retarded. The eyes aren't set right in his head so he's got a majorly dopey look!

That's not Dogmeat, it's what molerats in F3 look like.

Let's talk a little about the guy's rifle instead. Hey, SuAside, look - there's a G3 with a bit of FAL over here :]

Some of it looks nice, I could probably ignore the super mutant, but they made the ghoul into a zombie!

They missed the whole point that the Ghouls are still living breathing humans, not undead. Sure they are hideously disfigured, but they are alive, not a frigging zombie.

Its really starting to look like they just used existing models from Oblivion to save time.

*EDIT*
Hmm...Dogmeat really doesnt look hard enough, should be a mean ugly looking bastard if you ask me, sort of dog not one will want to pat cause he will bite there hand off.

doesnt the skin of the zomb... ghouls look wrong too?
I mean... beeing affected by radiation, i'd expect some blisters, rotten flesh instead of just kinda missing skin and some muscles.
Radiation damages your cells and leave you kinda scorched instead of just erm... stripped.
I allways thought the skin and flesh of fallouts ghouls was kinda molten, so the different parts of the body kinda shift into each other, grew together, grew some really odd surface and stuff... like putting a sausage in the microwave for 1 minute.. and then throwing it against the wall ... and maybe leaving it in the sun some time. They should look like really nasty rotten flesh, not just miss parts... looks much to clean and so on

Regardless of any other logical reasoning, the ghouls you see up close in the Fallout's don't have shiny skin, so I'd say, yeah they look pretty wrong.

As for the mutants and ghouls, Bethesda probably just told their artists to make them look cool. Unfortunately, the ghouls ended up looking like the undead while the mutants ended up looking like orcs. I wonder why that could be - *cough*ElderScrolls*cough*

I mean, what the fuck? Was that orc break dancing when his leg was blown off? Bethesda, are we going for gore here or hollywood movie glamor and physics?

Isn't that what a true FPS (like Fallout 3) is all about? Shoot everything and you'll win.

I remember from Gothic1 & Gothic2, it was a real pain in the @$$ trying to go from one camp to another, everything was chasing you and wanted to kill you, I was running away from something most of the time. It was cool to serve them some payback when you had the armor and the big weapon, but those weren't acting like a bunch of zombified critters. It's no fun to me putting the minigun on a barely moving iradiated-feral-zombie. I'd rather throw rocks at them like in Fallout Tactics.

For me the Super Mutants look much worse. And the ghouls from Fallout1, well, many of them were mindless too.
Screenshot from Necropolis:

Of course, if all them end up like zombies from a trash movie, (and I don't have much doubts) that will be very unfortunate, to say the least.
