Gry-Online previews Fallout 3

We're edging on towards the release date.. why isn't the hype machine producing any videos for us to watch?

I think it makes perfect sense to have a built-in flashlight on the arm-mounted Pipboy, from both a retro-futurism style angle and in terms of practicality.
Especially when you live in a world where the most convenient way to get from point A to point B is through the supermutant infested abandoned subway tunnels.

Less opportunity for bad word of mouth to get around.

Well, to be honest and considering that the Pipboy is arm-mounted, the presence of the flashlight doesn't seem that ridiculous at all. It's certainly better than choosing between your gun and your flashlight, something that pissed me off immensely in Doom III.

Imagine this if you will:

A gun... with a flashlight on it.

:o

Wait! there's more..

imagine if one were to have a flashlight mounted on their wrist, where would it be pointed while they were holding a rifle properly in order to fire it.

I for one am thankful for the ability to heal Dogmeat from conversation, after the frustration of trying to run after that damn dog so I can heal all the stupid damage he took walking through goddamn forcefields over and over again. Really love the (spoiler? for a 50-year old movie) On the Beach-style disappointing radio transmissions. Also, someone in the concept art thread mentioned the connection between the shopping cart on the supermutant's back, and the shopping cart in The Road. Maybe they're not so far off. I'll be really happy if you stumble upon an abandoned house with a locked cellar full of starving people being kept for purposes sinister.

Does anyone know why people mysteriously use bottlecaps again?

To be totally accurate, it's not actually a flashlight at all, it's just the brightness on your PipBoy turned up, which I think is pretty novel. As for the flashlight gimmick in Doom 3, I actually kind of enjoyed it for the sake of atmosphere, but I'm understandably in the minority there.

I am perfectly aware of the "gun with a flashlight on it" and "gun in one hand, flashlight in the other hand" concepts. Doom III, however, didn't allow the player to use both items at once. The environments often were overly dark and monsters used to pop-up "unexpectedly" in about 99% of the time (which should explain the use of the quotes in "unexpectedly")... Long story short, switching between a gun and a flashlight every couple of seconds or so was annoying as hell. What I'm saying is that it was a far worse design decision than this one.

EDIT: Oh, thanks for clarifying that, Terebikun, I didn't realize that was its actual purpose. Pretty functional and befitting, I'd say.

I think the overbright mode is supposed to be more akin to the halo of light that you had in 1/2 than an actual flashlight. Or if you want to be a hater, Oblivion's torches.

Because it's the other side of the country?

Currency only has value when backed by a power. In Fallout 1, The Hub backed bottlecaps. In Fallout 2, the NCR, Vault City and New Reno backed actual coins. Apparently on the East Coast, some group decided to back bottlecaps.

Maybe the "radar" is only part of the game mechanics that the author of the preview mistook for a part of the in-universe Pip-Boy.

To me perception and radar would be ones ability to interpret the info on the radar and or differentiate one blip from another.

. . .

Please use your ability and interpret these 3 dots for me please. They are speaking about the range of the radar, not about the blurriness of its screen.
Now, I may be mistaken, but doesn't radar get more blurry at greater ranges? Perhaps the idea is that somebody with higher PE would have a greater chance of distinguishing an "Incredible Hulk" blob from an "Orc" blob, or a "swamp thing" blob from a building/wall/car blob?

I've come to an awful conclusion: Bethsoft is a real-life Sirius Cybernetics Corporation.

Oblivion's and Fallout 3's "...fundamental design flaws are completely hidden by their superficial design flaws..."

Dogmeat is pretty much marketed as "...your plastic [or rather, hairy] pal who's fun to be with."

All the NPCs of Oblivion and Fallout 3 have the equivalent of Genuine People Personalities, meaning they're all annoying and useless.

On the upside, Bethsoft is "...a bunch of mindless jerks who'll be the first up against the wall when the revolution comes."

Didn't they just say they're going to show new video footage to journalists at E3?

No. They said that journalists would get hands on at E3. There will be video footage released to the public.

where does it say that they'll be releasing video to the public?
I haven't seen that.

Ehm, they never said that for as far as I know.

It's called humor and those of us with a sense of it often use it to make points. Bethsoft is a market-driven company that makes substandard products, which reminded me of the Sirius Cybernetics Corporation.

Now here's something to blow your mind: your post about my "unconstructive" post is, itself, unconstructive. Furthermore, your post, unlike my post, isn't even related to the topics of Fallout 3 or Bethsoft.
