I hate to descend into this quagmire but as someone against gun control, I suppose I should explain why.
First off, what works in one place doesn’t necessarily work in another. Example: Chicago is an absolute shithole. It has the strictest gun laws in the US. Violence is daily there. New Hampshire lets you own fucking flamethrowers if you wish. Third safest state in the Union.
Secondly. As @R.Graves said, guns are not like cars. It’s a lot less complicated. And blaming people for not locking their guns away for mass shootings is like blaming God for being born paraplegic. It’s fucking depressing and gets us nowhere because in the end, someone who wants to kill will, be it with a gun or a fucking butter knife. Nothing changes. Refer to Chicago.
Third; generalizing gun owners is like generalizing a race. Some people (like myself) just like guns. Some people (like myself) like to hunt with them. Some people (like myself) think (or rather, know) that owning a gun doesn’t automatically make you a psychotic baby killer... my mental illness does.
Finally, armed civilians stopped 6 mass shooters this year. Maybe not a lot, but fuck, there’s something to be said for the fact that media only covers these fucking heroes minimally. The “but if there were no guns there would be no shootings” argument can be used here, sure. But at the end of the day I see owning weapons as a human right; because when you ban guns, then you gotta ban brass knuckles, and knives, and anything else a retard could kill himself with by playing with it. Weapons are cool, simply put. They’re fun to display and talk about. I don’t think someone who did nothing wrong and won’t do anything wrong should get a permit and be on a watch list because some asshole down the street wants to hurt people. Or to put it another way; should you cut off your dick to keep yourself from raping people? If your response was “I’m not going to rape anyone”, mine is “exactly”.

I don't know about US but there's legislation here banning the possessing of knives in public places. If you're a carpenter fixing a building it might be ok but otherwise no.
And the rest of the world sees yanks as the 'violent race' of people, completely regardless of their skin tone.

My town is really small and dirt poor and there's hardly any violence. We have our drug addicts but there's only been two murders in my 10 or so years living here.

I mean, obviously not all, or even most, poor areas are going to have lots of violence. since most shootings happen in more urban areas(more people, easier to hide, gangs, etc.)
