Hi-Res Patches for Fallout1&2 & the BIS Mapper

they are. by the way, i've just finished getting everything sorted as your patch and Killap's own patch are both installed brilliantly! now according to the current patch version which you've published, what would be the optimal resolution settings as well as any additional settings that might be ideal which i might find in the .ini file?
15.6 in LcD monitor (laptop* this is) and recomended 1366x768

@Anniealbertpage:
Your monitors native res 1366x768 at 32bit colours would be your best bet. You can set this up in game from the main-menu screen under options.
If you find that make things seem to small you can use sfalls screen settings to scale up from a lower res to 1366x768. It may not be worth it though as it will cause some blurring. You can access sfall settings from the same window as the hi-res settings.

For fun you could try out the alternate ammo metre (in the f2_res.ini look for ALTERNATE_AMMO_METRE=0). It changes the look of the ammo metre on the game interface bar.

in terms of the interface bar, i really enjoy the artwork for the leather frame, but for some reason i'm unable to see it now.. all I have is a stretched dialougue box

;if IFACE_BAR_SIDES_ORI=0 - Iface-bar side graphics extend from the Iface-Bar to the Screen edges.
;if IFACE_BAR_SIDES_ORI=1 - Iface-bar side graphics extend from the Screen edges to the Iface-Bar.
IFACE_BAR_SIDES_ORI=0

what does this mean? i don't understand the difference in the two
edit: i'm currently running with 1024x600, as anything higher is much too blurry
edit2: one more thing! ha. is there any way you might have the ammo meter look more native to the original graphic interface? it still seems to stand out a bit, but i really enjoy the feature.

In the ini find "IFACE_BAR_WIDTH=800". Setting this to 640 will return the Interface bar to its original width. There are only to widths with included graphics these are 800 and 640. Any other option will appear a little stretched.

It changes where the interface side bars are cut off. 0 at the screen edges or 1 at the ifacebar edges. I would leave it alone as the two included sidebar options were made for mode 0.

The ammo metre was just done for a bit of fun and because the original always felt underdeveloped to me. I have no plans to do anything else with it but if you have some ideas feel free to fire away.

@Mash
thanks for all of that help, i have one more issue. map(fast travel) is moving very slowly at my current resolution, any sort of suggestion? i don't understand why this is.

World map travel shouldn't really be effected by the hi-res patch. The slowdown is due to an sfall patch (included with the UP). The original speed was system dependant and everyone has different opinion of what the actual speed should be. The settings involved are in the ddraw.ini, look for WorldMapFPSPatch=1 and WorldMapDelay2=66. Do some experimenting or search on the forums here as it has been discussed many times.

Hi everyone and especially Mash,

I recently bought the Fallout Pack on the last Steam sale a couple of days ago. I'm fully aware that this version was kinda borked for newer systems (especially operating systems / I'm using W7U-x64) and did my research to fix those and everything worked well. Then I found out about the Hi-Res patches of yours and was thrilled. Snagged them, installed them, works like a charm. It was ages ago when I last fired up the original Fallout games (my original boxed copies are catching dirt since then on my shelve) and I wasn't even aware of all the neat things the fans have created, and still are creating nowadays. I'd like to thank you guys for your dedication :)

Anyways, after discovering your High-Res patch I thought about to dig a bit deeper into the scene hoping for something to add to that. Obviously I found it. Killaps Restoration Project.
(Made a fresh install of F2 again and installed it. Everything works like a charm).

After some digging in the docs that came with it, I found that your High-Res patch was somewhat included, though modified (?!) since there are some differences between accessing the resolution options. The latest version of RP was released Sep 17, 2010 (2.1.2b) while your High-Res patch v3.0.6 was released just (more or less) recently.

Now to the point of my post. Who would have guessed, it's a question :P

Is there a way to update the High-Res patch that is included in Killap's RP v2.1.2b to your new updated v3.0.6 without breaking the Restoration Project? Or should I just wait for the new version of RP that propably comes out in the next weeks/months?

pretty easy to do:
1. Install the hi-res patch as normal as in the read-me, replacing the old version.
2. From the zip file copy the contents of "Extras\Edge Data Restoration Project 2.1.2b\maps\" to "your fallout2 install folder\data\maps\".
And you should be good to go.
Although if you can hang on a bit longer the next RP is sure to be worth the wait.

Could there be a way to bind a key to zoom in/magnify on parts of the screen? Running F1/2 at 2048x1152 is fantastic but hard on the eyes after a while.

Actually it would be cool if the world map was zoomed in 200% from actual size...8-)

............

Mash is it possible to maximize the map area without having to use the old screen blockers. At the moment the edge numbers are designed for vertical and horizontal co-ordinates. Could diagonal co-ordinates be used, or am I asking the impossible. I might have asked this before, but my memory is so bad I can't remember. :roll:

.........................

Another question if I can :P - can the Interface-Bar be hot keyed, for those people who would like to hide it at will during the game. But if combat is initiated the Interface-Bar should immediately reappear.

Code:
Height of the Viewable Map Area (IFACE_BAR_MODE = 0)
By default the Viewable Map Area will sit above the Interface-Bar. Setting to 1 will lower the bottom of the Viewable Area to the bottom of the screen. Side bar graphics will be disabled in this mode.

if something like this could be done it would be fantastic! more appreciation here

running slow

hey guys, I recently installed the hi-res patch to solve the rainbow problem. Well the 16 bit mode fixes the problem but made the game unplayable.

It slows down everything. The game stuck on the loading screen while the intro movie start and I have to constantly alt-tab my self just to set it back to default as I cannot move the mouse cursor around the menu (well I can, but I'm doing it blind as everything seems to freeze except if I minimize and the back it up again)

So is there any solution to this problem? it went okay with 8 bit mode though, but it still has the rainbows

I hate rainbows (I'm on windows 7 btw)

@monguse:
A zooming function is already on my fantasy list. That's not to say it wont happen, but there are several large technical difficulties to overcome before it can become a reality.

@Pixote:
The trouble with angled blockers is that they restrict movement to a greater degree the higher the resolution.
I've bastardized your pic to illustrate.

As you can see the 640x480 rect can move further into the corner than the 1280x960.The problem can be further exacerbated when you mix in square blockers as well.
Another question if I can Razz - can the Interface-Bar be hot keyed, for those people who would like to hide it at will during the game. But if combat is initiated the Interface-Bar should immediately reappear.
That might be do-able but what about console messages and the notifications(levelup, sneak, addicted etc.)?

@Reaver4567:
A couple of questions,
Is this fallout1 or 2?
Does 32bit colour mode have the same effect?
Do you think the problem may be occurring during the transitional fade effect between screens. Once you do your alt+tab trick does the game work until you change screens again?

it's FO2

Yes, it also happens with 32 bit

About the screen transition, I'm not quite sure. But whenever something moves, everything just freezes. But only the screen, I still can move the cursor around and click everything normally it just that I can't actually see it moves as it just stuck there. (The alt-tab trick will only tell me the recent cursor position but everything still freezes)

I haven't really done anything past the main menu though so I don't know about the game itself

@Reaver4567:
Not really sure what's going on there. There have been a few people with similar issues and it may just be an incompatibility with old direct draw and your video card. Have you tried using the DirectX9 graphics mode in sfall? Not sure what patches if any your using but Sfall is included in both of Killap's Unofficial Patch and Restoration Project.

I tried it and it works! I can play the game properly now. It still crashes if I try to change the resolution but otherwise there's no problem anymore

Thanks!!! :D

PS: is there a way to set the screen resolution from outside the game? Mostly because if the game crashes after the res change I can't seem to launch it and changing the ini doesn't work either. Reinstalling the game in another dir fixes the problem but I'd lost my saves

Yep, your going to run into trouble if you installed fallout2 under Program Files in Win7. Your best bet is to reinstall somewhere else. I install my games under "C:\Games\".
Windows has probably buried your saves in your user folder somewhere, I'm not sure where exactly. Saved games are stored in folders named Slot01, Slot02 etc, so if you do a search for folders named like that you should be able to find them. Back these up and copy them to your new installation folder under data\SAVEGAME and you should be good to go.

I have two stupid questions:

1. How do I force refresh rate, is there anyway? Since RivaTuner got broken with latest Nvidia drivers, I cannot enforce the stable refresh rate for specified resolution and it i s kind of painful to play on 60Hz on my old good CRT.
2. Win64/GTX260/296.10 - what is Sfall? It seems that I can't make hires patched version work on 16/32bit color depth.

All going well there may be an option for this in the next version of the hi-res patch.

Sfall (by Timeslip) is a mod for the fallout2.exe and includes may fixes and enhancements to the original game. The hi-res patches 16/32bit colour modes are disabled if you have sfall's DirextX9 graphics mode enabled as they are incompatible. The DirextX9 modes also increase the colour depth to 32bit.
