Hi-Res Patches for Fallout1&2 & the BIS Mapper

Hey, I'm running fallout 2 1.2 with the latest high resolution patch & killaps restoration project 2.1.2b, and i got a problem. Arroyo and Klamath and encounters work fine, but when I try to enter the Den or Primitive Tribe, the city map is completely dark, and i cant see anything expect me and my npc follower. Running the game on winxp.

Here's the screencap. Of "The Den", that is.

@tissi: When you installed the latest hi-res patch did you also install the RP map edge data?
If not, open the hi-res installation zip file and copy the contents of "Extras\Edge Data Restoration Project 2.1.2b\maps\" to "your fallout2 install folder\data\maps\".

Edit:
Actually the screenshot doesn't really look like a hi-res patch issue to me. To rule the hi-res patch out, you could try disabling it by running the "f2_res_patcher.exe". Then re-enter the Den to see if the problem persists.

Disabled hi-res patch but the problem still persists. Anyway, I re-installed everything and started a new game and all has worked normally this far.

Hey. Thanks for the hi-res patch!!!!

I was having a problem with a big black bar on either side of the screen. But I remember reading about your map-edge stuff. And that sounded like.... Well, the edge o the maps :? :shock: :P

So I put em in my map folder.... And voila!!!!! :clap: :D :mrgreen: It works fine. But while I'm creating my character the screen there is still small. Not a problem though :p

Thanks again!

Hi I'm having problems with instalation. I have a steam 1.02.25 english version and the patcher gives me an error :
"unrecognized data found!
fallout2.exe may not be the correct version.
Patch has NOT been installed.
Instalation terminater."

Don't know what to do the high res patch for F1 worked well. Any advice? Thx in advance :)

@ Lateralus:
The steam fallout2.exe is DRM'd so can't be patched. Your best bet is to download Killap's Unofficial fallout2 Patch(look in the files section) which among bug fixes contains an exe that is compatible. Install it then the hi-res patch and you should be good to go.

Since I don't have the patience to search this entire forum, I'm just going ask: What am I suppose to do to the black screen bug? (Man, I hate being a noob.)

@Mr. 1010101: What black screen bug?
If you mean the problem tissi had with fallout2 several posts back. The hi-res patch seemed not to be at fault and in his case a reinstall fixed things.
There is an unresolved issue some have reported with fallout1, where a black rectangle is obscuring the view. Not sure what the problem is there but I've hopefully inadvertently fixed it in the next release.

When I load the FO2 Mapper, I always get a black screen and can't see anything else. No Hud. No Hex grid. I know it's running, the task manager says nothing is wrong and I can quit it with ESC and then Y just like I'm suppose to, so it's like I'm running it blindfolded. I've reinstalled it several times, making sure the master_dat= and critter_dat= are set up correctly, and I still have this problem. I tried looking up the answer and I came across this discussion, thinking this is a common bug of a sort.

Mash I've had a few users (Fallout 1) getting black screen on boot and issues during the ending slideshow, I assume it's related to

DEATH_SCRN_SIZE=1
END_SLIDE_SIZE=1
HELP_SCRN_SIZE=1
SPLASH_SCRN_SIZE=1

settings but don't have confirmation yet (since I can't reproduce). Have you had any similar reports?

EDIT: I believe this is different than the black box bug we're already aware of, but I'm not 100% on that. I'll try to grill the next person who reports it and see if I can get more info :mrgreen:

Actually, I have been having a problem with the game itself as well. Whenever I load FO2 (either 1.02 or 1.02.25) the game gets stuck on the last frame of the intro video that it was on, regardless if I try to skip the video or not. Atleast I can press ESC to get out of the game afterwards. Is it possible the two problems are related?

@Sduibek:
Hopefully some of those problems will be overcome in the next release as I've made some updates to the graphic output including a Directx9 renderer and a window mode. The next version is still a while away though, probably another month at least.

@Mr. 1010101:
This may be a dumb question but are you actually using the hi-res patches? As you haven't said thus far.
I don't really know what your trouble could be. Do the games work without the hi-res patch installed?

It's happening with and without the patch, which is weird because I never had this problem before on the same computer. I do know it's not a problem with the disk because I can load and run it just fine on my win 7 toshiba (minus the usual color distortion). All I can think of is that I recently got the win xp completely wiped out and reformat so it could be used solely for any of my FO modding projects. Although if anyone knows of any modding tools for FO1 & 2 that can be used on a win 7 (x64) computer, that could be all I need; but that ain't likely.

To clarify what is going on, I start the game (either the 1.02 or the killam patch), it runs through the intro videos, and then this green screen comes up and does nothing. Again, I can use ESC to quit the game, but I'm seeing no menu screen here. Wish I could understand programming better. Took three different classes for it and I still feel like a noob.

@Mr. 1010101:
If it previously worked fine on the same hardware I'd suggest updating/reinstalling Graphics Card & Monitor drivers.
With the hi-res patch installed you could also try setting the resolution manually by adjusting the SCR_WIDTH & SCR_HEIGHT vars in the "f2_res.ini"(m2_res.ini or f1_res.ini for the mapper or fallout1). I'd suggest starting with your windows desktop resolution.

Make sure you have latest DirectX 9.0c installed, if you are running sfall in one of DX9 modes. (Try to set the default 8-bit graphics in ddraw.ini and 16/32-bit colours in f2_res.ini eventually.)

Mash:

Email from one of my users with some details on the black box issue.

i have a problem running fallout 1 if i use the hi res patch. i'm using windows 7 64 bit on an intel i7 quad core.
i have this problem when i use the hi res patch without fixt as well as when i use it with fixt.
my intro does not play no matter what patch/mods i use.

From some other stuff in the email it seems he's tried a truckload of combinations of settings both in f1_res and ddraw, but can't seem to get that black box to go away unless disabling f1_res entirely. I wanted to post this because of the mention of movies not playing at all. It definitely seems to be a trend that users with this issue also have the intro movies and/or splash screen not display at all. From what I've heard they can hear the audio playing but the screen stays black, so they have to hit keys or click to skip the videos and reach the main menu.

Hope that helps.

Why Oh WHY did I have to get interested in a medium that required computers? Now it looks like when I reinstalled XP on the desktop, certain drivers didn't load. It might explain why I can't get sound or why I can't change the resolution or color bit... or maybe it doesn't, I REALLY HAVE NO CLUE!

Sorry, am I raging? Here's some farting noises: THRPRPRPRPRPRPRP...

Just checking in to show some of the stuff I'm working on.

Here's a couple of picks of the new window mode. The window edge can be dragged to reveal more of the map and min/max and close buttons work as expected. The mouse can move outside the window and you hold down a customisable key to scroll. These screens also show off a Fog Of War option I'm working on.

This one shows unexplored regions of a map.

Critters remain invisible unless in line of sight of the PC. (Note bar patrons missing)

The Mapper Mod slowly progressing.

@ Mr. 1010101: Sorry to hear about your computer troubles.

@ Sduibek: I'm still hopeful the next release will sort that problem out, I just have to finish it and get it out the door. If you do come across any new leads though, let me know.

Okay, I tried to load the game on a different XP system and I'm still running into the same problem, so it must be the disk itself. *sigh*

I'm just hesitant about getting a new disk because I'm worried I'll just still run into the same problem again with the luck I'm having. I just wish I had someone I can physically talk to for this...
