Impressions of Honest Hearts

So can those of you who already have Honest Hearts tell me if it's as hard as Dead Money was? I won't be able to download it until tomorrow. :(

There are obviously no more environmental hazards like the radios, speakers and fogs, although there are lots of traps and tripwires in caves. [Edit: no more trial and error, in other words]

The Yao Guai and White Leg tribespeople do pose a threat; provided you're playing on Level 30/35 the White Legs are well armed with 12.7mm subs, Brush Guns, etc. as well as poisoning their melee weapons. A few Cazadores thrown in there too, but overall not as hard as Dead Money.

There's a weight limit before you can go to Zion, but ...

[spoiler:82f58a1b9d]you really only need one good gun to start out because you'll pretty much instantly find yourself with plenty of weapons once it all kicks off[/spoiler:82f58a1b9d]

I have a feeling this won't be very easy for a energy weapon/unarmed character. Is it true you can go back when you're done though? That would make transporting my loot easier if I could make several trips when I'm done.

Also, outside of the quests, finding those messages left on the terminals of that survivor: brilliant.

This was fucking killer.
Best stuff I have read since a while. I was amost craving for more and more of this stuff!

I've not finished it yet but it was confirmed by MCA, and people on the Wiki are saying that after HH vendors in the Mojave will begin to stock the .45 pistol and machine gun so you can probably drop those and just keep the unique ones when going back.

[EDIT:] I reckon you should be fine with EW/Unarmed. Plenty of drained cells and ammo to find and Yao Guai gauntlet. Do you have the Meltdown perk by any chance? That'll make the big battles hilarious.

re: transporting loot, semi-unrelated, but oh boy the amount of bloody trips I made back and forth from the motel room in Novac to the Presidential Suite at the Lucky 38 to move all my stuff.
My companions weren't happy about that.

The quality and simplicity of those journal entries is genius, great mixture of suffering and humanity, and describing the bombs and the after-effects better than any graphics or level builders ever could. I just want to find them all to know the full story. And I wonder who that guy is??

I loved having the lost bighorner following me around. Now I understand why people are always making those companion mods. I need to get New Vegas for pc.

Yeah I have Meltdown and Laser commander. I was just hoping there would be MF Cells around since Energy weapons eat up ammo fast. This is my first Energy weapon build so the power of Meltdown surprised me. I'm scared to use Energy weapons indoors now because it normally cripples me.

Interestingly there's a new perk which makes you do 10% more damage for each crippled limb you have, which in Meltdown's case means the utter chaos you'll cause will be one hell of an exponential domino effect :)

Only reason I've yet to pick Meltdown is because of how double-edged it is and how it effectively turns you into a sniper...which in turn would make you pretty much a beast in Zion, long range meltdown, close range Ballistic Fist (+ Piercing Strike, Ninja, etc).

I've picked up plenty of EW ammo so you should be okay. Otherwise just bring more along and convert, recycle, give your nan a kiss, etc.

Yeah it was exceptional. I think, there are stories of a many guys in there. I have read diaries of a ranger (you find his "gear too") and diaries of a "coward" who travelled to Zion when the bombs fell... Anyhow, interesting question..

Ah I thought they were the journals of just one guy who was typing that stuff over 40 years and setting up his supply caves, going crazy, hating the tribes at first but helping them, etc...

That does make sense too though with it being more than one person. I'll try and piece the whole story together when I find all the notes!

The ranger's gear...[spoiler:e04a2944c0]non-NCR-affiliated desert ranger armour? Awesome. [/spoiler:e04a2944c0]

What I find most annoying so far is that in the intro we see Graham being normal and all with his swat clothes, then we see how Caesar burns him and throws him into the canyon and in the next slide we see Graham with the same clothes, just that he now has bandages over the rest of his body.

Why the hell he doesn't wear legion clothes in the beginning, just like everyone else? And does he have a stash of SLCPD swat clothes or what? I find this highly illogical.

Yea, they should of give him a set of Legate Armor. Maybe even an unique version of it, so you can actualy wear that armor, maybe find it in a pedestal or burned in a pit.

Yeah, seeing him as the legate without some really cool armor was really disappointing.
I also hate talking to him. His constant weapon-checking is distracting :D
Although the animation looks neat.
I'm surprised that the tribals run around so well armed.
All in all, I'm very excited to play some more tomorrow.

His animationloop is extremely annoying. The dialog with him looks worse than with any other ugly npc, only because he loops the animation over and over again and he doesn't even have a mouth animation (because you can't see his mouth).

The NCR ambassador was annoying too with his endless typewriter typing while talking to him, but at least he looked at you and you could see him talking "for real," which made it look less silly.

The writing for Joshua Graham and the Survivalist was really satisfying.

[spoiler:9700f962a9]Graham really exuded pure, fearless charisma from the beginning. The reverence of the Dead Horses to him rubbed off right away. I agree that the final mission was kind of weird, but it was badass running across Zion with Graham, picking people off in an all-out war. Let's see...I felt Daniel was kind of undercharacterized. He needed more backstory for his pacifism. With Graham's charisma, I'm guessing a lot of people are going to just default to defending Zion (it also seems to make more sense offhand). Honestly, Graham was so totally badass that the first time through, I raised no objections to executing Salt upon the Wounds. I stuck with pardoning him as my chosen ending, since for all of Graham's badassery (and the unbelievably coolness of the burning fires within him metaphor), I wanted him to have some peace. Trading with him and having him fix your stuff made him immediately accessible and added to his charisma early on.

I didn't mind the bizarre topography, except when it confused the hell out of companions and made them get lost for 5 minutes at a time. I brought an AM rifle from the Mojave, and had a lot of fun with it sniping from cliffsides. There was also a brilliant moment when dealing with the bridge traps; I perched on a cliffside and rained down Archimedes upon 3 White Legs. The other beasts were decently difficult, though I remember cursing audibly the first time I saw a cazador (like really? these fucking things are here, too?). The spore creatures were kind of a joke, though; the Venus Flytrap things were barely a threat.

The overall ambience was pretty cool; I loved the slot canyons, especially that initial approach to Dead Horses Point. By the time you see the Three Marys, though, the "holy fuck whoa" is kind of worn off. Makes me wish the final battle area would have had some kind of new gimmick. I also couldn't believe that more unique weapons/armor weren't included compared to Dead Money, which seemed to have a few more new weapons. I love the .45 pistol and rifle, though.[/spoiler:9700f962a9]

Ultimately, I feel like I explored 75% of the locations, and hashed out everything in a solid 7 hour session. Dead Money took longer, I think. I'm really excited for Lonesome Road, the way the Divide is being pumped up...

Edit: Here's a nice memento from the journey.

Can't say I was particularly impressed by the DLC. Found it quite dull and uninspired. Joshua Graham was rather a letdown. The followers weren't up to par with Dead Money's, as well.

Either way, has anyone been able to get the achievements unlocked on Steam?

After finishing the entire thing, with all quests done, and wiping out the White Legs, not a single achievement came up for me.

Hello all

I finished Honest Hearts today and in general I was satisfied with the experience.

The end choice experience was impressive for me, there wasn't really any good or bad choice, just a choice that matches your own philosophy.

But yeah, Daniel did come over a bit weak in his argument where as Graham was far more convincing.

I was thinking of bringing up the geography but that is already mentioned here.
Also, I would really have loved to have seen New Canaan but I guess that is out of reach with the map sizes FNV uses.

I agree that the companions were a but of a disappointment, truth be told I would have loved to have had Graham from the start but then we would not be able to trade with him.

Well, it's destroyed anyway. ;)
