Inon Zur Officially Announced as Fallout 3 Composer

The Vault Dweller

always looking for water.
You can read the press release here. Taken from it:

Bethesda Softworks®, a ZeniMax Media company, announced today that Inon Zur has created the original musical score for Bethesda Softworks’ highly anticipated post-apocalyptic video game, Fallout® 3. Zur, an award-winning composer, has created numerous scores for films, television, and new media.

“We’ve wanted to work with Inon for a long time,” said Todd Howard executive producer of Fallout 3. “He brings so much to the table, in terms of his talent, background, and the music that’s influenced him. He’s created a score that has epic sweep; from the lonely ambience of the wasteland to dramatic fights for survival.”

As such, Bethesda has also put up three of the tracks that will be featured in Fallout 3 on their official website, they can be heard here on Bethesda's website.

I would like to point out specifically that Inon Zur considering music in games is responsible for tracks from titles such as Baldur's Gate 2, Everquest 2, most recently Crysis and perhaps most importantly for us, Fallout Tactics. You can visit his website and even hear some of his music there.

I give thanks to the anonymous informant who alerted us to this, and thanks to Autoduel76 for pointing out the music tracks.

Sincerely,
The Vault Dweller

I'm not fond of the new music ( I mean I prefer Mark Morgan's ambiant stuff a LOT ) but I don't hate it either. It could be much, much worse. And I rather like the Megaton one, even though it's a bit too western-ish for my taste. It's different but it's far from being bad in my opinion. It has some personality at least, unlike the very generic Oblivion score !

Also, I guess that everybody is going to hate on us for having said that the music was Call of Duty-esque...Guess it's only during combats

I admit that I expected much worse and much un-Fallouty from Zur than this. Still, these tracks aren't exactly evocative of Fallout.

The main theme has been discussed before, it's fine for what it is I suppose, but more fitting for some darker type of fantasy. It makes me want to go kill orcs. Far from Fallout.

Megaton starts off nice, and I like the bass thing going throughout it. But the rest is a fucking mess, with lots of stuff thrown basically creating a big pile of shit. I actually like this the least, it really got on my nerves (and not in a good way). And that's coming from a lover of ambient stuff.

Into the Wasteland is the best. While I would've liked something more harsh, survivalist and well... slightly hostile, this still seems pretty good for exploring the wasteland. At least they chose a kind of tragic or reflective mood, instead of "dun du du! Let's go find some loot". Not bad, but not brilliant.

Ugh, I hate the Megaton one, I can't point my finger on it but its way off, more something for a shooter

Into the Wastes sounds somewhat Fallout like but it also makes me think of a Starcraft map music.

Inon Zur actually made Fallout Tactics music as well.
I thought it was appropriate for that game, but am not sure it's what you want for a Fallout title RPG.
We didn't want epic but atmospheric music. However the way they did it it was natural they'd order orchestral music rather than Fallouty.

Inon Zur is a very good composer and you cannot say his music is not good, but it's up to the developer to ask something that is what they need for the game.

The main title was always off for the most part. I listen to Megaton and don't like it. Could be quite nice for Western RPG's however.

Into the Wasteland seems much better, closer to what we'd want/expect from Fallout(given Morgan's not doing it), but still not just there.

Lol, and to think Bethesda actually says FoT not to be cannon.

it's not as bad as I've expected, but it's far from Fallout spirit. "Into the Wasteland" is something oriental. "Megaton" doesn't even sound like music. It is a variety of sounds that are not connected with each other. It's not like ambient Mark Morgan created, there every sound felt at it's place. And here... I don't know. It just feels wrong.

I admit it's better than generic Jeremy *yawn* Soule or w/e his name is but it's so, so far from Mark Morgan.

/listens to Vault 13 track

Eh.

The main title feels more like Lord of The Rings chopping off orc heads more than Fallout..

Megaton is decent, but it feels too cowboy-ish.

Into the Wasteland doesn't sound right at all. It sounds like some sort of japanese fantasy game.

I wonder why Beth thinks they're the right men for the job when they can barely put the most obvious things together. :|

Bah. So it's confirmed, they changed even the music. "Into the wasteland" is okay, "Megaton" is appalling, the main theme I won't even comment on. But all of this is quite distinct from F1 & 2.

Didn't we know it was him already?

Some of us knew this for a year now.

Never did reveal it. Purely out of politeness towards BethSoft.

EDIT: Ok, what's with the banjo in Megaton?

I've been rewatching Carnivale, and that sounds like that series' soundtrack. In other words; that has more of a 30's feel than a 50's feel.

Though in all honesty: it could be worst.

Wow, hearing that "Main Title" track takes me right back to the official site countdown to the unveiling of the teaser. I remember reading people's criticisms back then, and some refuting them because noone even knew wether the track would be in the game or not, much less be the main theme. Guess some assumptions are safer to make than others, after all.

The orchestral style does contrast a lot with Fallout's style. You can tell that mr Zur did try and make the song more dark and ominous than your standard fantasy fare, but the main track quickly takes a turn for the "epic". As for "Into the Wasteland", it would be right at home in the Heroes of Might and Magic series, perhaps as some castle's theme. "Megaton" is probably the best among them, it does go a little overboard on the "western" thing but, then again, the town's sheriff is also very stereotypical, so maybe they're going for that feeling.

Into the wasteland is pretty good, it is by far the best of the 3 and it fits fallout for sure. Main theme well we already knew about it, its not great.

Megaton, is ok. It does sound like the music from a scene in Walker Texas ranger a little bit. Well ok, it really sounds like something from Walker Texas ranger. But it is not that bad.

But I will say this, It could have been much worse.

Into the Wasteland: I quite like the eastern elements in that. Gives it an other-worldy vibe which works quite well.

As the for the main and the Megaton themes, Jesus H Wept. I've come up with closer to the mark pissing around in Reason.
