inXile and Unity crowdsourcing Wasteland 2 3D models

Now's your chance Prosper.

I don't see the issue here. It's a smart move. The dev's get a bunch of assets and they can pick the best ones to put in the game, the boys and girls that submit their work get the opportunity to show their competence and if they make it in the game it will be a breaktrough for them. I was sceptical when they said they where using the unity store to to purchase pre made assets but now i think its a great idea as it gives the community a chance to improve the game.

It's a brilliant move and i applaud you.

I see it as Fargo giving something back to the Unity community (because there is one there too!). The Unity asset store has not been the best because while it's used by a lot of indie game creators there's still a lack of quality models. Fargo (which was given full access to Unity for free) is now making sure Unity fans gets a piece of the action as well. I say it's a super nice move. This will truly be a game by <strike>gamers</strike> mutants for <strike>gamers</strike> mutants.

Here's to hoping there will be one famous asset that is used in every game from now on. Be it a rock or hammer (hoping for a certain hammer). A piece of Wasteland.

The Wilhelm scream of computer games.

I think it's a great idea. If there are models that clearly don't fit artistically they don't have to use them.

Another then, they can still modify the assets. Change colors, size, shape, etc.

Of course, they will be picky and only grab the stuff they can use instantly or modify as little as necessary.

Not to mention, you will see the same assets in current games re-used and re-textured, then placed someone else in the game.

This is a great move and I support it.

I think it's a great idea, and I think some around here vastly underestimate the amount of time you can sink in to having people building props for a game of this size.

Does someone really need to read all the design docs, and have a sit down with Fargo and the W2 team to make a "broken table", or "filthy mattress", or "old car rims", etc, etc, etc.? I don't think so.

I'd rather have them spend their serious time and money building the core game, and testing the shit out of it until it's ready. Let someone else make "Cactus #7".

Pros
Saves time
Saves money
Promotes the Unity engine and store
Involves fans in the development process
Gives potential incentives for highly skilled artists
Potential for truly unique models

Cons
Potential for patchwork look/feel
Comes off as being a little lazy
Potential for non-unique/non-specific models

Overall, pros outweigh cons. Conclusion: good idea.

It came with a poem of some sort:

<Men> when the world is on fire
<Men> i will make you smile
<Men> i will stare at violin stars
<Men> till I get the bends
<Men> no planes in the sky
<Men> :(

Seems to me like it can be as much or as little of a ripoff as the artists want.

If your model is good, price it higher, problem solved. It's a marketplace, right? If the marketplace is truly shy of good models, that should drive the price up for *good* art. It's only a ripoff when idiots undervalue their work and ruin the market. (Why am I thinking of the local music scene all of a sudden?)

That turret looks like taken out of some comic game and the skull makes me think of Warhammer 40k, somehow. I don't think it fits well.

Yep...I see a lot of shitty art coming out of this.

Shitty art will be coming out regardless of whether this exists or not.

I can seriously not believe modders of all people are being all butthurt about this? What the actual fuck?

That turret is wrong for exactly the reasons Lexx provided though.

You are right the skull looks very Ork Waaagh style from 40K...which is exactly what it might be.

I clicked the link and on the artists page the 1st label in the right column is "40K" so he may have made this as a 40K model and though he'd had perfect timing creating such a thing right when there is a post-apocalyptic game developer asking for people to model cobbled together looking turrets.

The skull should certainly be removed or changed to a different symbol, but I don't think the design will look all that bad especially when it's shrunk down to 1.5 inches tall on my screen.

Hey guys, do your research, please. This model is made EXACTLY how inXile wanted it:

Furthermore, Wasteland 2 is not a first person game, it's an isometric game. It will have some slightly exaggerated elements, for clarity.

And yet I still think it looks like out of a warhammer comic game.

Sure it looks like an Orkz turret but that's hardly the modeler's fault, he just did what IneXile wanted. That said, I think that the Orkz have a post-apoch look to them so having a faction with a similar style would make sense.

On the comic note, do we know if the game plans on being cell-shaded?
