"Isometric turn-based games cannot have good graphics"

Does anyone else feel that isometric rpgs would be perfect for mobile gaming?
I don't.
I can't imagine how annoying it would be to use limited buttons or a touch screen to fiddle around with a ton of gameplay mechanics. Mobile gaming would work well with old SNES-esque JRPG's like Chrono Trigger though.

That's... Fair. But I still feel it could work with some control tweaks.

So streamlining it for a different device?
Isn't that the reason a lot of IP's turned to shit when they started to focus on console limitations?

Yeah but mechanics might 'have' to be tweaked because of the controls being tweaked.

I don't see why l... Just have all actions that are mapped to keys listed in a pull up menues. A menu for combat actions stealth actions and so on put in the corners... Idk man I don't design games... But I'm sure it could work and not be too cumbersome...

It's not just about whether you can fit in the old mechanics and controls into a mobile game experience, it's also about how well they work when used. And I've played RTS' on mobile game devices and consoles and it just works like shit. I'm far too much of a pessimist to see how it would 'play well' on a mobile gaming device. I mis-click enough on my touch-screen phone as it is and I just don't see how it wouldn't be an extremely frustrating and slow process for a cRPG.

It'd have to be reworked, completely. But at that point the gameplay wouldn't be the same any more and I like cRPG's the way that they are because of the way that they are and how the controls work.

Maybe I'm just biased but mobile games simply feel too limiting to me.

I'd love to see it done as an experiment, to see whether it could work or not. But from my experience with mobile games and strategy games on non-computer's I simply don't see how it could ever work well. It'd be altered so heavily that the magic I love in them would be lost and replaced with some finger-click-friendly control system.

Yuck...

Apparently... Even though pre-rendered Shit often looks far better than anything else from its time...
Certainly. I mean, modern graphics can easily pull off amazing quality in real time, but back then pre-rendered backgrounds were the shit.
Personally, I just love that crisp, highly detailed look of Commandos:

I think Fallout would look amazing in this style.

Wow does that look nice! What engine is that in? IE?

No, don't think so. No idea what the engine is, probably proprietary for the game.

Damn, it's pretty.
But I think it's more down to the style, not the engine. I mean, it's mostly a prerendered background, some background animations like water and pseudo-3D models (maybe voxel-based?).

I happen to really like the prerendered backgrounds, I like the style it has going for it but you're right about the engine still it does look kind of look IE-esque. Do isometric games of today still use prerendered backgrounds?

I think Pillars of Eternity uses pre-rendered backgrounds. Incidentally, POE has exactly this kind of highly detailed crisp look to it, too.
And I guess Tyranny will work in a similar fashion, and if I understood it correctly, Torment: Tides of Numenera will have them, too.
So pre-rendered backgrounds are not dead yet at all. And personally I think it can look absolutely gorgeous as shown by those titles :D
Just look at this...

Wow that looks really stunning, what game is that?

Now I crave a fallout reboot with better graphics (isometric). It would have to be bootleg though considering I don't trust the current IP holders.

Maybe one of these days when my to do list clears out I'll fiddle with it...

There is that whole thing with Inxile trademarking Van Buren, maybe you'll get your isometric Fallout with good graphics.
