Kieron Gillen interviews Pete Hines

By this point, the first newbie has gotten so jaded, so disillusioned with the company, they no longer on reflex believe the company's lies when the PR puppet comes out for a show. They no longer can, after having been defending the company for some time, and been called at every point.

They are no longer so foolish, because by this time they have enough scars from being used by the company PR.
This is almost exactly what happened to me. I was so fed up I was about to abandon gaming all together, until I found this site and others like it, and the absolutely amazing games championed by them. Unfortunately, most of those kinds of games stopped being made some time ago, and it doesn't look like they will be made again anytime soon.

Don't forget to mention how abusive game companies only serve to hasten another video game crash.

Anyone who decides to read up on the game crash of the eighties will learn one thing.

Videogames were the new big thing so everyone figured they could churn out the crap and the kids would buy it. The market ended up getting so polluted that parents and kids, the entire audience jsut got sick and tired of it.

Let us also not forget the lesson of the cement pond of abandoned E.T. games. May that Atari director die in a fire.

The bizarre thing is that E.T. is like the Atari 2600's 5th best selling game of all time with 1.5 million sales.

Just goes to show high sales numbers aren't everything. GTA IV cost 100 million to make. That means it'll have to sell at least 4 million copies just to break even, probably more. (of course it already sold about 6 million via pre-orders, and is bound to break at least 12 million)

Indies still innovate or bring quality. Avernum 5, Geneforge 4 and Eschalon: Book I brought great classic quality last year. For this year, Mount & Blade will present the best third-person real-time sword combat ever made in an RPG, and Broken Hourglass and AoD might well bring great classic quality.

Besides, the pool of great games is deeper than you might think. I'm not nearly done exploring Abandonia yet. Hell, recently got a RoA trilogy set of eBay, time to replay those.

Yeah, i had a great time playing abandonware. Underdogs is the best Abandonware site on the nett now. my personal cassic favorites: X-com, lands of lore, tyrian 2000, comaner keen (i miss you), migth and magic 1-7, heroes of migth and magic and dungon keeper 1. I think i still will be playing this games in the rest of my life. Cant see me playing half assed games from this deacade expt sins of a solar empire (great game buy it today).

why are there no more 2d games, why must every thing be a 3d game nowadays, i bet they coud make picture perfect Moneky island not the 3d crap like MI 4.

Awesome comment about indie games, BN. I'd like to brag on Mount & Blade just a tiny bit. They have a tremendous modding community with some mods in development that are going to make (already do) the original game look bad when they're finished. And it's not just sword combat either. It's got the best real time combat period - achery, polearms, swords, more - from the ground or from horseback that I've ever seen in a game (I'm no expert though, so you'll have to play it yourself). The mods just take it to a whole different level.

Pole-armed mounted combat is a bit too easy. I restarted the game for .950 with a new character and had no problem beating up 12 sea raiders solo from horseback. Then again, I could just turn up the difficulty.

Yeah, Mount & Blade is a good combat simulator, but as a game it is pretty empty. I'm probably doing a preview for GameBanshee soon, and while I consider the mods important, they don't really excuse the game. But hell, even sans mods the game is good enough. But empty.

Looks like I'll have to make another ebay run then. Besides, I still want Planescape: Torment, and thanks to Rosh, Daggerfall as well.

You should check out the Onin no Ran mod that uses the Realistic Combat Module. In the original M&B, combat is pretty easy. RCM makes things a lot more challenging, provided you set the damage to full. It is a bug release right now, with a few patches, but it's one of the most promising mods out there.

The game is pretty empty still, and ONR has a lot of work to be done in that area, but the combat in there fantastic.

I can't mod a game I'm previewing. I'm previewing the game, not its mods.
