Lessons learned from New Reno?

Just remembered a very good lesson I hope they have learned.

NO. MORE. FUCKING. ENCLAVE!!!!

They're dead, gone, pushing up daisies, gone to that great fascist field upstairs or cavern downstairs.

All I will tolerate is some sporadic badly equipped soldiers, pretending at making a go, or ex members who have since then gone their own way.

I would't mind if we saw a Enclave splinter faction with diferent objectives - Instead of trying to kill all the Mutants, their objectives would be just trying to remake the United States. But instead of being elite-tech guys with a army of people wearing APA, toting plasma rifles and fielding a fleet of vertibird, I would like to see a Enclave remant with lower tech, so the APA and the Plasma Rifles would be only used by the Elites, while most troops use the good ol' Combat Armor and assault rifles combo. And the Vertibirds would only be used in rare situations. And instead of trying to kill everyone by force, the splinter group would be more willing to remake America by infiltrating, wheeling, dealing, corrupting, bribing, subverting and couping inside the region's factions, with a touch of brute force when necessary, Illuminati style. So this new faction would be less military and more conspiracional. And this Enclave splinter would't be the primary villains, although they could get some importance. Think a mix of NCR-style propaganda with Illuminati conspiracies, Unity-style covert activity and advanced Enclave tech.

But outside of that, I'm another one in the "NO ENCLAVE MOTHERFUCKERS!!!" camp.

We don't need BOS, although it could make sense if they appeared. The good thing is that if they appeared they would be the real BOS. Josh Sawyer and others know what the BOS is all about.

EDIT: NEVADA RANGERS!!!

I guess the ones who want to see the old hats (me included) again want them to be subtle. Just small outposts or far trading partners of old factions infiltrating/bribing and the other subtle tactics.

Personally I would like to see some far flung tendrils of the old guard. Some of them should not even in the open. Maybe a hidden BoS long range reconnisance outpost. Others could be different: A Trade and Diplomatic öission from fabled city of NCR. Another from the mystical "City" (Aka vault city :P). These would be just small fishes compared to the actual on hand factions like this traders or that crafters or this guild. (Don't mess with miners guild or we will bash your head in!)

Why not just introduce a complete new political organization instead of yet more Enclave?

Background. If some dudes with tech called "The Patriots" appeared and started to try and rebuild America while manipulating things though the shadows, it would make more sense if they were former Enclave personel who got desilusioned with the old Enclave and their crazy designs involving pure humans, vault experiments and genocide. Its better than a new factions appearing out of woodwork.

And if a good faction reputation system is implemented, I can see how a Illuminati-style faction with tentacles inside other factions could be either a great ally or a dangerous enemy:

(at Secret Patriot HQ...)

"Hey, that dude raised some ruckus, killed a lot of our agents and ruined a important plan. AGAIN! We need to take measures!"

"Describe the fellow to all weapon-dealers under our thumb and tell them to JACK THE FUCK UP weapon and ammo prices, specifically for our "friend." Lets see if he can keep killing our troops without ammo!"

Yeah, New Reno is really one of the more elaborate cities of the Fallout. I mean, the scripts of the npcs have a line for each situation, and many of the dialogues are just hilarious.
In my opinion it lacked a little bit of explanation on how the mafia survived the apocalypse, (organised armed group, no prob with violence,) and how the wasteland affected them and their organisation, if they ransom the surrounding farms to feed the town, if they hijack some caravans etc, etc.
The entertainment should have been a little bonus on their paycheck, not their main ressource.
But whatever, we already discussed that somewhere else I think.

Yes, graphically, seeing the same red brick in SF, NR, and Klamath, the same adobe wall in Vault city and NCR, etc, etc... Mmm. Good luck with the graphics of Fallout 3. I hope they will be able to add some new customs graphics...

About the Faction used, I don't have any real preferences, it's not like we have seen too much of the Brotherhood in fallout 2, and we can't consider the Bethesda Brotherhood as a "steel" one, can we?
So some brotherhood encounter here and here, as long as you can't join them (and so they can tell you how the brotherhood of the East is full of traitors...).

Personally I would like to see some far flung tendrils of the old guard. Some of them should not even in the open. Maybe a hidden BoS long range reconnisance outpost. Others could be different: A Trade and Diplomatic öission from fabled city of NCR. Another from the mystical "City" (Aka vault city Razz). These would be just small fishes compared to the actual on hand factions like this traders or that crafters or this guild. (Don't mess with miners guild or we will bash your head in!)

Couldn't agree more.

But what I really want to see is "COMPLEXITY". Or in other word, a true fallout game,

Ugh, I guess I hadn't considered the obvious tie-in from Vegas to New Reno. I really hope Vegas isn't a city full of 30's style gangsters in fedoras.

You pretty much nailed New Reno. Perfect quest design, but the setting did not fit in with Fallout at all. I really hope they don't make Vegas in Reno's image. Things could get even uglier....

HI, long time skulker first time poster.
I think finally my dreams of having at least some measure of reality in fallout universe is died with the news of this project. Anyway if las vegas somehow miraculously survived the war it would be a commercial hub. Since the area around las vegas is not fit for agriculture and full of old military bases a constant trade of food and water for guns and technology would keep the area alive. Of course trade brings with it crime and entertainment of different kinds. Also instead BoS there could be army or national guard remnant groups who would pick up the role of wasteland saviors. By the way can someone explain to me how the hell hoover dam survived the war and passing time?

Well the idea in Van Buren was that Hoover Dam hadn't suffered that much during the War and had attracted a number of settlers because of its remaining structures before the NCR arrived, searching for Pre War power plants and rebuilding railroad networks.

As Hoover Dam has some technology that can match that of the BOS the NCR wanted to establish a settlement here.
They probably convinced the already present settlers to join the NCR in return for food, medicine and protection.

hater: when thinking about PA Hoover dam, forget the current majestic lump of engineering. Think of a sluggish river and a half destroyed nearly filled with sediment pool.

It is just a pathetic little pool of water. Unfortunately for the survivors, it is the only real and reliable source of water in the region.

Also there are a lot of old installations that were built bunker style so while the world just crumbled and rotted away, these still managed to survive.

And now they are home to... Dum de dum...

Or have the PC unleash something horrible by his own actions.

Yeah, I was thinking something similar for near the end of the game, with the player triggering some awful.

Or alternatively, at the beginning of the game with other people affected by this finding out during the game.

Nice going pal!

Ok, but even if the dam or some of the lake survived then the area around the dam would be active not las vegas, without power for the pumps that carry the water to the city las vegas is nothing but desert.

Old aqueducts and water mains (not pipes, the tunnels that you can drive a car through) could still be carrying a small tickle of water to the Vegas city. Just imagine a whole hamlet in the middle of nowhere just because there is a water access joint there.

Some guys/ some automated system fixed/kept it running untill the bad guys or xxx government took over the dam. Now they have control over life and death to everyone.
It doesn't have to be %100 logical. just some acceptable and not too far fetched explanation is all we need to be honest (as this was totally absent in the B.soft product...)

Please, just no more Enclave or Enclave style group.

Rather, bring back some of the groups, factions and tribes of Fallout 1, 2 and Van Buren and some new groups/organizations that have no Pre War connections

The Two Mothers Tribe
Hangdogs/Blackfoot
Scorpion's Bite
The Followers of the Apocalypse
The Gunrunners
Jackals
The Caesar's Legion

I myself have been walking around with this idea for a rivaling wasteland government similar in strength to the NCR but based on communist principles; The System.
Like the NCR they are also out to make other settlements join them, rediscover Pre War technology and science, and basically unite the former US states under their government.

They're the ideological opposites of the NCR, and problem is, they are doing a pretty good job on supporting their population and economy.

I don't want the Brotherhood to be part of the story here.

The brotherhood don't making a MAJOR part of history it is possible, but I don't think we can hope to never see the brotherhood in any other fallout game. Fallout 3 (unfortunately) has happened, and, from Bethesda point of view, the Brotherhood got stronger, and now they even have power enough to have a great command post in the East Coast. If they got to the East Coast, I can't see how they won't be present in Vegas, since Vegas is close to the Boneyard, to Vault City and etc.

Heres hoping for the NCR Rangers. The desert ranger theme made them pretty cool and they would work well as a minor faction with anti slavery quests. They travel a lot as well which would give them a reason to be there.

I wouldn't mind the BoS so much if they were more like the Fallout 1 and 2 types, secretive and isolationist. I agree that the Enclave should have absolutely nothing to do with this game but I think they will probably be shoe horned in as they are teh awsum.

Ceaser's Legion would be just awesome. Weird but still awesome.
