Looking for an RTS...

TheWesDude

Sonny, I Watched the Vault Bein' Built!
i need a new RTS.

not starcraft

but traditional and not some fancypants or newage one. i want a traditional RTS.

any come out in the past year or 2 that are traditional?

i know company of heros 2 came out and i might end up getting it. i prefer futuristic ones and upgrade trees.

or just tier upgrades like supreme commander.

and i like playing like a turtle, and i dont do multiplayer, i only do skirmish vs AI.

Tough order man....

If you want traditional gameplay I guess you will have to play the traditional games from olden times. RTS is nearly as badly fucked as Turnbased games.

Frankly, I would forget ComputerRTS for now and return to TTGames like Battletech, Chess and WH40K but that falls under "multiplayer" I guess:)

Why would you want traditional RTS? The base building model is flawed. Personally I think RTS should head in the direction of company of heroes or Dawn of War II. They add things onto the actual strategy, rather than try to give you more things to build and research and nitpickingly put in a perfect order and perform with arm straining speed.

Well you could try the Earth series, they are pretty traditional and they should be available cheap on GOG now.

Some of the acting will probably be cheesy.

Warhammer 40k dawn of war. The last 2 xpacks are quite awesome. But if you haven't tried it before you might even like the original and the first xpack. Just don't play them after the last 2 or you will be annoyed by certain things!

Sins of a Solar Empire seems like a good pick. It looks like a 4x game but it's really an RTS in space, very large scale, build massive fleets, bombard the snot out of planets. Don't know if you would consider it ''traditional'' however.

Company of Heroes 2 I can definitely recommend, save that turtling is harder than in other Relic games, and the AI is stupid.

Dawn of War series is also good. I'd recommend the Dark Crusade stand-alone pack for DOW1 if you want base-building and the first two DOW2 games if you want something more RPG-ish.

Even Company Of Heroes 1 is awesome. And if he is getting DOW he might aswell get Soulstorm and Dark Crusade. Both have their ups and downs.

1) i have DOW 1 and all expansions. play it sometimes.

dont have 2 i dont believe.

2) is the demo for sins of a solar empire representative of the game overall? i remember trying the demo and not being very impressed.

3) i have company of heroes 1. play it sometimes.

4) i havent checked out any mods for sup com 2. is it as easy to run with mods in 2 as it is for 1? all i really did for 2 was play the campaign and even some multi-player in which if it was team based, my team almost always won, and if it was just FFA or 1v1 i usually lost.

When did you play the demo? Because the Rebellion stand-alone is much better than the original, I'm told. It's pretty much Supreme Commander, with spaceships and more micro required.

Better get those old discs and install them:

Age of Empires 2 and/or 3 (I love 3 w/ Asian expansion)
Age of Mythology w/ Titans expansion
Rise of Nations w/ Patriots expansion
Rise of Legends (didn't play it? you shout, it is not as great as RoN, but gets the job well done)

I know you (we) want something like them, but you (we) won't find it anymore.

There as good RTS (Wargame: European Escalation, CoH, DoW) out there, but they are few and none feel like Ages. You can try Civilization V to have a bit of the old taste, but it is not an RTS (it is turn based strategy, and God Almighty it does take a LOT of time to learn and to play...)

Rise of nations is good but it gets boring really fast.

Oh yes, Earth. Although Earth 2140 is hella old and basically impossible to run on anything but DOSBox (there's a patch, but it destroys the AI). Earth 2150 and 2160 are pretty good, though.
Also, Emperor: Battle for Dune.

GoG released the DOS version of Earth 2140 a few months ago, the a.i isn't broken in it unlike the Windows version they previously hosted.

Total Annihilation. Nuff said. The game is massive and did so many things that were way ahead of it's time. Sadly, it was overshadowed by Starcraft, but I find that TA is a much superior game.

And there is an awesome mod that puts the game in a 3D engine, I can't remember the name of it. I think it's Spring? I believe?

I've only played the first Supcom briefly, and never modded it; but it's relatively simple for Supcom 2. About the same as installing mods on Bethesda games.

You just download the Mod Manager and extract it into a folder, and point it to your Supcom 2 installation. Extract the mods you want into the same folder as the Mod Manager, click Add (in the MM), and add the Mod Support Minimod (this comes with RVE) along with Revamp Expansion Mod. Click the check box next to both, and you're in business. Click Launch to start the game (works with steam and doesn't affect achievements or anything like that).

Definitely this. Best part is if you are losing you can just nuke the world into Armageddon and no one wins

And rise of legends sucked..

what? Why? It certainly worked for some, why would it be "flawed" all out of sudden? Because you don't like it maybe?

I never had a problem with the "base building" in RTS games, those that had it. As long its done well. That would be like saying, that you're happy about third person shooters because first person would be flawed.

its ONE way to do the gameplay. A good thing is diversity in games, at least thats what I believe. And I think the situation of RTS games today, is a VERY bad one, there are barely any good ones released today, and there is little to no experimentation, many of them also really suck as far as the story lines goes.

I really dont have a problem with games doing it like War Craft 3 or Disciples or doing it like Company of Heroes or Men of War. I think Men of war in particular was AWESOME, and it has no base building. But I also LOVE the old command and conquer games with their base building. And its sad to see what EA made with C&C

Stronghold 2 - medieval, no upgrade trees. But pretty damn good if you ask me.
the first game actually is better, it looks better (yeah! really!), it has less bugs and it also has a better story.
