Wit is the last thing I expect to come from Bethesda, I just kinda shut out anything "clever" they do so I don't get violent.

Eh. They were discussed to death before, when they popped up in some magazine.

I don't mind. They're not particularly clever or anything, but the intention is ok-ish. Obviously no one at Bethesda has a talent for writing nursery rhymes, but uhm...ok, so?

so? i don't know. it seems such a horrible misfire on the general state of "Fallout Humor" that i really felt deeply disappointed when i read that charisma fodder. it literally made my stomach sink.

more than pizza the hutt. more than orc-mutants. more than anything i have been worried about thus far, i have been worrying about bethesda tremendously and epically failing on the side of humor and feeling. and there is my proof.

i apologize for missing the update in the past with that image. last night was a first for me. fucking hell.

I agree that the indicators are ugly and vague, I would at least like a tealish outline of the body part in question. Like those really cheesy Sci-Fi movies where they're detailing the weaponry on their cyborg whatsit and all the areas are being lit up and labeled on some corny monitor screen.
Notice that the hydrant is outlined in green and has the words "Fire Hydrant" right next to it.

But notice that everything else isn't. It's damn easy to see the fire hydrant, but not so much limbs obscured by the rest of his body.

I'm a bit confused here...
You are aware that the player is currently targeting the hydrant and that's why it's lit up? Meaning that if he targeted a different bodypart it would light up and get a nametag?
As seen here?

Haha, sorry maybe I'm not being exact enough.

My complaint is that it doesn't label and highlight them beforehand so you can't tell what everything is from a certain angle.

Ah, ok.
Doesn't seem like it would be much of an issue though, except for screenshots.
If everything was named and highlighted it would probably be a bit too cluttered, and when playing you could always just switch targets if you're not sure.

Yeah, that one screenshot should be all the proof anyone needs. Preorder: cancelled.

Incidentally, I think it's cute! It also looks like the style of kiddy book that was written in the 50's and 60's, so I'm not seeing a huge break from Fallout style here.

I... I wanted to say something but I got distracted... You actually pre-ordered this abomination?

sorry for my english

Well, I don't think the option of calling him a sissy-boy with a funny hat and then making him dance a la Goodfellas has been discounted. Usually the not-so-polite conversation branches are early on in the dialogue, not after you've been amiably chatting and working up the nerve to ask them if they'll go to prom/adventure with you.

I think I recall you stating in another thread that you never really played much of Oblivion, but Oblivion also had a compass. It didn't just point North West South East though. It pointed the way toward every quest objective with total precision, and also made sure to show you every ruin, structure, cave, etc. within a few hundred yards (thus sort of sort of crappifying the whole exploration aspect of the game, which was one of the enjoyable aspects (if you're an exploration whore like myself) of Morrowind).

Yeah, I've played all of maybe 15 minutes of Oblivion, and watched someone play for a little more, and don't recall anything about a compass. But fair enough, if it functions like that it would be super lame.

Maybe he's a big bobblehead afficionado. Or maybe it was sarcasm. Or maybe, and I secretly hope it's this, it was a little of A and a little of B. I for one will be preordering the damn Polish version if it comes with a Vault 101 water flask.

Not Vault 13, Vault 101.

I don't see anything wrong with the kiddie book either, its tolerable. Though I'd prefer the normal character creation screen, because it gives a better overview of things. Makes one speculate as to why Beth chose to do it differently: are they afraid their target audience would be overwhelmed by the amount of numbers and buttons on screen? Attention deficit disorder?

You're forgetting something..

Games don't come with real manuals anymore, and they know for a fact that their target audience wasn't around for the games that did.

It's not the overwhelming amount of stats thats a problem here, it's conveying their purpose to people who are incapable of defining charisma and perception for themselves.

gimmicky character creation is just another way for them to tack another hour onto the projected gameplay hours number that their PR dept spits out to make the game seem EPIC.

i don't care a goddamn about it being a childrens book, or why it is the way it is. i thought it was nauseatingly cute and juvenile. i thought it missed the mark for "fallout humor" by lifetimes of ill-conceived ideas.

as i sat here and read that "charisma" rhyme i wanted to slit my wrists with my own mind.

My jewel case Fallout 1&2 package didn't come with a manual. Constrast that with GTAIV, which came with not only a manual, but also a big-assed fold-out map. Did someone tell Rockstar that I had a beard or something?

Jesus fuck that's some classic elitism. Also, knowing the Webster definitions of charisma and perception won't give you any specific insight into their mechanics in SPECIAL.

Really? I've heard rumblings that it will be skippable, though I do think it's neat that they're attmpting to tie it into the game's narrative.

Since you're throwing sneer quotes around fallout humor maybe now would be a good time to ask you what exactly you consider to be appropriate humor for the series? Because for me, the juxtaposition of naive 50's style pre-nuke innocence with the harsh realities of wasteland life were a big part of it. And when you consider that life in one of Fallout's vaults is basically frozen in that mindset until the big door finally rolls open the first time, I see no reason why this book gag doesn't fit.

Might I recommend something a little more... sharp?

Overreacting much?

I think the book is fine, and a decent way of introducing players to the general tone of the game world, even if the sense of irony ('local cult sign' i'm also looking in your direction) isn't entirely up to scratch.

Still, like Bodybag said, the juxtaposition between 50's innocence and naivety and the horrors of the outside world works fine.

I think the Behemoth looks cool in this screenshot; the hunched, elongated neck and large misshapen hands give the impression of gross deformity, while the creature's bared teeth and fodder-trolley betray his monstrous appetites.

Like BN said: with a suitable back-story and not a bit-part as an end of level boss, I think he would make a worthy addition to the canon.

wait a minute. you condescend to me, yet take time out of your day to actually respond to my posts? seems a bit counterproductive if you really think my mind dull. anyhow, i never once deemed anything sickeningly cute or cheese-dick in the originals, nor even in tactics. yet here...as expected, is a generic misfire on the side of funny from the dungeon-geeks at bethesda. an attempt at being kitschy and funny in the style of the men before them, that fails in my mind...on an epic scale. i found the originals to pander to the naivete of 50's americana while keeping the humor adult. this children's book idea is a giant gaping metaphor for the raping of this title that bethesda has done such a terrific job of thus far. if you don't agree with me, walk by. it's just a goddamn opinion, friendo.

and @crowfoot: of course i'm overreacting, that's what i do.

Jeez, I'll use a bigger smiley next time you set yourself up for such an obvious zinger.

Sometimes people are curious about things.

Sass me again and Gabriel's trumpet will produce you from the ass of a pig. 8-)

Lets assume you are correct, that this is what Fallout humor is all about. Even if the kid book qualifies, I don't think it's very funny. It's weak, as insignificant as it is it is really lame, and you don't have to be able to think of something better to know if it is crap. You either think it fits or you don't, and liking it can go a long way one way or another.
