Morrowind thread!

God of Blood and War
Yes! I'm considering making a fresh install of Morrowind and its expansions again after a long, long time and I'd like to try out some solid, story-driven RPG-friendly mods for it.

Of course I'll also use the whole MGE thing for better graphics, some optical mods, a whole lot of texture packs to make it more purdy but that's not what I'm interested in here.

I'll defenitely try out some sort of House Dagoth expansion, 'cause House Dagoth is undeniably cool, but other than that, I don't really know what to pick.

Also, if anyone's interested in a nice, little questing mod for Morrowind, try the Five Toes Guild mod! Easily my favourite little addon for the game. :)

Yeah, I loved Greater Dwemer Ruins. The Dwemer Ruins were my favourite type of dungeon anyway, and the whole mystery as to who they were, where they came from and why they disappeared was a nice touch. Frickin' loved the Dwemer. Are there any good story driven mods on that subject? I'm not totally opposed to breaking TES lore on this matter, as the lore intentionally keeps it a mystery.

Just made a subfolder in my downloads to put recommendations in. :D

For the moment I'm going to skip using OpenMW, as some of the mods I'll be using will be dependent on the Morrowind Script Extender that comes with MGE. From what I understand from the FAQ, OpenMW, so far does not support these features. Also, it's still in early development (or at least far from version 1.0) and not fully optimised. I like what they're doing, but I'm going to wait this one out.

I'll just go with the latest stable build of MGE.

Thanks a lot! Gonna use all these mods (unless there are some compatability issues between mods, of course).

Also, for anyone looking for a nice RPG experience, the Less Generic NPC's Project is pretty nice. Makes the vanilla towns come to life. :)

Loved Morrowind... huge fan. I would highly recommend installing the Morrowind Overhaul project though... skip all that other stuff. This is a huge overhaul add-on that used to be impossible to install but now the process is all automated/point-click... loved replaying the game with this installed, really breathed some new life into it:

YES! Thank you! I was preparing mentally for downloading a bazillion graphical tweaks, texture packs, grass mods and the like, but this is just one handy package. Definitely going to use this.

From what I understand it's only graphics and sound that have been overhauled?

Edit: yes, been looking on the wiki for a bit, answered my own question.

Made a fresh install, downloaded the mods I wanted and didn't take too many like I usually do, now installing MGSO, gonna play me some Morrowind pretty soooooon.

Morrowind looks great with the overhaul... find it runs a bit sluggish on my machine but that's probably the several gigs of add-ons and trying to make a 15 year old engine run at an absurd level.

Haha, yes, in the past MGE and all the graphical tweaks and shit made my installation of MW run at terrible speeds. Now I only have ±20 mods installed, toned down the distant land textures a bit and reduced the draw distance a lot. Gonna see which shaders prettify my game the most now. It runs pretty smooth. :)

The only thing I wish they could add support for is an xbox controller because I have my computer set up in my living room and I'd rather lounge on the couch to play it but yeah... damn, I kind of want to play Morrowind again now.

Morrowind does feel a lot smaller when draw distance is increased. I was always under the impression that the map really was bigger than Skyrim or Oblivion, but I just found out that it is in fact smaller than both. The sluggish movement speed in Morrowind was always annoying, but I didn't think that it, along with the limited field of vision, impacted my view of the map's size so severely.

Morrowind is fantastic, yet I haven't played it for ages due to very limited C&C. There's just so little meaningful choices in most areas, which is sad to say the least. Still great game. Might get a few mods to remedy that.

always thought that game was pretty sht and boring, think i quit like 3 hours in and never went back

Morrowind will for always remain one of my favorite games, simply because of the visual design, the music and the freedom. I never actually finished it even though I've played it a lot. I've been thinking of playing it with the overhaul mod for many years, but I always push it up until I have time to really sink into it. Which I never have, it seems...

It's disgraceful how a studio can go from such an amazing game to what we have now.

I wonder what Bethesda did with whoever wrote Morrowind ingame books.

Imagine that/those person/s writing quests and story for the latest Bethesda "RPGs".

Yes, I've only set the draw distance for distand lands on 9, so I can't oversee the whole isle. And I like the slow movement speed, makes my character feel more human.

Yes, I've always had a weak spot for Morrowind. The Ashlands, the Telvanni towers, the Ascadian isles with its huge mushrooms, everything is so unique in the way it looks. It's wonderful. It's sad they went from a unique and interesting land like Morrowind to various shades of normal looking foliage in Oblivion and Skyrim. Morrowind feels like a fantasy land, Oblivion and Skyrim just feel like some medieval game.

Netches are probably my favourite type of animal in Morrowind.

This some troll shit? Or are you gonna elaborate? Also, how could you only spend three hours in a game and then decide it's crap? I'd recommend trying again with the MGSO 3.0 pack and the 12 questmods mentioned in that youtube mod showcase. It's really quite a wonderful experience.

A lot of the books came directly from Daggerfall, although I'm not sure how many were written for Morrowind directly. But storywise Morrowind was superior to both Oblivion and Skyrim. My guess is they fired the writers as soon as Morrowind was out. Also, the switch from text-based dialogue to spoken dialogue in Oblivion and Skyrim only meant more limitations as you can't really write in-depth dialogue if it's all gonna be short spoken snippets.

This thread is important. I´m personally gonna wait untill Tamriel Rebuilt is entirely finished (20-30 years from now?) and then do a massive, thorough playthrough

I've never bothered that much with the whole Tamriel rebuilt thing. Is it any good? From what I gathered it's mainly just a lot of land, and not that much substance. Is this correct? It's too late to start now because some mods already have conflicting landmasses, but I'm just curious.
