New Vegas = Van Burren resurrected?

Mistrz

Still Mildly Glowing
Fallout: New Vegas is being made by group of people that have been working on VB project, do you think that it is possible that this game would be resurrection of the former? I hope so. Area of action is more or less accurate. What do you think?

They've already said that it's not a direct sequel, and that it's using Beth's engine. Don't get me wrong, I really wish it is Van Buren, but the odds are against it.

It's not Van Buren, that's certain. Van Buren didn't even include Vegas, let alone be centered around it.

It's quite likely to use some of the lore established for Van Buren, though.

It wouldn't suprise me to see some of the VB stuff in the game as they did a very detailed work on the region's real locations ant tailored the VB to it but as the VB documents are in the open, don't hold your breath to see a direct copy pasta of them. Folks at Obsidian do have that much self respect to create new things.

Well, given that even Bethesda has used some of the Van Buren stuff in FO3 and its DLC already, I don't see why Sawyer wouldn't reference some of it in New Vegas as well.

It's a simple probabilistic assumption.

Guy who worked on VB works on NV.
Coming up with lore takes effort.
Reduced effort is preferable.
VB already has lore.
NV needs lore.
Ergo they're likely to recycle ideas from VB for NV.

The reason this didn't work for F3 is that Beth didn't have anyone involved in VB in their project lead and thus it would have required them to actually get into someone else's ideas and base their work on that (and every modder knows how difficult it is to expand lore credibly). So instead they decided to do what they do. Obviously not acquiring a franchise in the first place would have been the easiest choice (unless lore-rape IS an option), but that was most likely an economical decision, not a conceptual one.

I don't see why they wouldn't != it's quite likely to

Plus they might not want some of the cool ideas they had for VB to go to waste.

And even Bethesda did use some of the Van Buren ideas. E.g. they not only took the Hei Gui stealth armor from Van Buren, but also referenced the Chinese sabotage of Hoover Dam, which was only mentioned in Van Buren's Hoover Dam design doc.

Well, them being likely to use it is just my opinion. You're free to disagree.

Also orbital bomb facility smells very VB like to me. Not to mention that lots of their ideas are taken from FT (community worshiping a nuke, overall shape of their enclave PA) and even F:bos (Vault with FEV, tesla PA).[/quote]

I hope they dont canibalize Van Burren too much, shoehorning ideas can sometimes mess things up and it is good to leave those things to be revisited with full attention.

If anything, I think they'll just reference the Van Buren background, some of its factions, etc. Not the actual plot.

Whats the prior experience of this developer?

Obsidian has released Knights of the Old Republic 2, Neverwinter Nights 2, NWN2: Mask of the Betrayer and NWN2: Storm of Zehir. They'll release Alpha Protocol fairly soon.

The devs who work in the studio are a mix of noobs who worked on those titles and veterans from Black Isle Studios.

I really got my hopes on. I don't expect a VB but at least a better game than Beth's PoS 2. And that shouldn't be too hard to accomplish. I just hope Bethesda keep their filthy hands of the development, and let Obisidian do their job.
