This has been a banner year for amusing offseasons.

ohhh man its almost time! I've purchased beers in advance for Sunday! ...Yes, I drink at 10am when there is football on... And at 10pm... but there is no football then so I tend to leave drunken facebook video's on friends profiles.

Am I the only one who doesn't see the upside to Jason Campbell?

If you want to replace him with a 30-something journeyman, then yes, I don't think a lot of people would see that as a sensible move.

Campbell has been through, what, 4 offensive systems in 3 years? I'd love to see what the kid can do but those kind of circumstances aren't exactly ideal.
Like I said, where's his upside? That there are more NFL teams than quality starting QBs just mitigates his mediocrity.

Anyway,
There's going to be some heavyweight regular season battles this year. Not the least of which are those between the AFCs reigning triumvirate of NE/Indy/SD. The world is dead to me during those three games.

I wonder, Twinks. It might well be that the NFC wins another Superbowl, but it looks to me like the AFC still has the stronger "winningest" franchises. After all, the NFC has one team with serious Superbowl chances (the Cowboys), whereas the AFC has the Pats, Colts, Jags and Chargers. On the outside you could add the Pack to the NFC and Steelers to AFC, the balance is still to the AFC.

I dunno, maybe the balance is shifting after years of boring AFC-superiority (returning to boring NFC-superiority wouldn't be fun either), but for that to happen quite a few NFC franchises need to show more long-term health.

What do you mean, upside? The 'Skins have little chance of making any noise this year, whether you start Campbell or Collins. Last year was just a freak emotional incident, the 'Skins aren't currently really strong enough to do anything.

That means that testing Campbell on a new offensive system rather than abandoning him makes sense. He's not a proven flop yet, he's no Grossman, we simply don't know yet if he can excel when getting into the groove of an offensive system that fits his skillset because that situation has never happened.

A bit unfair to dump on him, then.

ahhhh, shaddup with your stupid AFC. they're on the decline. the NFC is rising!!!
I only have allegiance to good football - there's no two teams I hate more than Indy and the Bolts. But those two and NE have competed against each other for the AFC championship for that past 6 years. And the third team usually got eliminated by another leading up to it. That's some bad fucking blood between the 3 most dangerous football teams my friend. And that leads to great football.

If this were 20 years ago I'd be saying the same thing about watching the 'Skins/Niners/Giants beat the shit out of each other. I hated Joe Montana. I hated LT. I hated the Hogs. But the NFC championship game back then was essentially the Superbowl, it was the best football you were gonna watch.

Things are cyclical in the NFL for sure, and with parity, salary cap etc. I wouldn't expect any conference to be dominant for any particular reaosn, it's just coincidence that the AFC has the three best teams right now (and even that remains to be seen).

What do you mean, upside?
Best case scenario what does Jason Campbell give you?
Collins inherited a 5-7 team from Campbell, depleted by injuries, and all shook up from Taylor's murder and he took them to the playoffs on a 5 game win streak. How do you sit him over Campbell who has accomplished what?
Redskins' ownership can take some of the heat, and I doubt the introduction of Jim Zorn and the West Coast Offense are going to alleviate things. But Campbell is what he is.

I'm not sure the Chargers/Pats/Colts are that dominant compared to the Cowboys. We'll have to wait to kickoff to see, tho', not to mentions the Bwoys might collapse again in the post-season.

I do hope you're not serious. Last year was a kind of freak occurrence with things clicking at the right time. It had very little to do with Collins taking over for Campbell, and I'd give both QBs zero chance to make it to the playoffs. That means the 36-year-old Collins is an automatic sit to Jason Campbell. That's sound football logic, you don't play the near-retirement QB over the young bloods unless they can give you access to the playoffs (like Warner over Leinart for the Retardinals)

But Campbell is what he is.

'Skins don't have anything better. Tough shit. Ride the kid, hope he works out.

hehehe. well, i was really just talking shit since i could give two shits about most of the AFC. i just grew up that way. though to be honest, the NFC does appear to have the bulk of "up and coming" teams that have been working fairly seriously on rebuilds for the past year or two. we'll see. i'd say over half the NFC are going to make strong showings this year. there was a ton of promise late last year.

I don't want to put too fine a point on it. Suffice to say the NFL has expanded well beyond the threshold of the pool of competant QBs. If I were the NFL I'd be spiking the drinking water in Western Pennsylvania with fertility drugs.

edit:

Well sure the AFC of yore was all about the deep ball and absentee defense while the NFC was all smashmouth defense and power running. But we're 40 years after the merger here, the two conferences are wholeheartedly incestuous, so no one conference has a strategic advantage anymore.

Good riddance to him and his gimpy shoulder (watch him tear it up this year and prove me wrong).

I'd love to see him get traded to a team where #85 is retired/already in use.

I see a foray into a pro-wrestling when his NFL career is over. :P

I actually think it's a shame you traded him. T.O., Ocho Cinco and Shockey? I felt very tempted to rename your team into "Flaky Players Anonymous"

guys. here it is. the first sunday of football season!!!

i shall be out all day basking in the glorious-ness of alcohol and shouting!!!

We should create a side pool on which one breaks down in an embarassing, cringe-worthy puddle of hysterical tears first.

That was one of the sweetest playaction fakes I've ever seen.

Brady, well, he walked off, and really even if he was in a coma they're still winning the division, as long as he's healthy for the playoffs...
