Hello again,
I have another idea for fixing the Fallout Tactics CD3 file corruption, it would allow anyone to fully repair the files using a PAR2 recovery method.
I borrowed my friends CD3 which does not have any corruption. I was able to finish the game without incident using his files, so for this purpose they are "known good" files. Unfortunately, I didn't use the files from my previous fix for the rest of the game, but I think they should still work. For reference, the damaged files on my cd are:
"loc-mis_D.bos"
"loc-mis_E.bos"
"spr-character_E.bos"
I used the uncorrupted files from my friends CD3 and created a PAR2 recovery volume (you can read all about PAR2 at
http://www.par2.net/) using QuickPAR (
http://www.quickpar.org.uk/). The recovery volume can be used to fix up to a certain amount of corruption in the above three files.
The tricky part was try to get the damaged files off the CD. Normal copying methods don't work. Instead I had to rip the CD to an image file and then use WinImage (
http://www.winimage.com/) to extract the damaged files.
Finally, I used QuickPAR to repair the files. Everything went smoothly and the files were fully repaired.
There a lots of bonuses to using this method.
First, it allows complete recovery of the damaged files, unlike my previous fix, which really only smoothed over the errors.
Secondly, the size of the PAR2 recovery volumes is much smaller then the files themselves. At a minimum, they are 1.8 MB, more redundancy would increase this, but one could probably get away with about 2.5 MB, which is significantly smaller then the 60.3 MB of the damaged files (in my case).
Finally, there is no transferring of any copyrighted material. PAR2 files don't contain any actual data, they only act like a giant CRC file. I understand there is some uncertainty about hosting copyrighted files, even if only as a means of fixing problems, so I would leave the final decision up to a moderator before proceeding.
Summarized, someone could repair the files as follows:
1. Download the PAR2 recovery volumes (~2.5 MB) and QuickPAR or some other PAR2 capable program
2. Rip their damaged CD3 to an image file
3. Use WinImage or a similar program to extract the damaged files
4. Place the damaged files together with the PAR2 files and then run the recovery operation; the damaged files should be repaired
5. Copy the repaired files to the "core" subdirectory of the Fallout Tactics folder.
6. Profit !!! (aka. play as usual)
If someone wants to attempt this method, or has some other insight, please let me know. I have no hosting space of my own at the moment so I am unable to offer the PAR2 files for now. However, I'll wait for a decision from the moderators before proceeding.
