Oblivion's (lack of) AI

i do have to admit that sometimes i wish i was as shortsighted, ignorant & easily amused by SHINY (TM) as those guys. ignorance and denial must be bliss...

but then again, if that would be so, i wouldnt be myself, which beats the purpose.

at the moment, i've resigned myself to hoping that there is hope for the game industry. hope² is weak, but it's all i have.

i've spent the last 2 weeks trying to talk some sense into people on the forum (but mostly on IRC) of a recently released spacesim, but for every person i find that agrees with me or that i can convince, there seems to be an endless horde whose arguments amount to "zomg! look at teh shiny! lasers! pew pew pew!". the even greater shock came when "pc gamers" that already own the game on pc came to ask when the console release was, because it would be "so much easier and more fun to play on the consoles". the final disgrace were a bunch of nitwits, coming to plead for the ship to be buffed, because "it's one of a kind, it should be more powerful" while the fighterclass ship is already vastly imbalanced and can easily outgun a cruiser. they claimed not to want to imbalance the game, but they wanted it to be uberpowerful anyway. "i should be able to kill the pirates with a single shot". but no imbalance at all? o rly? *sigh* i can't take this anymore...

In Morrowind for example, you could kill a key quest character 2 hours in and 80 hours later you realize the main quest is impossible to complete.

actually, morrowind had several backdoor ways to compelte the main quest if you fucked it up. those could be fucked up too, but they were really hard to screw over. i mean you LITERALLY had to kill like one of 3 very hard to reach people in the game. infact, you can circumvent the main story completely andbeat the game without doing almost ANY ofthe main quest. youd have to spend a whole lot of time levelling though, and that wouldnt be any fun.

on that subject, morrowind was great in the fact that is had so much to do.
but every quest you got seemed so boring. sure, the game itself isnt linear, but all of the quests themselves were pretty damned linear.

you mean like real life?

Holy shit I just wrote a longass reply and it didn't post! Basically, got the game a week ago and yea the AI sucks.

And why did you bother to get the game if this thread explains the game's lack of AI.

Oh well, live and learn

Because I got an Xbox 360 (and now I'm wondering why the hell) and I needed a game. I do wish I'd gotten GRAW instead but I was curious about oblivion for awhile, I had to play it sooner or later. It's not horrible either, but there are many things that suck including AI, most quests (at least so far), and the "rpg" elements like stats that you don't even have to look at, they're just doing their own thing. As an rpg it doesn't even qualify, as an adventure game, definitely not the worst I've played.

Well I borrowed Oblivion overnight from BLockbuster, and I must say, even though it has been said that it is quite the shit game by many, it did have me enthralled. Great graphics, but I know that this doesn't equal a good game. But the quests, as shallow as they often are, had me playing for hours on end, as I wanted to know what was going to happen next.

I am definitely not promoting this game, but I am pleasently surprised that it had me so engrossed.

But yeah, GRAW kicks some serious arse. It is a little different from the GRAW on Xbox1, map differences and stuff, but it is one of the better shooters out there.

Oh and try Hitman Blood Money on 360. *THE* best game so far on the console.

I rented Blood Money for the PS2, had just as much fun.

And yeah, Oblivion ran like shite on my computah but I put up with it for a while - was fun, but I got kinda bored eventually since it ran so poorly.

When I get a 360 I'll try to get Oblivion for it so it'll run decently and keep my attention

Really? I didn't like most of the quests. There are some cool ones but a lot of them are sucky, you either fetch stuff or kill someone and it's usually too hard for how unimportant it is. The spying quests are also pretty annoying. But yea it has some cool moments, like the dark brotherhood quests and some main ones.
We're getting completely off topic here but does your game lag when you ride horses?

The game lags at different stages really. Yes, it does happen when I ride horses especially, but generally when the game says "Loading area" (which is no surprise) and combat. Combat lag usually only happens in the open areas and when there are a few people trying to kill you :P

But back to the point. Don't get me wrong maximaz, I didn't enjoy the missions, but it certainly had me wanting to see what was next, thus keeping me going on the game. They are boring and long-winded missions that are just plain unenjoyable.

As much as I was disappointed with Oblivion, I can't deny that I've gotten a lot of hours out of it. Most of them being fun! :P
All in all, it's definitely more of an 'action RPG' than I normally like, and the lack of choices in the dialogue kills me.
The most enjoyable quests for me has without a doubt been the Dark Brotherhood quests. If the entire game had more quests like these, then Oblivion would be a lot better as far as I'm concerned.

To avoid the lag, I had to do endless tweaks to get it running somewhat smooth. The 'autodetect settings' is completely wrong, at least for my system. It sets the textures to Large for example, but there is no way in hell I can run it somewhat smooth unless I bump them down to Medium.
I'd suggest trying that if you haven't already. The game doesn't look quite as nice, but it really runs a lot better.

All in all, I quite like Oblivion, but at the same time it makes me nervous about Fallout 3. The interview where one of the Bethesda dudes say 'Oh, we won't turn away from what we do best' is not very promising for the people who want a new game in the Fallout series (and not Oblivion with guns).

Well playing it on the Xbox 360 makes it a little difficult to change graphics levels :P

yeah I forgot about that topic.

hahaha this one is the best.

My fallout 3 hopes and dreams

-Real time combat
-1st and 3rd person camera, like oblivion and mw, None of this top down gibberish.
-Clothing.. like morrowind, pants, each glove, each shoulder, And underwear, not an ugly blue uniform glued to me
-More vehicles
-More character customization, like oblivion
-giant free roam world

Well thats all i can think of for now. basicly, imagine oblivions graphics and world and such, Only fallout, if that makes sense

He has just raped everything about fallout. but it gets better. he then wrote.

iv only played fallout 2. i didnd finish it either. i got to the part right after you get the geck and you're village is slaughtered, after that i just lost interest in it

*claps*

Having read through that thread, I'm actually feeling more optimistic about Fallout 3. Most people seemed to recognise that Fallout 3 will be required to meet certain criteria in order to be a proper entry into the series, except for maybe a few misguided beliefs concerning making it first person. And real-time. And changing the special system.

Actually, shit. Now I feel worse.

Serifan:

That is Bethesda's target audience.

Those stupid enough to buy shiny crap, and too stupid to care.

Yes and that audience is killing the real gaming industry

I love it because it gives us Indies a chance to make the types of games the big boys can't. :)

The real Satan in computer gaming is not the companies, its people's addiction to flashy graphics. If graphics weren't an issue, games would be cheap to make and you could have real diversity like you have in PnP games.

Serifan:
Have you tried any Indie games yet? Spiderweb is good value for money and mine has an update coming soon that you might want to check out. The only downside is the price will be going up on that update and I'll be raising it again the next update after that.
