Obsidian and Paradox to announce something on March 15th

Except I didn't like any of the factions in Fallout 2. The NCR are dull, Vault City actively makes me hate them, the Shi are also dull, and the families of New Reno are both dull and actively make me hate them. I can't appreciate good faction mechanics if none of the factions are anywhere close to enjoyable. New Vegas has factions that either instantly endear themselves to me or can justify the actions they take in the name of progress. The only reason there was a "forced" independent option was because the main story was about the war for Vegas. There can be no draws in that war, only a winner and two losers (or sometimes three losers)

EDIT: You also can't prove a story is bad. There's no such thing as objectively bad. I really hate Fallout 2's story, but if you like it, nothing I say will change your mind and vice versa.

Sorry, but I can't take you liking the NCR in Vegas and disliking them in Fallout 2 seriously, as they're pretty much the same in both. The only difference I can think of are the characters, but they're a different matter. The Legion is great but sadly not really fleshed out and Mr House is absolutely boring. I found Vault City better written due to being a totalitarian state that has good living conditions, which is rare in fiction and real life. The gangs are also well written and I can't find why you'd hate them (okay, some of them are assholes but not all!) and becoming a gangster has more impact then winning as the courier (what? I like gangsters).

You can't I agree, but all your reasons for disliking it have been explained so it's a matter of you just viewing them badly without looking at the explanations. I think it's mediocre.

There really aren't that many isometric RPGs anymore. Not at all. It just seems like it due to a recent resurgence. I'd say it looks like it has
Bad story? Yeah you still haven't really proven that, though I agree it's mediocre. What Fallout 2 does best is the factions and their rivalries, something they do better over New Vegas in my opinion! It had no forced independent story and was very open. You could make one faction dominate certain areas or be the main power of the game.

Forced Independent storyline? What're you talking about? The game doesn't really give you any huge incentives to side with one side over the others. Each sides have their own benefits. House nets you shittons of caps and a very fancy house to live in. The Legion gives you that nice Legion stash near Cottonwood Cove you can loot every 3 days, + they have an arena and free healing powder at the Fort. (even though you can only fight in the arena 3 times) You can also get really easy caps or ammo/food by turning in NCR dog tags to the Centurion. NCR gives you a lot of friendly locations to sleep in/rest in/eat at and you also get that NCR radio so you can call for supplies or reinforcements. Independent means you're loyal to no one, but with that also comes the fact if you don't want to destroy any certain factions or be enemies, you don't have to. You can side with everyone, or side with no one. Be Idolized by all, or Villified by all. All up to you.

Each side has its own pros and cons, I just listed the pros to make a less long list.

By that I mean there's a clear 'main quest' when it comes to factions. The Independent story line has to be done if you want to finish the game (though I have to admit, if only we didn't have the forced main quest of Fallout 2, we could do so well without it), and it's there no matter what. You can't stop it and you can't get rid of it. If you've ruined all other factions you HAVE to do it. Every game has to give you an incentive, otherwise why would you do anything? So it's not such a big achievement. Honestly, I'd rather become a renowned criminal who gets free gear from the local gun store and can wield his influence to get better deals and respect (and a chance at becoming a porn star) more interesting then getting a house, money or radios. However don't think I'm hating Fallout New Vegas! With mods the Lucky 38 suddenly becomes a really cool addition.

It looks good, very excited even though it isn't Vampire.

I'm already tired of fantasy/medieval setting games and this trailer is tainted by the sin of not showing off any gameplay so yeah, my interest in this project was low to begin with and now it's gone.

(A trailer for a game that doesn't show off ingame content is about as telling of what the game is ultimately going to be like as the cyst on my fathers ass)

[edit]

I just saw the screenshots on its steam page.
Doesn't exactly tell me much, looks typical for a fantasy game set in medieval time. My interest in it is still at father's ass cyst as that's how telling the screens are.

At least the details for the game says it will offer multiple paths and that choices matter.
Still, it's a fantasy medieval game. Bleh.

A game could have the most amazing RPG elements in it and it wouldn't matter if the setting is boring.

I mean, why couldn't they just have used this idea for a PoE sequel?

I have to admit that I am kind of disappointed after seeing that trailer.
I don't mind the background story (Evil has won), though it is not very original. And I also don't mind the game is isometric as I myself haven't seem that many games that used that type of perspective these last couple of years.

But sadly it is yet another fantasy RPG, though I have the idea this is not Tolkien and more Dark Sun meets Ancient Historical Empires like which is a setting that is not much used. (I guess Age of Decadence is somewhat similar)
Still I would have liked to have seen a sci-fi setting (retro, space opera, or hard sci fi), a weird western one, an X Files one (if Obsidian ever would do a kickstarter for a Hellboy/BPRD RPG I would back them on day one), or an historical adventure like one in the vein of Indiana Jones.

I will check out where they will go with this but I can't say this is going to be a purchase.

Oh well, no vampires... At least it's not a sequel and it has an interesting premise.

If combat, varied character creation and varied quests and choices are there, i'm still sold. I would just like them to expand and enrich their pillars of eternity type of combat a bit more, because i felt like their neverwinter nights games had more replay value due to the wonderful girth of DnD rules.

There's not much that can be done if you don't like the setting or that it's isometric, I'm fine with those features. If this game lives up to what the steam page says I see myself dropping a couple hundred hours into it easy.
  • Choices matter - a different player experience every time you play it - As an Officer in the Overlord’s army you wield a vast amount of power in the occupied lands of the Tiers. Will you use that power to inspire stability and loyalty, or will you be a feared oppressor?
  • Challenging, classic RPG combat with modern mechanics and presentation
  • A rich original setting - a completely new and original fantasy world with rich lore and many paths to follow

Way too little info to really say anything, except that I'm curious and that if anyone can pull off letting the player play different types of "evil" it'd be Obsidian.

I'll also say that the screenshots look very close to PoE. Which is great on one hand, becuase it means we'll have a beautiful game. But on the other hand, it might make Tyranny lack much of a personal look/feel.

Sawyer confirmed he's not working on Tyranny. I guess he's working on their Project Louisiana.

So Richard Taylor's leading this project I'm guessing. I believe when he (or someone on his DS3 team) was being interviewed for Dungeon Siege III, they mentioned one of the ideas they're pitching to publishers was a game based on the idea of what if Sauron won or something like that. My memory is fuzzy.

Either way, it's a new Obsidian game with tons of choice-and-consequence. Sign me up! <3

Bah make up your mind people. Either way, I'm excited. I love the setting and idea (it mirrors Legion victory so much!).

It's probably a new Vampire: The Masquerade game, it could be another Fallout game (I know he explicitly said it wouldn't be but people from the entertainment industry have lied before) or another new IP, either way I'm excited.

It was already announced as being Tyranny. Someone posted the trailer earlier in the thread.

Yeah but JE Sawyer confirmed that he was working on a different game set in Louisiana.
Vampire's Masquerade sequel no doubts about it. It's a common setting for vampire novels (okay for one well known one) and it has the right classical vibe of the past.

Ah. Well, hopefully. Personally I'd want Tim Cain to head up that project though since he owned Troika when they made Bloodlines. Sawyer as a writer on it would be terrific though obviously.
