Obsidian CEO Talks Working on Fallout Again

No matter how good they are (Obsidian) at making games - it's Bethesda's story and it's "common denominator" effect. So, I would probably try it, but it wouldn't be any deeper (in any way) then previous one, I sure in it. Reason: it would be catered for same buyers as before, same age, same desires. Bethesda wouldn't allow no other way. But you can bet there would be a ton of new weapons to blaze with. Shiny. Its common denominator is "mediocre", so the game would be like that, it's a no brainer. All potential hype, would be just that; A hype. You would still have hand-holding pointers, mudcrabs, fighting good fights and all those idiocities that we are so eager to forget. NV is different then Beth's F3, but its core has been rotten.

I think they should try its own post-apoc. IP.
The Fallout is about spirit not about who holds the IP legal papers.
The spirit and and some balls that is.

WAA WAAA WAAAAA

"Oh boo hoo, no one's making EXACTLY the Fallout game I WANT AND DEMAND, so the entire IP should just go away."

Psh, some gamers are so entitled. Don't play the game if you don't like where it's going, but don't try to take my enjoyment down with you. Chris Avellone made a marvelous game with Fallout NV, and in particular his story and writing for Old World Blues was brilliant. Why should I be denied more of that, because you want to throw a tantrum?

Meanwhile, thanks for helping fund Wasteland 2. I happen to have the innate ability to look forward to both that and wherever Fallout goes next.

There's a certain line that gets crossed, the further away from an original concept you go. A friend of mine wanted a Fallout game with cars, pedestrians, and set in a modern environment. Awesome, it's called GTA.
Then go buy GTA.

If I wanted an FPS, I woulda gotten an FPS, and when I wanted Fallout 3 I wanted a role-play game, not an FPS, but I got an FPS and felt cheated.

/"tantrum"

Yeah, but now you should get over it and just stop being so attached to the franchise. It can't be changed anymore and being grumpy about it all day won't do any good either.

Up to you if you wish Obsidian to have to make a game with Bethesda's great eye watching everything and giving them a shitty engine. Up to you if you wish developers to have to make shitty games just for a living. Because if Obsidian only wanted to make great games, they wouldn't need to treat with Bethesda.

Beth bought id software, so it's possible that they're finally working on a stable and well-documented engine. If not, then it's a shame.
 Oh man, that's a good one! But seriously, Bethesda has had a love affair with Gamebryo since Morrowind. With Skyrim they "built their own engine" with the Creation Engine, which it sounds like they slapped all of their Gamebryo customizations onto so it's probably pretty similar. They have confirmed that the Creation Engine will be used with at least one additional game, ie Fallout 4.

For those "boo hoo" who might be interested about this rant. If not, skip it.

It's very simple actually. You can relativize every single thing, but at the end of the day, Bethesda is making fallout games that majority of players who liked F1/F2 doesn't consider as a true sequel. That's not a question of good or bad, profit or no profit, fans or haters, it's statement about reality of things. They have shown (in many occasions) that they value old (and new) fans opinions extremely low and are driven solely by a profit (again, not a good or bad thing, just a observation).

As a result of all this (and a lot of other things that I don't have nerves to mention) any new fallout game must be approved by Beth and conform with that asinine new "nuclear trigger happy" lore in which i.e. BOS are "bringing democracy and freedom to the wasteland" and similar great ideas only conjured in someones mind with IQ of room temperature. But that's another story.

Point is I have no problem to try jet another fallout game, but that would be double "wrong" imo. Firstly, it would be, as I said before, game that will be riddled with compromises arisen as a result of Beth's meddling in things, and second thing is more historical (kind of). I noticed when some type of gameplay (as in this example post-apoc.) is thriving, there is a period of total stagnation (right now i.e. 4D space games are very rare as opposed to "golden age" decade ago, but things seems to be changing). By inflating the setting (by making a lots of mediocre post-apoc. games) I'm afraid we will enter in a period where there will not be any post-apoc. games and I wouldn't like that.

About new post-apocalyptic, persistent single-player universe; they have capability to make a new lore. They have writers and brainpower to do so. They should take all good things in fallout and i.e. stalker universe and make it theirs.

Oh, and fill the blanks not mentioned yourself:)

I'd really dig this because I honestly think New Vegas is a better game than Fallout 1. Fallout's never really had great core gameplay anyway. SPECIAL was a hastily put together mess of a system and the combat is slow in a bad way, less about deliberation and tactics and more about waiting for dozens of uninvolved NPCs to move. Not to mention Ian blowing half your torso off.

I don't think my dislike for these systems comes from being some kind of cossetted console babby. My favorite games back in grade school were the Gold Box RPGs. I think instead it's because they're just bad, and they're not what's interesting or compelling about Fallout. What works about Fallout is the world-buildng and quest design. Troika's games, especially Arcanum and Bloodlines, were like that too. It might be different for other people, but that's the stuff that hooked me on Fallout.

New Vegas doesn't have great core gameplay, but I think it does the world-building and quest design better than the original game. Same for environmental story-telling, like Vault 11.

Also, grayx why would they have to compromise on Lore in a hypothetical New Vegas 2 when they didn't in New Vegas? The BoS weren't "bringing democracy to the wasteland" in New Vegas, they were hiding out in a bunker and being their old selves. The game was pretty consistent on the lore front, I thought.

You're summing up what happened to Fallout in the past years quite well.

The game let you to sip coffee and relax a bit, what's wrong with it? Much better than any frenetic action developed later, if you ask me. Anyway, I can foresee how the new Fallout will look like - a lot of those fancy online achievements (and experience points) will popping up every few seconds and perhaps you'll even gain two perks per level. Yay!

I'm a big fan of being able to have a smoke in one hand and play the entire game with the other.

Ok, but we'll end up talking about tastes. It's ok. You think it is. Me: not so much. But, we are comparing apples and oranges in many instances. Fallout was far from perfect but don't forget, F1/F2 were made in past century for god sake...

Yes, I agree, they did a nice job, but, somehow it still had that plastic taste of Beth's F3. In most parts they did what lot of us would do to save the day: they ignored Beth's F3 whenever they could. But that's the problem - why fixing something that's obviously going in a direction that was not logical and expected (by most players at the time) continuation of previous games? I don't have problem with NV; it's good game in its own right. I'm arguing that energy should be invested in creating brand new universe, not wasting it in fixing someone else screw-ups (imo).

I mean guys in skirts, spaceships and fatmans... Honestly, even if I wanted to make a joke out of this IP., I couldn't came up with more idiotic ideas that this.... Maybe, something with zebras or elephants...

@ Mobucks: - You and me both, not enough games are chill and tactical, and those that are are awesome because you get to sit back and take it easy. In this day and age with the kind of stress that we experience in our lives, we dont actually need "more" stress from games when we get home from our jobs, we need the opposite. :)

@ Grayx: - I just thought I'd tell you that your precious post is waaay too complex and riddled with parentheses all over that I have to take a long time deciphering what you're saying - And I dont really feel like doing that. Just saying this so in the future you might want to try and make posts that have higher levels of clarity so that people can understand what you're trying to say. - Dont take this as a personal attack or anything, just noting that you could probably do with less parentheses next time you make a post :D

@ DemonNick: - Gold box games were amazing, and I agree with your post entirely. My only issue with Obsidian if they get to make a fallout new vegas 2 is that I'd want them to have a better business contract so they dont have to fire good people, but I suspect they wont make a deal if it isn't good for them. I care about them a lot as developers because their games always get me to think deeply about things and I generally enjoy them so there.

Problem is i don't have the same feeling playing the old fallout that the new one.
The gameplay and the view are so different it doesn't feel at all the same kind of game.
So it's sad they still call those games fallout, especially if you like better the old TB isometric gameplay.
I'm not excited by it and i'd rather like they made a new cRPG IP.
So to make it short :
