Obsidian has already proven they could do wonders with the Fallout 4 dialogue system

FearMonkey

Vault Senior Citizen
Alpha Protocol.

It only had 4 dialogue options at a time but it had probably the deepest choice and consequence narrative of any game I've ever played pretty much ever as far as I remember at least. :P

You mostly even only had 3 dialogue stances you could take a time: Professional, Suave, and Aggressive. Occasionally there'd be a 4th option at the bottom if you had a particular knowledge, skill or a veteran character with unique dialogue option. Yet the game was still very well-written with a ton of choice and consequence. They could easily apply this to Fallout: New Sacramento or whatever and deliver a good story with lots of depth.

So I think it's not necessarily the system that's at fault, but the writing and execution applied to it. Obviously I would prefer the dialogue system to be like it was in Fallout 2 or New Vegas, but Obsidian has proven if they were theoretically forced to use FO4's system, they could make an insanely deep story with a lot of choice & consequence.

This video has spoilers but it shows how different the game can end up being when you're negative versus Fallout 4's "Hate Newspapers" options:

This video shows the Marburg conversation in the previous video but choosing more professional dialogue stances, just to see how different the results can be:

And of course, this video should give an idea how they can do companion introductions:

So yeah, Obsidian is still the best candidate to do the next Fallout spin-off, if one happens at all that is.

Wellll Obsidian did say they're looking to announce something in the next 2 or 3 months, and that they have been talking to some Fallout 1 dude a lot lately

Its funny you bring up Alpha Protocol, when I have seen numerous review sites bring up Alpha Protocol as an example of everything wrong with Fallout 4' dialogue system.

Obsidian could do more than improve their dialogue system.
They could improve the writing, lore, quests, weapon design, and-- well-- pretty much everything.

I don't think you need to aim very high to improve upon:
Will you help me with those raiders?
  1. Sure, I'd be happy to help.
  2. Yes, but when I do a job I expect to get paid.
  3. Absolutely, I love any opportunity to get shot full of holes. [Sarcastic]
  4. I'm going to need more information. Also, yes.

I saw some that mentioned similarities but none that cite it an example of a bad use of the system. Could you provide a link?

Anyone could do better than Bethesda did in F4. It's comparable to conversation among people with low cognition or autistic. I guess the people Todd spend his time with in his rehab clinic.

The combat is fine once you level up and get more accurate which proves it's more of an RPG than Mass Effect 2/3 are. Mass Effect 1 still has the RPG system where if your crosshairs is on a target, you might miss due to dice rolls. But the CoD fanboys complained so they removed all that from ME2/3. :P

I wonder why Obsidian won't sell the game directly? (and/or on GoG)
There are even vendors that sell their own game direct ~and include a Steam key for it.

The fact that it's a Steam purchase is the only reason I haven't bought it yet.

Sega owns the rights as they were the ones that funded it. Obsidian can't sell it themselves or make sequels to it.

I think the issue is that it's a SEGA game, not an Obsidian-owned game so Obsidian has no control over where or how it's sold.

The combat of me1 sucks and I'm not sad that it was retooled from the sequels.

Also the level up system in it was really, really bad.

Alpha Protocol was actually more like Deus Ex, where it actually feels good to play a character after you leveled it up, but ME1 feels crappy even if you are capped out.

Alpha Protocol is actually one of my favorite games, warts and all. And it has more than most. Though, frankly, I just want to see Obsidian play with the toys in FO4's box. New Vegas with decent shooting and a *slightly* more competent framework would be wonderful. I want it more than anything but I will not be holding my breath.

Same here. Obsidian could do so much, but what kind of restrictions is Bethesda going to make?

Hopefully not many, but who knows. I'd like to see Obsidian take a crack at the voiced protagonist bit-they could make that really shine, I think. Well, hopefully better choice of VA. Mike Thorton was a bit...dry? lol

Bethesda would have to be out of their mind to make the business decision not to ask Obsidian to make another Fallout game.

I don't know why people are so pessimistic regarding this possibility. Fallout: New Vegas was a great success and sold a LOT. You would be absolutely insane as a business not to do that again because it's a lot of money we are talking about. And allowing it to happen would get good press from Fallout fans who are miffed at the shift away from an RPG and away from the original Fallouts.

I see no downside whatsoever to having Obsidian make another Fallout game for anyone including Bethesda. Only positives.
