Obsidian's Project Eternity

It's obvious by the replacement poem that they were just avoiding unneeded drama from the internet horde and that they are aware of how completely stupid the reaction was anyway.

It offends me that you people are such pussies you get offended by everything, stop doing that. Stop oppressing me.

Devs and Artists nowadays could learn a thing or two from Frank Cho:

Once again, there is no principle to stand by. It wasn't intended by dev nor were supported by any justification. It was just a joke, not a case they were trying to defend.
If freedom of speech aint one of your principles, then we don't see eye to eye. And that's probably why we're having this conversation. ;)
We take these things for granted and shouldn't allow anyone to take it away from us so lightly as you do.
Well it wasn't them that made the replacement poem, it was the backer.
As said, only because he had to. :)

Now let's get to discussing the game, shall we? This is leading us nowhere.

Oh for fuck's sake, do we really have to deal with this bullshit here too? Obsidian's official forums still can't go for more than a day without yet another post about that.

The overreaction on both sides is as pathetic as it is predictable. I didn't like the joke myself, but it wasn't offensive in any way, it just made fun of a guy who can't stand transgenders and kills himself for it. Of course a couple of idiots on Twitter will make loud noises about it, it's what twitter does.

On the other hand, the people who are subsequently strangling themselves in rage calling it censorship by feminazis lost all sense of perspective. Obsidian asked the backer if he wanted to change the limerick, he said yes, and made another one who poked fun at the entire situation which was added back. The devs said they didn't see the limerick before release, and wouldn't have allowed it had they found out beforehand. We can trust Obsidian or not here, but I do. It's yet another stupid ''controversy'' spawned between GG and anti-GG, who now only exist to pointlessly snipe at each other and make mountains out of molehills.

The game's really fucking good, I love it, and it's just ridiculous how people talk more about that stupid limerick. Bah.

Ilosaur beat me to it. Shut the fuck up.

Monks are cool. (when you cheat all their stats to 20) ((I suck at this game))

I am playing a monk, per my obssesion with Unarmed combat in RPGs. How fucked am I then?

I wouldn't say you're fucked.

But I would say that, among rogues, barbarians, monks, fighters and paladins, monks are probably the poorest melee dps class because they need to take damage to use their powerful abilities, and if you're not a tank in PoE, you get killed quite fast in melee. So you either need to up your defensive attributes and constitution in disfavor of Might and Dex, or be prepared to be quite a glass cannon. And if you want to be a glass cannon, I find rogues do much more damage in melee and have escape abilities if things go south.

Fortunately, the monk's fists scale quite well, so it's not a useless class. But if you're planning on running Path of the Damned, i wouldn't recommend it.

Well, there is a thread on POE forums about class balance, and one guy pretty much sums up how I feel about the monk:

Monk is so counter intuitive. Rogue/Barb do more dps, even in their defensive builds. Just take one of these in your party instead of Monk. Apart from lower dmg and bad talents, you need to get hit to gain resource. So it's tank build or bust....yet he's a worse tank than Fighter/Paladin and even Chanter...... He's a walking oxymoron, or just a moron. And lol, fists go to crap fast.

Where are the classic Monk talents that give fists -DT? Where are the bonus DT in cloth? The Magic resists? Where is the deflect? Why is he called monk?

The thing is, I want to play a monk. So I cheated his stats. Much better "classic" monk feeling. Then I felt bad about cheating so I've shelved the game for now.

On another note:
I don't really dig the whole "hire an adventurer you create that has no personality to fill out your party" mechanic. In BGs there were tons of NPCs to join that were interesting. Is it the same in POE? IDK.

edit: Futher reading that thread, it looks like some people who actually don't suck really like their monks. Worth a read: http://forums.obsidian.net/topic/76011-lets-talk-class-balance/

Ciphers are not only pretty godlike if played well, they also more often add dialogue options than other classes. As far as abilities, they have nice AoE spells with chained damage, a nice high damage piercing attack and a gazillion mindfucks at their disposal. That's pretty noice (though friendly fire can be an issue), especially since you're not bound to resting like other damage caster classes.

As for party members, mobucks? You fairly quickly get your party full and need to start making choices in who you bring along or not. Hell, in the first big town you can already add two party members? I don't really get your complaint. It's only at the very start where you might want to consider getting an extra adventurer.

I'd say that the Grieving Mother is the most useful party member, both in story-development and combat (Cipher). Her & Eder (fighter) never left my party.

So, it's better if I focus on defensive capabilities with my monk?
From what I gather, it is/was the only way to keep monks viable (since you need to take a beating to be able to generate your spirit/mana/whatever). Though this might've been patched already.

If you want to do damage, your monk needs to take damage. However, they aren't tanks; going in first will overwhelm. My monk wears a 0 AC robe, has a pitiful 6 CON (the game's dump stat,IMO), but maxxed out Dex for attack speed. All other stats are 13/14 pre-gear/buffs. If things get really hairy for him, it's hilarious watching him use Force of Anguish on four enemies in rapid succession, sending them each flying in a different cardinal direction. Focus on Accuracy, Interrupt, DR bypass talents and attack speed. With Turning Wheel and some wounds, this guy hits/crits for the same damage as a greatsword with the speed of unarmed.

Vulnerable Attack is a modal talent I permanently use for the 5 DR bypass. It has a -20% attack speed debuff but that is cancelled out by taking the Two Weapon Style talent.

Overall I'm really enjoying this class now.
