This never felt retarded. I will say I just prefer the old anime art style to modern stuff.
 
Ghost Hound is about a kid who survived a kidnapping when he was little.... but his sister did not, living in a small town, he is seeing a therapist about his ptsd but it's fairly clear that it's his mom the one more in need of therapy. The kidnapping itself is the cause of a lot of drama because the kidnapper was the dad of one his school mates.

WOnder Egg Priority deals with a girl who gets the power to lay resteless spirits to rest who are all murdered girls so it explores a lot of issues about how young women are threated in Japan.
 
Wonder Egg Priority is very similar to Persona.

Other reccomendations:
Mushi Shi, Baccano (it's like a Tarantino anime), Paranoia Agent and Serial Experiemnts Lain.

Plot of this sounds about right.

Baccano I dislike that art style.
 
Paranoia Agent is about a mysterious apparition called Bat Boy (Or like the dub calls him Lil' Slugger), a kid with a baseball bat that randomly assaults people and it's kind of like a shared hallucination/Urban fantasy, every character that meets Bat Boy is going through some shit, the picture you posted there is of one of the weirder stories.

Anything by Satoshi Kon, although Walp has already reccomended that. Uhh... psychological thrillers are kinda limited if you want to avoid the dumb stuff.

Side bote: I feel like Gainax peaked with their Wings of Honnamiese debut. Eva is weird and has action but pretty shallow at the end of the day.
 
Anything anywhere close to Twin Peaks is really the vibe I am talking about. I don't like monsters running around crashing through the city and shit if I can help it. I like all that in some kind of astral realm or mental projection as implied with the urban legend thing.

This is fine though. Still I wish we had a good Ghostbusters-esque anime. Fatal Frame even.
 
That's kinda the point with Higurashi, it looks cutesy and slice of lifey at first glance, but I get if the art style is off puting.
 
It's not that the art is bad it is just not the kind of art I want in a series like that. I grew up on Vampire Hunter D and I slant that way always for better or worse.

I pretty much watch all of my anime for free on:

I don't know if it's legal or not (some places say it's legal or mostly legal, other places say it's not), but they have existed for ages and never got taken down. I also don't have an account and can still watch all of the stuff for free.
