PC PowerPlay Australia reviews Fallout 3

Even though it still feels like its not by any means a "real" Fallout sequel, by the looks of this reviewer seems like there's some (little) pieces of the Interplay/Black Isle Fallout games, that, the 3D atmosphere (i remember playing Fallout 1/2 and wondered how would it "look" in a first person viewpoint), some proper mod tools, can still make in the future an appealing game.

Don't give me the "if what someone says matches what I've seen I'll be more apt to believe him then when it doesn't."

Why not? It's the best answer people can give you.

I don't think the Canard preview is perfect, in fact it's not very good*. Neither is any of the others I've seen. But this one matches most closely what I've actually seen of the game with my own eyes.

What's wrong with thinking the review that matches what you've seen best is probably the most honest one?

* Keep in mind this is a satirical magazine, tho'. To criticize it for not writing in the clean, concise style of others is like criticizing Yahtzee for doing the same. And as with Zero Punctuation, I wouldn't rely on only this piece as a source of info.

I get what you mean BN, i do. I'm not saying there's anything wrong with listening more to someone who says stuff that matches your viewpoint, as long as you also see what others who disagree with you say too; which it seems many of the people here don't

there are people here who do see the ups as well as the down, this was more aimed at the people who close off all other sources than those that appeal to them. I just happened to use what you said because it was the best wording for it.

also, quick question...if i spell a word wrong does the spell check here call me a douche or is that someone tampering?

Then why do you call people who do look at both the pros and the cons but decide that they still don't like the game fanboys?

I honestly have checked both sides, and while I like some of the graphics I feel it still isn't a Fallout game.

Okay, the whole Troll part might have gone to far but if you have met several people who attack your opinion because they find its a good game and are there for automatically right, after a while you put them all on one heap.

i dont call people who look at both sides and still dislike it fanboys, only the ones who can't find even one thing that they can say was good....

im pretty sure there's more than just some nice graphics to go along with this game though.

Also fallout series died long before this game began production, it died with fallout 1/ Fallout 2 was much lighter and had to much camp to really capture the original to a T/FO:T was combat based, in a story/dialogue driven rpg series/FO:BOS was the best frisbee money can buy and FO3, well i haven't layed it yet but i think it looks pretty fun; though not without it's flaws

If David Wildgoose managed to snag the review spot, then it would be worth noting how much of a fan of "classic" RPGs he is. Although I have a feeling maybe Anthony Fordham did this one. Maybe? I dunno, haven't had a subscription to the mag for years.

How many people here can't find even one good thing about the game? I, for example, think that the eyebots and protectrons look cool.

The beginning of the review is curious.

Ever since Bethesda announced its plans for a first/third-person action RPG, die-hard fans have been grabbing their inhalers and taking to the streets, furious at this act of blasphemy.

I'm not sure how asthma is tied to being a Fallout fan. Does one cause the other ?

This comedy gem was a bit later followed by another one:

And don't get us started on the lack of isometric gameplay! Oh god!

oh come on! you guys just CAN'T accept that this is a good game!
We've all been here before with BethSoft - Oblivion....

As CanardPC put it
But have no fear, even though I was deprived of my screenshots, I'm not deprived from my opinion. Condolences: Fallout 3 is a sluggish device, soulless, not exactly terrible, actually almost enjoyable, but totally forgettable because of uncountable dishonest compromises.
sounds like a review of Oblivion - soulless, forgettable, not exactly terrible, almost enjoyable....

We're seeing the same hype for F3 as for Oblivion and OB wasn't so great, so F3 has to prove itself worthy of being purchased with no benifit of a doubt.

Please note @kikomiko, no one here is telling you that you are wrong to like what you see of F3, or that you should dislike F3, so why is it that we HAVE to like F3 - that we have to accept F3 as a good game?

Besides, I'm still playing and replaying World of Goo, the best game released this year

Good call BN! Just got it today, it's just such a breath of fresh air. I'll be listening to your recommendations in future!

To be fair, I'm rarely as excited about a game as I am about World of Goo. It's easily the best game I've played this year.

I should be doing a review for it soon. Obviously not for GameBanshee (RPG-only), but for another site. I'm seriously considering giving my first (and probably only) 10/10 ever.

The where and how much time this reviewer had with the game.

Under what cercumstaces did Alan Moore review the game and how long did he have to play it?
In a hotel room "on the 74th floor of the Meriton World Tower", and I believe they (likely all early reviewers) don't get to play very long.

Thanks. Was it in the article somewhere and I just overlooked it?
The actual reviewer gave an introduction at the beginning of the reviews section in the mag, mentioning when he played the review build for F3.

I was trying to get my fingers on world of goo on steam, but it was pulled down and re-delayed in europe or something.

Looked like a awesome game, going to pay for it just because it's DRM free like the good old days.

edit:(i pay for my games)

Stop being a fanboy. The game's short, there are some issues with the controls, lack of support for alternate resolutions, unskippable cutscenes and restrictions on menu options make getting OCD on each stage a pain in the ass.

The game is great and was still worth a pre-order, though.

Indeed Kharn, you're an example of all that is wrong with gaming journalism.

Stop lining your pockets with bribes, and write honest reviews ffs!

Heh, the unskippable cutscenes and game's shortness were two things I was thinking to name as flaws in the review - I hate unskippable cutscenes.

I have a weird resolution (1440x900) and have had no trouble with it, tho'. And I'm not sure what you mean with restrictions on menu options cutting into OCD. The only control issues I noted is how hard it can be to select the right goo at times. Wonder how it plays on the Wii - can't imagine it being very good.

Ok so 9.5 probably.

You've not done any editing of the config.txt, have you? Then it'd be running in 800x600. Widescreen resolutions can mean you can't actually click on 'continue' after finishing a level.

OCD gets screwed since after meeting the normal goals of a level, you can only choose 'continue', not 'retry'. Then you have to watch the cutscene after and before the level, if any. Not fun.
And yeah, the controls are lacking when you try to select a specific type of goo, especially if that happens to be an already placed vine goo, with 50 others running all over it (Product Launcher OCD, for instance). What's weird is that this is not a bug, but supposedly a feature to make the game more accessible.

Also, I've noticed about the OCD thing, when you complete the minimum requirements, all of the little time machine eye floaties disappear (the ones where you click and you go back a move). Really sucks when you make one tiny mistake near the end and have to start all over.
