Plasma or Laser

Mr Krepe

Water Chip? Been There, Done That
Right, I was spurred by the guns or energy weapons thread, to create a laser or plasma thread. I've noticed many people have different views on the laser/plasma debate, mine being that plasma has limited uses, and lasers will rule the day. I mostly think this due to the fact laser weapons fire quick, so will always hit the target, whereas a plasma weapon will shoot slow, the target will then move, and the bolt will zoop past. Anyone care to share their opinions?

As aiming is randomized, an accurate but slow weapon is useless compared to a fast firing weaker weapon.

In the energy weapons category anyway.

Personally I like lasers because I love! Star wars and Star Trek! I'm not that nerdy about them but the Pew pew of lasers rocks! Plus there is a laser weapon called Pew pew How can you hate that!

Maybe it's just the elitist/superiority complex in me but I always prefer plasma. Sure plasma is no-where near as rare or powerful as it was but I just can't shake it from my head.

Until I get my Gauss Pistol it will be plasma all the way.

Exactly. Instead of a pissy beam in Fallout 1 & 2 it was a full on bolt.

Seconded.

Thirded for great justice. The weapon may be almost worthless past medium range, but it's still awesome.

Laser all day, erry day.

That said, there's just something about plasma weapons that make them so attractive to use. Plus, the AER9 is kinda shitty.

I hope the Smitty Special - or whatever the unique Plasma Caster in GRA is called - has a kickass model. Maybe a little more durability as well; I'd expect industrial-grade military hardware to be able to take a beating.

Fourthed. Freakin' caster took down the legendary death claw with three shots! That things got some kick!

I also like the Lasers because of the versatility. It has High damage Aka Pew Pew Has Long Range Has Automatic Fire, and has a stun gun if you get the dlc. But no doubt the Plasma Caster is a beast!

Gun Runner's Arsenal. I'm still on the fence about it, personally, but if there really is a "Smitty Special" that's one more argument for me buying it. I'm a sucker for the little nods to Fallout 1 & 2, what can I say?

As to the question at hand, when using energy weapons I generally prefer Plasma in the original Fallouts (if we're disregarding Pulse weapons) and lasers in FO3 and NV. I used to belong to the "plasma caster beats all" faction, but Elijah's Advanced LAER evens the playing field enough to make lasers a viable late-game option again.

Maybe it's the physicist in me, but personally, I get cancer all over my body whenever I see laser-bolts.
I really like the laser-beams in Fallout 3 and New Vegas, but the weapon design sucks.
Where's my Wattz 2000?
Anyway, Plasma Caster for the win.
Smitty's Special is going to rule.

Snob. Your like my uncle; tried to make him watch Star Wars and after five minutes of silence he just asked, "Why do the lasers explode?"

If I hadn't dropped Physics - and could therefore call myself a "physicist" - I would have no problem anyway.

I was pretty on the fence about laser weapons in general in Fallout 3. They looked puny and were puny.

I would have prefered something with a more Enclave-bent but the Smitty Special will still be good.

As far as stats go I love the plasma caster. Hate how it looks though, enough that I never use it. It's like a robot penis attached to a utility box. And don't get me started on plasma bolts.

Now the LAER is a thing of beauty. Just as deadly, better range, better ammo usage and it makes special friends with laser commander. Not to mention that it is great looking. Give me that or the sonic emitter and I'll happily Science! all night long.

It's not exactly snobism. I study physics and get exposed to actual scientific knowledge on a regular basis. If that happens to you for some time, you automatically begin to see fatal flaws in fiction everywhere.
By the way, lasers explode because they rapidly heat a tiny spot, causing it to erupt into steam and even plasma.
The Star Wars blasters fire plasma, actually, but Star Wars is beyond any form of physics. It's phantasy and I'm fine with that :D

Star Wars blasters actually fire particle beams, probably because it sounds cool.

Conflicted, the Wattz laser rifle will always have a place in my heart and I never go outside without the New Vegas mod for it but the plasma defender and caster are things o' beauty.
