If I was 12 years old, I'd praise both games as if they were gifts from God due to their "awesumz mutant shewting AXON!". However, as a 19-year-old, these games are just insulting. They're so dumbed down in order to cater to the casual, console-gaming majority it makes me sick. I don't find it fun to poke around generic city ruins looking for that stupid adhesive and reading wacky stories from terminals, while blasting some ghoul/mutant/raider heads every once in a while. I enjoy RPG's that are well-written, offer interesting and meaningful choices, lack excessive hand-holding and present a challenge. Everything that F1, 2 and NV consist of, basically.

So, yes, they're both bad. Sadly, the gaming industry is becoming much like the music industry. Actual good, well thought out music isn't as profitable, so big record companies sign talentless "artists" with that one annoying "hit song" filled with studio effects and autotune. That shit SELLS because most people don't understand what makes music good. That's why Fallout 3 and 4 sell too.

Rant over.

You forgot Fallout NV.

Fallout NV >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>> Fallout 3 > Fallout 4

And if you're wondering about "Fallout 3 > Fallout 4" it's only because FO3 still treated the S.P.E.C.I.A.L. and skill points system with a semblance of respect. I can't really be bothered comparing the writing of FO3 vs FO4, it's like comparing which is the smallest turd.

Less than stellar dialogue hardly makes a bad game with all the new positives the game has added.

It does if the game is supposed to be an RPG, where dialogue is crucial.

Regardless of how many bells whistles they tack on, it's still a mundane, shallow experience compared to what came before--Fallouts 1, 2, and New Vegas, specifically.

Bethesda spent more time marketing the Pip-Boy phone holder, Fallout Shelter, Dogmeat, Settlement Crafting, and how Codsworth can "SAY OVER A THOUSAND NAMES! WOW!!" than actually thinking about making a role playing game.

Exactly how I feel except I personally liked Fallout 3 because I didn't play Fallout 1 and 2 until after I played 3 and I think it was a good game on its own. Games like Morrowind, Dragon Age: Origins, Mass Effect 1, Pillars of Eternity, Fallout 1, 2, 3, and New Vegas made me believe in video games as a legitimate form of art. Then I played Fallout 4 and learned what happens to art when business executives start calling the shots. I personally even loved Oblivion because it was a very relaxing game to play with an excellent music score, but Skyrim was my limit to how much Bethesda can dumb down and mass market a franchise before I find it low quality, and Fallout 4 is a direct extension of that trend.

The path to the CEO's office should be through Research & Development, not Marketing and Finance.

Are you guys genuinely angry that more people (specially console owners) are enjoying the Fallout series? What's up with this stupid hate for "casual" gamers?

Let me giyya reason why I'm already sick of Fuckout 4:

I encountered Vault 81 and the first thing they asked me to do before they could let me in is to find them exactly 3 fusion cores - apparently due to some failed something something need power (just a lazy "initiation" quest, really). I already had them so I told her and they let me in. Just like that. I could have been lying but, because the game already knows itself, she didn't even give a shit.

I gave her the fusion cores so she could do literally nothing with them. After this, I went down the elevator and to the vault's trader. You'll never guess what she has to sell? A fucking fusion core! Yep, the game is so utterly lazily constructed that I found the very thing they were after right under their noses.

And this is just one example. Other times I'll see perfectly fine frag grenades in trash cans (because, there's nothing worse than having your pockets full of explosives and having nowhere to recycle 'em).

There's also the shitty dialogue. I discovered just today that my character finds the "if I told you I'd have to kill you" "joke" funny. I had no idea she was going to say that because the button I had to press literally said "joke". For all I knew, my character might have found the grueling - almost slavish - work hours of whatshisface a hilarious ordeal. The entire game reeks of cut corners and a lack of care; all so the Bethesdian disciples can marvel at Todd the Godd with a beautiful Bodd's most recent bowel movement a few months before Beta release.

What's that? This is the final release? Oh. Oh God. I, I guess war... war never I guess war never never I guess. *cough* 'scuse me - war never ch- *ahem* change-thank you Bethesda.

I know right? It's almost as if more intelligent people enjoy more intelligent forms of entertainment and giving them something with even less intellectual and emotional maturity than a Michael Bay film doesn't amuse them...

If you can't see that Fallout 4 is not just a bad Fallout game but is a bad game on its own without the word Fallout in the title then good for you because you will enjoy pretty much every future video game. If this game wasn't titled Fallout 4 and wasn't made by Bethesda it would've been slammed by everyone as an absolute MESS.

I know you're a troll but there's unfortunately people that actually have that "opinion" if you can even call it that.

Gonna copy and paste this shit to my friend who keeps telling me to get FO4. He's still gonna defend Bethesda to the death.

I honestly can't say much about the campaign through direct own experiences but when it comes to general gameplay Fallout 3 and 4 play pretty much the same.
For the last couple of days I have been going through a shitload of locations, buildings, and settlements just so I have them all on the map and explored and I can honestly tell you that I am bored out of my mind.
Normally I find exploration very interesting and rewarding as that is part of the fun of an open world but so far it has only resulted in uncovering nests of raiders, feral Ghouls, Super Mutants, the occasional wildlife, robots, and a few times I ran into Synths. All the while collecting junk like TV dinner plates, empty Nuka Cola bottles, dirty ashtrays, empty cans, lighters, phones, bread boxes, electric fans, and so on.

I must have lost my mind, deciding to explore all these locations because it really is not worth the pain unless you are some kind of masochist or absolutely have to have each and every location on your pipboy map.
Sure the Glowing Sea is pretty atmospheric and shows that some of Bethesda's designers occasionally get the right idea but it feels like whip-cream on a turd sandwich.
It would have been better just to have gone through the main campaign and get the quest that sends me here because at this point Fallout 4 has effectively neutered my interest in exploration.

I am going to take a break from this stupid thing for a couple of weeks and focus on more important things. And if I want to want to unwind I will just read some good comics, books, or play a round of Star Wars Yoda Stories.

Which is better? Eeeeh...I'm not sure yet. On one hand FO3 was way, WAY more clunky in its combat, on the other structurally was more of an RPG. I have been playing for ~20 hours and so far I have encountered only ONE settlement and two brief non-combat quests.

People aren't enjoying the Fallout "Series". FO1-2 are vastly different from FO3. You might love FO3 and be disgusted by the dumbing down of FO4 and be uninterested in the story elements because Bethesda down't give a fuck about canon. People are enjoying individual games with only broad similarities between them. Fallout isn't a series anymore.

And even if you still consider it as such most people aren't enjoying the Fallout "series". They are enjoying the Bethesda "Fallout series", with a lot of people finding New Vegas (the only one resembling the originals) "boring".

And people are angry because this enjoyable but bastardized, poorly written, poorly thought out open world FPS is repeadetly defined "the best in the series".

There is nothing wrong with beeing a "casual gamer". Just as how there is nothing wrong with beeing a casual bookreader, moviegoer or what ever. The casual entertainment is a market and if a product is made witht hat in mind, there is absolutely nothing wrong with that. We all enjoy that sometimes. Quite often probably.

The casual gamer and casualisation is used very often as a synomyn though, for the lack of better words. I tend to like Gizmos idea of the Fallout tourist a lot more, as this actualy describes accurataly the new kind of Fallout fan. The one that love Fallout to death, simply because of the post-apoc setting, but never even played the first and second Fallout game. Not even cared so much to read a plot synopsis. For most of them Fallout started with Bethesda.

Fallout in the minds of gamers is now a first person RPG shooter hybrid, with a high focus on combat and shooter mechanics. And I am generous here. Because honestly? For me Fallout 3s and even more so Fallout 4s RPG mechanics can be barely identified. They are pure FPS games now. But since Bethesda as company has a history as RPG maker - actually more dungeon crawlers/roque like games, but let us not get in to that - and is also coincidentally making FPS games with swords and horses and open world, and selling it all as RPGs, people that buy them don't really see Bethesda games as shooters and/or adventure games.

But Fallout was never meant to be a first person game. So even if it is not really accurate, people use the term casualisation here to describe the change from F1/F2 to F3 and F4. Bethesda deliberatly changed the gameplay and visuals to appeal to the mass market and to make money. Fallout simply wasn't meant to be for everyone, just as how racing games or simulations are not meant for everyone. However they turned the game into something that can be literaly enjoyed by almost everyone, while loosing a lot of depth and quality a long the way.

No. Quite frankly I don´t give a damn about other people on this regard. What pisses me off is that I can no longer enjoy a saga that I used to love. New Vegas gave me a small measure of hope, even though it was not developed by Bethesda. But now I see there is no hope for "old-guard" RPG players regarding Fallout. It´s dead, and the more it sells the deeper it will be buried under the weight of "casuals".

No, but failing to understand why we are and making baseless assessments towards this community does tend to make us bitter.

I am always curious when people talk about casual gamers and professional gamers. Are 'casual' gamers sometimes frustrated or disappointed when a game is made that is not directly oriented towards them?
That a product like say a flight sim or a business simulator does not allow a more broad approach in which gamers can fool around without it having consequences?

I think you just gave developers an idea for a first-person shooter based on Microsoft Flight Simulator...
