Simple question. Does Fallout 3 being officially canon bother you?

I'm pretty indifferent on the subject, myself. I like the old Fallout games and the new ones. I think Fallout 3 fits somewhat nicely within the canon but I'd like to hear your thoughts.

What do you mean 'bother'? I personally feel there's nothing wrong with. It introduced several inconsistencies and did some very sloppy things to/with the theme, but then again so did fallout 2. There was once a time that the thought of tribals in a fallout game was seen as an extremely bad and stupid idea. Same thing with a few other areas. We see many aspects of fallout 3 as stupid and horrible right now, but I think with time and more games to expand upon them, they will settle into their place in the cannon

Doesn't bother me at all, in terms of canon.
Fallout tactics and BoS do, but those aren't canon, so no problem there.

Fallout 3? After Fallout 2 and Tactics? After BoS was canon for a while?

I mean, it's not necessarily *good* that it is, it doesn't really improve the setting, but it's not one of the worst things to ever happen to the setting either. It's more thematically inconsistent than it is a canon-killer, its biggest problems canon-wise tend to revolve around an obsessive need for lipservice to the franchise (presence of BoS, Supermutants, Enclave, Harold).

Erm? What? What was canon breaking in Fallout 2?

The Enclave, the Vault experiments, and people regressing to tribalism are a few things Fallout 2 introduces that I think are pretty dubious. Things it introduces that are definitely dubious are New Reno being an operating gambling/prostitution/drugs hub with no other industry or trade and, in case you forgot, talking deathclaws.

Talking.

Deathclaws.

And that's not even starting on all the easter egg horseshit. Fallout 2 was a mess.

Easer eggs make a bad game /Brother None

And this is why i lost faith in people on these forums. .. And when i think of it every single Fallout game "sucked" somehow if we are going by the fan base so people should probably find a new and better serie to play..

Don't put words in my mouth. I didn't call Fallout 2 a bad game, at all. I think Fallout 2 is a good game.

Are you saying there weren't too many references in Fallout 2? That there is no grounds for criticism there? That the constant barrage doesn't hurt the setting?

Regresion to Tribalism is dubbious? Why? What where the Khans, Vipers and Jackal in FO1 then?

Only one of those is in Fallout 1. And they're not tribal societies. They didn't forget about guns, or live by limited farming and hunting with spears. SPEARS!

That's the problem in Fallout 2. I know post-apocalyptic fiction has the tendency to make people dress up funny, and while I'm no huge fan, that's fine in principle. But Arroyo descends straight from people who fled Vault 13. Less than 80 years after it was founded the people who lives there forgot about weaponry and technology, refuse to live in the sheltered temple near their village for no apparent reason, live in tents despite being sedentary, and believe in prophecies and chosen ones. You don't see anything wrong there? The Vault Dweller died in 2208, less than 40 years before Fallout 2 kicks off, his daughter leads them as of now, yet somehow they regressed to complete tribalism and primitivism? That just doesn't happen.

The Vipers and the Jackals are emntioned in FO1. They don't appear in game but their tribalistic behavior is commented.

Only Arroyo is dubious, because we know it's origins.

But other Societies regresing to tribalism is not that farfetched.

Oh. Yeah sure, it can happen, if you provide the right explanation, context, and don't nonsensically take out guns or the like. Arroyo just doesn't happen, and they're the tribals of Fallout 2.

There is also Sulik's Tribe, though they don't actually appear, and some of the cannibals in random encounters.

It bothers me a bit. FO3 is actually a pretty enjoyable game, I honestly enjoyed trekking Capitol Wasteland more than Mojave but I don't like it how Bethesda juggles with many traits characteristic to older games (BoS, Muties, Enclave, Harrold etc.), misuses them and in the end establishes it as cannon despite them being ranted on by fans who actually played first two instalments. It's like being 12 years old and walking to a room only to see your mom humped by Santa Claus. I haven't played the first two Fallouts as a kid, but I can imagine Beth shattered many people's childhood/adolescence times with their game, that is if they weren't previously disappointed with PoS and Tactics (which I find pretty neat imo).
Now all I hope is the next Fallouts not taking place in DC. Perhaps they learned something and the next game, supposedly set in Boston, will deliever.

Enclave. In this case, BoS from FO1 is also dubious.

Vaults exist in Fallout 1, only their purpose isn't explained. Yeah, lore of Fallout shouldn't evolve, and you shouldn't get any new info for imporant things from Fallout universe in new games. It's also a far better, because in theory, Van Buren would give us another nice info about Vaults. (space program)

New Reno, Junktown. Same.

Only with easter eggs I can agree. They killed all atmosphere.

As others already said, Fallout 2 started with the goofy shit. I find it at times even worse than the crap that FO3 introduced. So no, I personally don't care.

FO3 is only cannon if it is actually an emeblished propaganda Story coocked up by the BOS in their DC campaign...
