Shocked that it hasn't been mentioned yet...

Crusader: No Remorse and/or Crusader: No Regret

A sci-fi isometric shooter. One of the most nostalgic games in my collection, I remember asking my dad to buy it for me, to which he pointed out "hmm, 60 megabytes? I doubt it will fit on our computer."

Very fun, fast paced. You can roll around and do a bunch of cool things like that, makes a takedown pretty satisfying actually :).

The music is absolutely perfect in this game, there are some tracks that I can easily listen to outside of the game. It's great to see the story (not a strong point, but the game revolves around the action) unfold with well-acted movies/cinematics, and you'll find some likable characters along the way.

Nobody has mentioned this arcade classic yet:

This little bit of topdown action constantly had me and my friends returning to this tiny pizza place that had a Gauntlet 2 table. It's all in all a simple fun arcade title.

Shoot the fooood!

This is a childhood favorite of mine…Bards Tale. As for Gauntlet, my brother took me to an arcade with his two friends and pulled out a handful of coins and we played Gauntlet 2 all day…each person lost a small fortune, but it was fantastic multiplayer experience.

Death Rally !!
oh hell yes! I loved this game as a kid. dammit, I'm gonna have to see if it works in dosbox.
Death Rally is now available even for Windows platforms, it's remake from Remedy software company - developers of the original DOS game. There isn't LAN support included in Windows version, but it's freeware. :)

I would have mentioned Crusader if I could get the damn things to work, but my cds are pretty tortured, i got it to work ONCE. It probably warrants a 2nd purchase.

I loved Crusader, it's the reason I used to use it as a user name..

looks kind of fallouty in it's views, but a more ttechnical obviously..
I wonder if it had any influence on it?

No Beneath a Steel Sky? Great adventure game.

true, also one of my fondest childhood memories. I actually played it not long ago in dosbox, but got stuck when I had to find a password or something in the manual. which I didn't have, and couldn't find anywhere online.

Walkthroughs. Check the walkthroughs.

like I said in a previous thread, crusader is such an obvious choice for a reboot, not that I want it to happen, but if the right people did it I could have fun with it. The controls are just hard to deal with nowadays.

anyone play it on playstation? how is it?

Sweet games. Good memories.

Same, still haven't completed the second one though. Actually got the Crusader Collection box leaning against my computer desk. :D

I'll also recommend "Fuzzy World of Space Golf" because it was the first DOS game I played. :D

Star Wars: TIE Fighter

The best space combat simulation. Period.*

Don't let the star wars brand fool you, it has everything a good game needs, outstanding music (not everything is from J.W.!), fitting storyline and excellent action and pacing.

And you get to play as the Imperials.
Crush the pitiful rebel terrorist alliance and restore peace and order to the galaxy! :)

Good memories... I still have the original floppy version with the Maarek Steele novel...

If you pick this up, I'd recommend a cheap joystick, with only the mouse you'll get insane fighting A-wings and other manouverable fighters.

*okay maybe FS2 is on par with this one.... But it is still the best SW game. :P

An amazingly brutal and beautiful cyberpunk action-adventure game that unfortunately never got the sequel we were promised.
So I tried this out. It was a pain in the ass to even start up, then it tells me I have to go through some complicated shit to start it up every time, but anyway...

Played for about 15-20 minutes and didn't get past the 3rd room or so. Holy GOD the combat is hard, even on easy mode. I guess my abilities aren't so fine-tuned with this kind of game compared to, say, FPS, even though I rather liked Resident Evil 1. Another thing, it's really puzzling trying to figure out what to do, and I wouldn't want to use a guide, that'd take the whole point of adventure away.

In no way am I saying it's a bad game, just a hard one (or as you said: brutal). It hasn't really aged that well in terms of gameplay mechanics. From what I saw, the story (walls and walls of text on Dane's Logbook) is all there, hell, it's an Origin game, would I expect any less?

As it's a total chore to start it up every time (I followed some guides and apparently I have to go through some install program every time I want to play it, can't use DOSBox shortcuts no-sir-ee), I can see this game taking more time than it should, so I guess I'll just give up on it.

Try using a good front-end like DOSShell. I use it, works great. Let's me play all these lovely games without having to actually deal with the DOS interface.

Hah, anyone remember/got psyched about/STILL hopeful about the planned multiplayer version that was in the works called Crusader: No Mercy?

nomercy.jpg

I'm following Jason Ely (one of the guys who worked on Crusader while at Origin... even has a character named after him if you can think back to No Remorse) and his MMORPGs. He developed an interesting one called Dransik (later bought out and now Ashen Empires, with which he has no part of), and a new one he's in the middle of making called Elderlands. A real throwback to old-school gaming in some senses

But oh yeah, DOS games... most of my favorites and recommendations have been mentioned already. If you're someone playing Daggerfall, I don't see a need to want more DOS games anyhow ;)

However - another big mention, even if it may not be playable if modern RTS games have been played...

I feel this thread has turned into (another) "nostalgic thread about the good-ol-days". So many good games, so many that will never be appreciated except by those who have experienced them already.

Great that you tried it :D , it's definitely not an easy game but at the time the gameplay /graphics / sound / atmosphere.. where unsurpassed IMO. There is a way to play it relatively easy through Dosbox. (I managed to replay it that way some years ago.) Will look into it and post it here.

The game is also pretty short so you could just finish it in a couple of hours (albeit with a guide)

(I can't remember if this is how I played the game but it should work)
