Recommend DOS Games Here!

"Originally developed on an Amiga 500 for the Commodore Amiga, Atari ST, Apple IIGS and MS-DOS platforms, the game was widely ported to other contemporary systems."

I can recommend every Bullfrog game dos or not . All of them are pure genius.

Some examples:

Magic Carpet: fly around on a magic carpet over a beautiful 3d world technically years ahead of its time.

Populous: You are a God, fighting against other gods in a celestial game of conquest..

Syndicate + Syndicate Wars: two sinister forces battling for world domination. The second one never gets old (for me)
Amazing engine (totally destructible environments!) Superb atmosphere (hearing those cyborgs breath still gives me the shills.
One of the best soundtracks I have ever heard.

Dungeon Keeper: It's good to be bad. Really, really good. One (two) of the best games ever created. I still play the second one at least once a year.

A shame Peter Molyneux seemed to have lost his gift :|

Oh man, I've heard a lot about these games, but never played them. I think it might be too late now, as the graphics do seem pretty ancient and I might not appreciate it anynmore... Maybe I'm just being a snob and should give it a go...

WOW!!! good news everyone, at least those that have a working copy of syndicate wars :D :D

I managed to found a site that has done a multi OS port of SW!!! you need the original CD then you install, it will even convert the music files,

http://swars.vexillium.org/#community

works fine, if you are running the game under windows 7, it does work, but I suggest creating a text file and rename the extension to bat, and put the following in it

taskkill /f /IM explorer.exe
C:\"Program Files (x86)\syndicate wars"\"swars.exe"
start explorer.exe

for the rainbow colour fix, (the file will work for any old game that has rainbow colours, you just need to edit line two to point to the full path to the exe (including the exe)

just tested and works fine, PS this isn't a copied game, the download files only includes the files you need to run under windows or the OS of your choose you still need to provide the game files, (from the disk, after which you don't need the disk to play the game,

happy days are here again :D :D :D

One of my favorite adventure games, the intro is still as haunting as it ever was.

Works perfectly with ScummVm.

Realms of the haunting, one of the first horror games i have played and i still find it somewhat creepy. And i honestly think it still looks pretty good graphically.

I'd reccomend 'Life And Death' and 'Life And Death II - The Brain'. If you didn't guess from the name, they are both medical sims. The graphics are real dated, but I have not come across a game like it since.

You play as a doctor. You have to diagnose the complaint (using tests), reccomend treatment (one of which could be a operation) then operate yourself. You can screw up real easy - and kill people. There is a medical lecture room which will teach you how to diagnose conditions, and how to operate.

The fun part has to be the operations - because you can play it three ways a) medieval surgery - blood, screams and corpses b) victorian surgery - what happens if I leave a metal clamp in somebody's stomach, then sew them up? or c) modern surgery - try to be competant.

It runs in DOSBox, either full screen or windowed. Both games can be DL'd for free at several abandonware websites.

Here is the list of best DOS games :

(1) Super Mario Bros. 3
(2) Super Mario Galaxy
(3) Grand Theft Auto IV
(4) Doom 2
(5) The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time
(6) World of Warcraft
(7) Tetris
(8) Duke Nukem 3D

Jumping on the reply bandwagon here, I personally love old dos games / 8bit games I have a heavy stash of emulators for my olde time kicks. but as far as dos goes:

The original Settlers (Aka serf city)
-I honestly don't know of any other game that has absorbed as much of my time as this, heck I probably have spent less time breathing.

Space Crusade
-Its not an absolute favourite of mine, but a 'quick go' ends up becoming a 2 hour slog of hardcore tactical mouse clicky fun

Syndicate Wars
-I also recommend this (if you can get it) its one of the 1st games I honestly fell in love with.

X-Wing/Tie-fighter GREAT games.

Lemmings for some menial chuckles

Sensible Soccer
-for an eye straining pixel driven football frenzy, I personally don't like football, or football games, but this one was actually fun.

Cannon Fodder.
-Mindless, Silly & just pure genius.

I'd go and do a more thorough search of my back catalogue of goodies, but its late and i'm about to hit the sack

Well, there probably was a DOS Tetris clone. It's what most programmers start with. :P

Heh, just imagine WoW in a 320x200 screen mode with 16 colors. Little sprites running with epics around a plane, yelling at each other, and still as boring as it is. :D That reminds me, there was a competition over at GameJolt for "demaking" games(indie games actually) like if they had hardware restrictions of older systems.
