Rosh on Fallout 3

Our forum readers are mostly well aware of the prevailing rumours about Bethesda's Fallout 3. This has so far been ommitted from our frontpage, but now former NMA admin Rosh summarizes rumours he has been posting on the forums for the past few months. Gathered from unnamed developers according to him, posted here without any official affirmation of truth from us:
If you liked F:POS and think Oblivion is TEH GRATEST THING EVAR, then Fallout 3 is the game for you. Same lack of attention to setting, story, background elements, why the game was made the way it was, that we've dealt with since Chuck Cuevas. Instead of being a P&P-styled CRPG, you can fully expect Morrowind with Guns, and even though Googie doesn't fit the setting quite right (was more "art deco in ruins"), F:POS' use of Googie was described to me as "... would be better than some of the concept art and assets already created for Fallout 3". Much of the shit simply doesn't fit, including some cheap scratch marks and rust brushing akin to FOT, and some stuff that better belongs in Blade Runner. Which was good, but is by no means near Fallout.

Again, as per Bethesda's crappy development, primary development is for the X-Box, with PC as an afterthought. And if you thought the inventory and general interface was bad for Oblivion... Think of what Nival did to the panels and other functionality of HoM&M for Heroes V, and you'll see nearly the same thing for Fallout 3. After all, a status pane like the bottom of Fallout "gets in way of seeing the action", as I've heard about excuses for removing it.

Unashamedly stupid RT combat that will make Bloodlines combat look like genuine CRPG gameplay (as if we could expect anything else from Bethesda as of recent), same kind of roam as Oblivion, except from what I saw and was told, it's FP combat when firearms are brought into play much like Bloodlines. In other words, they're giving Fallout a near Dark Messiah treatment that Might and Magic enjoyed, but with a lot less kicking, probably about the same writing quality, and with 90% more industry newbies on the team. From what I was told up to November, they were still having fun learning about how to script speech trees, as those were considered to be "extra" from the start.

"We will do what we do best" indeed. Freaky Pete has spoken no truer words.
Link: thread on the RPGCodex

Bethesda should just fucking step out and tell the people how it is going to be. It would just be easier for every-fucking-one.

I do believe it is going to be the way Rosh described. And I think Bethesda is just fucking afraid the reaction of the Fallout fanbase, when they tell the details what kind of dumbed-down piece of shit Fallout 3 is going to be. That's the same reason why they didn't reveal a shit about the newest Star Trek game to the Star Trek fan community.

Bethesda, please, stop lying or playing mute. Just announce the details so we can start crying and cutting ourselves.

Or praising you. (He he, not.)

I wonder do they even know at Bethesda that people around here are raving mad over Fallout 3. Checking Bethesda's site, they don't even have a forum and for a company that mainly capitalises from RPGs, having no contact with the community seems odd. Of course, have to remember that The Morrowind Series is pretty much a console series (right?)...

Jack; the Elder Scrolls Forum = the Bethesda forum. They have Fallout 3 threads on the general discussion forum there.

Mad Max rw; this post is nothing new, and was mostly posted for completion's sake. As far as I know, those are the only rumours pulsing around, so there's nothing additional left for me to post.

At last the debate has returned to NMA.
But imo the matter here isn't how to get a decent Fallout 3, the matter is a question of guilt because FO3 will suck - if Roshambo's infos are correct. I fear they are.
And if they are correct, it's ridiculous to assume, that a few weeks of late info can really make any difference. Bethesda will not change general marketing strategy because of the grumbling of a few hundred or thousand old fans - have a look at TES or StarTrek:Legacy and you will see, in which way Beth is handling old fan's requests and expectations.
A "Morrowind with guns" isn't much better than an "Oblivion with guns" - I'll buy none of them.

Get ready for the war. Right now we have no bases for argumentation, but a time is bound to come when we will have them, and it will be soon, according to Bethesda itself... Prepare for the war, it's one thing I can tell you. If we don't start countering their hype as soon as it starts, the series is doomed... even more than that what it is already.

Gosh, SHOCKER!

I'm sure the grass in the Wastelands will be well animated, though.

Even bad publicity is publicity. As long as you haven't played the game most people will not believe you - and then it's too late.
Do you see any results from complaining on Oblivion or StarTrek:Legacy ? I do not.
Bethesda's bad guys are bulldozing their way to console mainstream shit and will not look for your opinion.
Hype is possible with and without the help of NMA. The teenie xbox audience isn't among old Fallout fans - no one will hear you, and those who call Oblivion a great "RPG" will not hear you, too.
The better way is to fight for a good game - but I fear this fight has no chance, it's lost since Beth has bought the franchise.
So you can complain or fight all day - it's just a waste of time.
Let's say Fallout 3 will never be released - Beth is delivering some kind of postapocalyptic action shooter with a similar title.
You should begin to forget all about Fallout 3 and to look grumbling for alternative games.

'kay, have fun rolling over and dying, Taxacaria. Come back when you have something more constructive to say than "just give up"

I will wait until some actual info on the game is released... Then MAYBE I will forget about it, or MAYBE I will delusionally fight for the game to be changed or to people not to buy it.

Well. I'll have to agree with that one, unless not in those... "terms"? :D

Interesting observation i did is that Bethesda doesn't seem to undergo any noticeable evolution. They just go on producing the same shit. They are not interested in innovations, just riding on the wave of 3DActionXBoX$hit. I hope they will be fucked in future because they won't change their attitude towards game development.
Fallout3 should be the first step for them towards the dead bringing abyss and maybe we can push them a bit =)

I have a feeling that Beth is not going to take any risks to be innovative... They are just doing what they do best. ;)

The same old shit.

That was PRECISELY my point [:D]

Well, I've been seeing some pretty amazing things going on with the RTS genre right now..

Total Annhiliation was ressurected with a sequel - Supreme Commander.

Tiberian Sun now has Tiberium Wars.

But, Fallout 3.. I'm tired of talking about it already.. It's all we have to look forward to but I am already tired of hearing about how much it can suck and how much it will probably suck and all of that. I just feel like crawling underneath of a rock about it.

All we can do is wait and see. :(

Realism can prevent you from disappointment.
Ok - let's speak about your constructive ideas:
1) Let's hope for the best
2) Let's wait until we're officially informed by Bethesda
3) Perhaps there is a possibility that one of the devs will lurk, and then this guy will recognize the great wisdom of the old fans and the current developement will be rearranged to match our needs.
4) ???

You said, that it's to late to make greater changes in developement - ok, that's what I've (grumbling) accepted now.
I can understand that you're still hoping in some kind of cooperation with Beth, but broadcasting is only one-way communication - and the only effect I can see in the future is a door for Bethesda to abuse the fanbase for their pre release hype.
Example here is hunting for screenies etc. - Beth will be happy to hear of that. Remember STG. Free advertising for a crappy game - that is the risk you'll take by a policy of waiting and hoping.
And I remember the time before Oblivion's release - same old soup.
The only difference is that there have been many discussions with the devs before release - and many, many lies. The end product was far far away from any old fan's expectations, and all long discussions have been invain - nothing than a waste of time. It's not a shame to fail one time, but it's a shame not to learn from that.

Do you have serious doubts in Rosh's and VD's leaked quotes from different sources about Fallout 3? All I've heard from you is that these statements aren't official Bethesda statements - hm, I'm sure you'll get them soon after release. Considering your opinion that it's too late for major changes because of the developement progress, all you can do is to hope - and only in the case, if you're ignoring the leaked facts.
