Hmmm? That's not really my theory, or at least I haven't stated it as such, VDweller mentioned it recently. It's something I somewhat agree with yes, in as far as it doesn't cut any of the Fallout developers short. In the "fluke" spectrum, I'd label Planescape: Torment more as a fluke, considering what MCA produced since then, than I would Fallout, a game of which the main people showed considerable talent at cRPGs later in life.

It is a fluke inasfar as its circumstances, especially concerning PR, can not be recreated, and as such Bethesda couldn't make a "true" Fallout even if they were interested in trying (which I honestly don't think they are).

Hey, 4too, when are you going to do a "This is Fallout" editorial for us?

"[t]hey are not targeting the Fallout fans at all. If they were, they would be here now, talking to you, would they not? They already have a playable build, yet they didn't show anything to you. Ask yourself why."

How many game developers have ever let fans be a fairly direct influence of how the game plays out? Honestly how many games have ever been made where some fans could say "we made that happen!". To my knowledge none, but I am sure you guys will have a hurried reply to that. I am rather skeptical that Bethesda will not live up to the Fallout games.

What is the chance their developers are secretly watching these forums and more for good ideas? Picking up whatever they wish and taking things into consideration. Sure it would be nice for them to let us now or ask us what we think, but then again it would seem no company would have the obligation to do so somehow it might make them look bad or weak or as if they couldn't do a good job themselves... Who knows...

And as for the playable build... Surely they'd like to wait until its decent enough and has most if not all there is to feature in the game.... Maybe it will all be a big suprise and we won't be as pissed as we thought we would!!!! (what a shock that would be eh? :P)

Hurried? No, but it is a known fact that BIS studios had good fan interaction in which fan input could actually make a difference. We could rattle of a number of features edited on Tactics alone.

None. We're blacklisted by the company.

I'd be most pleased if this were the case.

Yeah, that must be why they completely listened to the fans of the series on their *own* series as well, instead of completely changing it.

Oh....wait.

What a bunch of bullshit. Fan interaction is good for *any* company unless they are trying to piss off the established fan-base.

If they have a playable build it's ridiculous that we haven't seen anything *at all* so far.

Actually, it doesn't prove that much at all. It's just the modus operandi of Bethesda, they did the same with Oblivion.

Now you could argue did they the same with Oblivion because they wanted to muffle Morrowind fans like they want to muffle of. That's nearly a moot point, though, either way it is standard practice not to let out information early in the design cycle.

Some are checking the place, that doesn't mean they will use any idea from here.

Who said anything about directly influencing games and telling developers what to do? I was talking about [openly] showing what they have and discussing their design ideas, which is what all companies do.

Not really. Beth started working on Oblivion in 2002. Two years later (Sep 2004) they released a 12-page article (with in-game shots) in Game Informer. That was 1.5 years before the release.

In comparison, Beth started working on FO3 in 2004. The game is rumored to be released in Q4 07 (EB Games) - Q1 2008 (other sources). Make your own conclusions.

In unrelated news, here is a funny thread:
http://www.elderscrolls.com/forums/index.php?showtopic=617006&hl=

I hope it will be like a futuristic oblvion but better. Imo turnbased combat is something that belongs in the past when we didnt have the technology we have today. The more things that can be done in real time the less stiff the game will feel.
Well that has never been what rpgs are about to me sorry. I like them to put me into another world and do that as realistically as possible making me feel like im really there.
I HOPE they do real time combat, real time combat would be more fun and realistic than turn based combat, and contrary to popular belief the goal of RPGs is NOT to be as boring and unrealistic as possible.

To be honest I HOPE Fallout 3 is "ruined", because the things Fallout fans claim would "ruin" it are all the steps RPGs must make in order to progress, this would only make them better. There are of course those who dissagree but that's the nature of life, progress sometimes requires that those who cannot keep up be left behind.

If you want turn based combat go play games like Civilization or Heros of Might and Magic that are actualy FUN with it. That's what I do.
Teh target audience.
