RPGs with awful endings *spoilers*

For NCR

It Wandered In From the Wastes
I'm not alone here when I say that some RPGs have pretty "disappointing" endings, some confusing endings and some down right bad ones. As the titles read: SPOILERS!

Since this game is relatively old, I won't bother to hide it. DIABLO has a rather disappointing ending. While I have not played the original completely, I do remember the end. The whole game was about you going to kill the king of evil, Diablo, and take his red jewel, which gives him power. After hours of play and grinding, you take on Diablo and kill him. What follows is a cutscene showing you becoming the new Diablo, who is the boss in Diablo 2. Really? C'mon, you just spended the whole game trying to kill the guy that you have just turned into! What a waste...

Diablo is a RPG?

I can't really think of one off the top of my head. Most Crap Endings were games with crap stories to begin with.

Like Final Fantasy 8.

Role: You take the role some fighter looking to kill Diablo

Playing: Well, you play and grind, like in every RPG from the 80-90's

Game: It's a fun game. (Or from what I remember.)

So now all games are RPGs.

It's definition agrees with you :look:

a game in which participants adopt the roles of imaginary characters in an adventure under the direction of a Game Master.

Jesus Christ, let's just agree that Diablo is a mixture of a Roguelike and Action RPG. And I was kinda fine with the ending in both Diablo and Diablo 2, even though I found it a bit stupid what Tyrael did at the end of DII.

I can't speak of any RPG where I really was pissed at the ending right now, but maybe I will remember some later on.

I know you're talking about end game cut scenes but I think its more diappointing when the end game boss fight is an anti-climax.

I remember Divine Divinity being a really fun game but by the end your character is basically an untouchable god. The end game dungeon and boss fight are a joke. The 1st dungeon in the game is probably the biggest challenge. 2nd biggest challenge is the walk from the 1st town to the inn.....

That said, I think its very hard for game designers to make the end game challenging while still making it feasible for people who don't build the perfect character to win.

I remember the 1st time I played Dark Sun (which I think is an underrated game overall), my party was flawed. But I didn't know it was flawed until the very last fight because I was able to beat everything else. Not fun to go through a whole game and then realize during the last fight that I needed another spell caster.

I guess its better to err on the side of making the game more beatable than it is to make it so that anyone who wastes a few skill points here or there can't reasonably expect to win the game.

But it is disappointing to spend all this time working towards accomplishing this "impossible" goal only to find out your character could have whipped the big bad boss over 5 levels ago.....

Mass Effect 3.

Yes it's an RPG, and yes the ending was horrible.

I disagree, and here is the reason:

Diablo was never about the story. It did have really good dialog, atmosphere, and decent lore, but don't expect much from a dungeon crawler.

Yes, I did. That was the point. Every hero you created fought the first one and later you faced off against him in Diablo 2.

It's about corruption of power and all that jazz.

@Makenshi: Indoctrination theory? Seriously? In order to make the ending good, we now need to pretend, with shaky evidence at best, that it only happened in Shepard's mind? It's wishful thinking. Denial.

I've followed Bioware since Baldur's Gate II. I like most of their games, love some of them. And they are absolutely not clever enough to have pulled this off, or have thought of it at all on their own. If this ends up being the explanation in the Extended Cut, I will be even more angry.

Why? Because beyond the horrid ''all just a dream'' thing, it solves nothing. The Reapers still exist. The war continues. Let's say Shepard breaks indoctrination. Now what? Harbinger and crew are gonna turn back in dissapointment? Earth is gonna fix itself?

I played this series of game in order to see this conflict end. Ever since Sovereign spoke to us, we knew something like this final, dramatic showdown would occur. And if this series ends with anything less than a thorough resolution of said conflict, I will be very dissapointed. I did not play Mass Effect to be told it was all just a dream, or that in the end my choices do not matter at all because of stupid Diabolicus Ex Machinas.

Sorry for the rant. But this video opens a wound that has not yet grown old. Fan-wank does NOT a good ending make. Never. Hope you were not serious.
