I am pretty sure if the Russian military actually succeeded in capturing and holding Kiev while maintaining momentum, as was their original plan before it became a disaster for them, Ukraine would have most likely capitulated. Honestly I expected a very short conflict with Ukraine falling, when the Russians started their offensive and it was really pretty surprising to see them being so ineffective and the Ukrainian forces not only holding but actually pushing the Russian invasion back from Kiev.

Who said capturing Kiev was their plan ? Did Russia really go all out to attack Kiev ? Why did the heavy armour column not move for days and days.
If the need had arisen Putin could have told Zelensky to surrender, get out of town within 24 hours as George W had warned Sadman Insane.
If no action was taken, high level carpet bombing, missile attacks then a tank rush to mop up.
Western media wanted this to happen, obviously Russia did not.

Uh? By sending a large number of their forces to actually CAPTURE Kiev rather than doing what they are doing now, securing eastern Ukraine? Also, Putin made it very clear right from the begining that his goal was to get a "regime change" in Ukraine. Kinda difficult to achieve that without capturing the capital city.
Now I am not claiming to know EVERY detail of their military master plan they obviously had in the begining - which imploded in an incredibly spectacular and humilating fashion. But it's pretty obvious that Putin and his goons aimed at a very quick overthrow of ALL of Ukraine. Not just the Donbas region.
Don't tell me you're one of those people that blieve their attack on Kiev was just one big giant blunder or something.

I can only specualte of course. But my feeling is that Putin, probably because he has a too small dick, wanted what the US did in Iraq and Afghanistan. Overthrowing a nation in 24 hours or something. Showing off all military power there is. With tanks and infantry units marching trough the Ukraine showing how they "liberated" the country. Cuz RUSSIA STRONK! PUTIN STRONK! And all that. To show to the world and himself, what great military nation he leads. And I would not be surprised if Putin actually believed his own propaganda at this point. Where the people around him, everyone a yes-man, told him what he wanted to hear. That Ukraine is an easy target. That the Russian military is unbeatable. That it can wage a very mobile and modern war, just like the United States. And then a lot of people with even biger Egos thought they could make their mark.
I mean consider this. What they apparantly found with russian soldiers which attacked Kiev was parade uniforms. Can you imagine that? You don't carry parad uniforms with you into combat. Unless you expect a very quick victory with a nice little parade in the capital of your enemy.
It also explains many other rather strange decisions. Like sending in elite formations of the VDV without support to capture the air field in Kiev. A totall military dissaster. Someone at a higher position must have felt left out or thought, this could be a good moment let "his" troops shine for political gains at home. It is very much possible that this whole "Special Operation" was at the begining not lead by military experts and professionals, but the political apparatus around Putin. Like as if, I don't know, not the Pentagon would actually lead in battle, but Peolici or Mitch McConnell. And it would just as well lead to dissaster.

The whole Russian leadership made it clear that Ukraine is not a "sovereign country" (with history as explanation) and that they see it as a part of Russia, that they started their "Special Operation" to clean it from a nazi-american-what-ever-controlled puppet regime. And there are many - no not just Fox news - informations which tell us that the Russian leadership actually and genuely believed the majority of the Ukrainian population would welcome them as liberators and not as what they actually are. A foreign invading enemy force.
And I am not an illiterate mongolid. I understand and know about the historical relation between Ukraine and Russia and how complicated it makes everything where particularly east Ukraine has a very strong positive view or Russia. One could even argue that East Ukraine is more Russian than Ukraine. Albeit it's as I said, very complicated. And it is not a justification for any military or political intervention by Russia.
