So what lore has Bethesda done gone fucked up?

Fallout 1, 2 and NV took place in relatively arid areas. Those are the only games I'd consider mostly canon.

Ugh... You do know what the definition of "canon" is, right?

From Wikipedia; "In fiction, canon is the material accepted as officially part of the story in an individual universe of that story." I don't care what your opinion is on BethSoft or their games, but Fallout 3 is, without a doubt, canon. In your fanon, it may not be, but that's not what canon is.

As much as I'd like to see F3 stricken from the record, it's here to stay. You have to include it into canon because you don't get to decide what is and isn't canon. Whoever owns the IP gets to decide and, despite how shitty it is, Bethesda is the owner.

"Bethesda decides what's canon." Every time I say that, a little bit of me dies inside.

Hear, hear! While it's a fucking shame, it's true. We don't decide the fate of Fallout, but we can keep campaigning for better RPGs.

They can say and do what they want, but since all they do is butcher the lore with every release, nothing they say or do will ever be canon in my eyes. Call it fanon or canon or whatever, I don't care.

It's Fanon, because you're fan and you make your own canon.

When I think about it, to me fallout Tactics is actually a better Fallout game than F3 and F4... And it's not even meant to be a proper RPG...

I consider Bethesda to incompetent to decide what is canon and what isn't and will take it upon myself to declare what 'I' consider to be canon. To me, there is no "official canon" any longer. You see my take as being "fanon" then that's all right, consider it that at your leisure. But I refuse to acknowledge the merits of Bethesda's take on the franchise. If they smeared shit on a wall and called it Fallout according to you we'd have to accept it as official canon. You can accept that, I won't. Acknowledging what Bethesda produces as "official canon" is an insult to the franchise IMO.

Because Bethesda's done gone fucked it up so much to me there isn't anyonethat can say what is truly officially canon any longer. Not InXile, cause they haven't worked on a game since what? Fallout 2? Not Obsidian, cause they only got to do one game and they don't have the rights to the franchise. Not Bethesda, cause they're being Bethesda. Not Interplay, because of their own fuck-ups in the past. There is no "official canon" any more to me. There is only what we as fans of the series chooses to accept.

And I ain't accepting FO3 and FO4.

Call it fanon all you like, bring up the definition all you like.
I'll still keep on claiming that FO3/4 ain't canon.
Regardless of how arrogant that makes me sound.

[edit]

Hell, if we're gonna go into definitions then take a look at the word "official". All ya'll need to do is make me an official of NMA and I can go around authorizing the shit outta stuff, cause I already got myself an office.

Canon as a term is loose all on its own. If someone gets the IP and decides to change the lore again, THAT would become canon. Therefore, it's a term that denotes a state that lacks consistency. I personally don't take it too seriously. What is vague can be assumed by fans. What's done badly will probably be changed again, because even Bethesda doesn't have the self-confidence to stick with their bad decisions. Just look at the BoS or their super mutants.

Just Fanon the hell out of Fallout. It's all we've got left.

As for other mentions like pre-war Jet and Advanced PAs in the East Coast - they're quite clearly "randomised", and not connected to the lore.

There's mention of Jet being part of a drug shipment to a Vault in a pre-war terminal entry.

Unless the drugs mentioned in that terminal are randomised in every game(I would hope that's the case, but then even if it was, Jet shouldn't be on that list regardless), it's definitely a fuck up.

Hm. I'm pretty confident the terminal list wasn't randomised, in which case, it was probably a writing oversight or a lack of consistency.

Holy moly people are still butthurt about that Jet business? It's literally the most insignificant retcon that could happen ever

Um... No. There was an entire plot about the guy who invented Jet. I guess when the ending mentioned that history forgot about him, Bethesda took it literally.

"I'll still keep claiming that FO4/3 aint canon."

And youll keep right on being offically wrong and proving what a dellusional manchild you are. ;-)

On the whole "Bethesda decides what's canon" vs "I decide what's canon" thing, I think it's important to note that Obsidian and Bethesda did something very deliberate with their games. They set them on different coasts.

Bethesda have pretty much come right out and said that they're sticking to their coast, and letting Interplay/Obsidian do what they want with the West Coast. If that doesn't seem like an official statement of "You can stick to whatever canon you prefer, or both" I don't know what is.

That is a really interesting idea, I'm not sure it's true, as we don't know if Obsidian, or, anyone else really, will get the chance to make it, but, damn, kinda leaves hope for the future, eh?

As far as the jet goes, yeah.....that was a major plot arc of FO2. I don't think calling that a retcon, and saying it adds nothing to the story, has anythingto do with being a "man-child', or 'whining', though....maybe butt hurt by the most typical use of the phrase might apply, but then I suppose you had better never, ever, disagree with a thing a company does then, lest you be 'butt hurt', and your opnion unworthy of consideration.

Certainly, it wasn't the most 'literally insignificant retcon ever'.
