Starcraft 2 - It is out there

We all know it's bullshit, one of the first public relations moves when it comes to outrage over outed features is the declaration that they are 'obsolete' or 'outdated'.

We all know it's horseshit, it's just funny that they think we'll believe it.
Don't insult me, Blizzard, babe, don't insult me.

Evidently they haven't looked in Korea's direction for some time if they think Lan is a fossil, maybe all those large scale gaming tournaments all over the world that are done through Lan passed under the radar as well.
I think all that money may be obscuring their view of the real world.

4. WoW WoTLK is turning into a total noobfest according to what I hear from friends that do play it.
WoW has always been a garbage game with a garbage community (I know because I was there at the beginning [not beta but I'm not counting that] and, from what I can tell, things haven't improved). It may be that more of the cool and simply not stupid people are finally quitting or it could just be that you're friends are finally realizing what the game truly is. Besides which, people always complain about online communities and since the summer that never ended began, it's really only been going downhill. Also online communities tend to get worse and worse new blood as their popularity and player base grow, I saw it to a lesser degree with StarCraft and D2, clearly with CS over the many years I played it, and undeniably with Gunbound, which devolved extremely quickly (for which Brazilians take the bulk of the heat).

There are some folks who will believe it but since LAN is an established thing which enough gamers use, more will react unfavorably to it. The people who I think are going to be the most angry are competitive players, if playing with the person in the same room as you has lag then b.net 2.0 games will have a smaller competitive community than they otherwise would. I'm hoping that they change their mind at some point and if the competitive community's reaction is negative enough, they may change it in one of their expansions.

Where have people read about the pay features of b.net 2.0? I couldn't find an article about it but I will say that if b.net has a subscription fee then I won't be buying Blizzard games until it vaporizes.

I can't wait for my toaster to have to be connected to the internet before it will cook me some toast.

Trust me, the day bread becomes self-aware, we're all screwed.

Unless you all switch to rice.

Any internet community where the majority are in the 14-18 category is always going to be terrible.

I have to say... I really don't like the Helions. Flame-throwing RC-looking cars? Just no.

Otherwise, looking awesome.

Ugh I just watched this (seen here without commercials: http://www.starcraft2.com/features/battlereports/4.xml) and was quite impressed... I wanna play.

It seems the natural strength over the Zerg and Terran that the Protoss used to enjoy does not exist? Good match though, I can't wait to play... I will be extremely disappointed if Blizzard still opts for the multiple race expansion pack though.

ok, can the camera not zoom out or something?

that just seems like horribly simplistic play compared to other RTSes

the more i see, the less i want SC2

you have a picture of a cute Azn girl yet deny SC2.

How many rts's have you played? SC is the most famous and voted best one of all time. I can think of no other that comes close by a 1/10 the popularity and certainly not the longevity.

SC is a game like chess. There are no strange variations. Balance is really ballanced. It is a standarized style vs mixed style of standarized and imbalance like the command and conquer series. No one would care about SC2's graphics if the game was perfectly balanced and challenging. Things like camera angles dont apply to such a game. WCIII was a pedestrian, fantasy spinoff on the style. It is fun, but is not a chess-like game at all.

I don't usually freak out too much over games these days but Blizzard has managed to up the customization and power of their editor (which now appears to be a full blown SDK). The StarCraft 2 editor appears to be a monster from the youtube videos I've seen of it, allowing for people to transform the game into a: top down shooter, 2-D side scroller, third-person shooter, third-person flight shooter, tetris, character generation screen, and I'm sure more elsewhere. I always loved the use map settings games so this bump is more than welcome for me. If only Blizzard weren't bastards and releasing the game in three parts :(

Lucky bastard. Yeah, I watched a video about their plans for a marketplace and I have to say that I'm concerned. They talked about allowing people to charge for maps and use the dreaded term, premium maps. They talk about thinking it's more for "maps" which are full modifications rather than for stuff like DotA, but I'm still worried because I don't see it happening. He mentioned that maps can be protected but we'll see how well that works, I'm guessing it'll be cracked pretty quick, and it's better for your mod community if they can explore what other modders did in the editor (great way to learn). It also reduces the value of the product (which will already be extremely expensive as it's being sold in three parts) for the customer since they will have to pay for a lot of maps/mods (we'll see how much it catches on).

All in all it feels like an easy money grab ("a portion of what you pay goes to the map developers") rather than something entirely meant to help the end user. He compared it to the iPhone store which further increases my distaste for it and amusingly had Counter Strike and Day of Defeat on his slide where he talked about allowing creators to charge causing there to be better mods and such, ignoring the fact that both were entirely free until Valve bought the IPs from the modders and created sequels which they sold.

I hear a lot of good news, bad news whenever I look into what Blizzard is doing.

If that's meant to imply that you'd like a beta key as well, I might be able to acquire one (I know a guy who should have a couple of those leftover).

SC1 was a game and an expansion over the course of 8 months.
SC2 will be a game and two expansions over the course of 36 months (assuming there are no delays).

Thinking in the long term, that doesn't seem all that horrible a value proposition to me.
