Students of Fallout

What really makes me happy is to think about that bunch of guys playing Fallout and having their lives changed forever because of it. What other game can do that? Lots of them, that's for sure, but no crappy actiony fps can do that.

Hopefully they've had their standards raised, and will look a bit more closely at the games they play.

Absolutely. I actually LOVED Oblivion, so it's natural I would feel the same for FO3 :)

You should really think of signing in for his classes, maybe you will understand then the difference between a good rpg and a action game with rpg elements.

Are you implying that Action RPGs are bad games?

To me, it's ridiculous to try to combine too elements that are so at odds to each other.

Especially when they concentrate so much on the action portions, to appeal to the MCD, as it appears FO3 has done.

He actually said "action game with rpg elements", not "Action RPGs".

Everyone has an opinion.

I've got mine, and you've got yours.

Mine just happens to be correct.

:)
Quit shooting your e-peen's jizz everywhere.

Anyway, what an interesting class. I wish I took courses like that. Damn, I hate my life.

So Mass Effect was a bad game? Please elaborate. I'm interested to hear your guys' argument for this.

Well, Fallout 3 is definitely NOT an action game with RPG elements. It is a true RPG, but it uses real combat. I fail to see what's so wrong with that.

How about you hear mine? Dialogue was way overhyped. It all amounted to pretty much the same thing, even if you are an asshole or a nice guy. The side quests were boring as fuck. They were all copypasted missions that required you to kill X amount of enemy. All non-weapon skills were fucking worthless.

Can I continue, or are you satisfied?

I love the fact that the 'students' suddenly underwent an epiphany of "OMG this game is more than just sexy graphics spludged over a weak and uninteresting game engine" its like once they sat down to really play they found that silly things (e.g the 'im hunting wabbits' bit) went a long way, and the fact that as a player they all learnt how to interact with the strangeness of the new virtual world into which they stepped and were happy to have done so, shows me that not all modern gamers are happy to have games that you press a combination of WASD and click the left mouse button until such time as you are rewarded with a large explosion (or a weak imitation of a bullet-time sequence)

Thank heavens some gamers still like their brains.

I think this is a point we'll just have to agree to disagree.

There's much more to an RPG than combat.

What RPGs have you played?

Hey, I love games and all, and consider myself a hardcore gamer, but...aren't we taking this a LITTLE too far? Games are supposed to be fun, amirite? Not about how smart you can prove yourself to be. They are supposed to ENTERTAIN you, and if it's a simple type of game that does that, then what's the problem?

They are an unexpected mix of gamers: a small handful of RPG veterans, a large majority of relatively casual gamers (mostly sports games and shooters), and a few with almost no experience playing video games at all

This is precisely why I think the gaming industry shouldn't adhere to all this hand-holding trends. Most gamers do want to be challenged, they're just not used to it anymore due to the suits' perception of the market and its expectations which leads to quest compasses and vita chambers alike.

Also an interesting read is that blog he linked to - Fallout as seen through the eyes of a jRPG fan. Seems to me that the non-linear narrative was his primary problem, which makes a lot of sense seeing as the guy was used to mostly story-driven games.

Well,(keep in mind I'm only 15) my favorite RPG's over the last few years have been:

1.Dragon Quest VIII
2.Oblvion
3.Mass Effect
4.Tales of Vesperia
5.Final Fantasy Tactics Advance

Some people prefer more than having to play a twitch game, where actual tactics are involved. From what I've seen, VATS is a slapped on attempt to provide tactics to essentially an FPS.

It is a true RPG

In "true" RPGs only your character's statistics and skills matter, for example in combat.

ummm....combat in Fallout 3 is effected by your stats. I have read many times that, even when in first person.

How did you miss the "only" word? Thing is, stats and skills affect combat in FO3 (less than more from what I've read) but it's still possible to beat the crap out of things if you're good at circle strafing, bunny jumping and placing headshots on enemies.
And beating the crap out of things with a character with miserable stats and skills isn't possible in a "true" RPG.

I agree with you. I love playing a good, intelligent game as much as you guys do, but if someone doesn't prefer that type of genre, I don't think we should insult their intelligence because of it. BTW, I'm not pointing at any specific person, just saying in general.
