Summer plans

Hehe, that picture reminds me of Bruges (Jebus' hometown) and Ghent (the city where I live). Cities like that are like little Disney Worlds for Americans, I suppose. It's like you travelled through time and ended up in the Middle Ages or something. I don't like it, actually, but hey: that's probably because I live in one of those cities.

It doesn't beat Venice, y'know

Yep. Brugge pwnz Gent three times a day though.

Some examples:

Basically, Brugge is what Gent could've been if time had stood still there too (meaning: economical crisis from about 1550-1850); and if they would take care of their monuments better...

That isn't Venice! That's one of those islands near Venice - can't think of the name though.

Anyway, I'm preparing a Brugge vs. Venice match as we speak :P

Venice is just way too kitch and baroque. And those ugly pastel-colors might one day cost you your sight...

Dude if you think Brugge is in any way even nearly a match for Venice you are severely delusioning yourself

If I'm not mistaken, Brugge has cars. Venice, generally, doesn't. That's why Venice beats everyone, easy.

Hà! As o_s_a_m_a would say:

I will fight ANYONE who says Venice is better than Brugge!

(And Brugge doesn't have cars on most of its historical sites; AND the main reason there aren't cars in Venice is simply because they would fit in there [literally-the streets are to narrow; and the narrow Venician streets are another ugly thing IMHO])

Kharn, that first "venice" image is the most disgusting, kitsch, painting I've seen in a long time. Thank you.

Vs. one of my best friends homes....Manarola, in the Cinque Terre in Italy. His goes to live with his dad (who runs a restaurant there)every summer, and that's where I'm going next year!

You win, King. Although Venice is a miraculous place. And a great metaphor for decay.

Oh, and Jebus: it's easy to let Bruges win if the pictures of the other cities are showing the least interesting places. I mean, you can see Bruges in an hour (half an hour will do as well  ). Try doing that in Ghent or Venice...

Oi! Italia!

I have to admit, all these pictures are making me miss Europe.

Montez, Annecy is in the French Alps, nestled against the Mont Blanc and close to Geneva. Expensive neighborhood, but nice.

I have never had problems as a tourist there and have always enjoyed myself.

Travel!
I am looking forward to Montreal, but I really want to see-

Yosemite (Hiked to the top of that one about 10 years ago).

But I'd like to cross-

The Grand Canyon.

Christmas I am taking my wife home to-

The lack of cars in Venice was one of the thing I enjoyed best. Wonderful city.

Brugge is way too Belgian to compete

Well, I get to go to Montreal for a conference in July, so that'll be fun.

Other than that, my summer will be one long lab experiment. Plan is to get a paper out the door by August, then pass my candidacy exams before classes start again.

:help:

That's not very fair now, isn't it! I mean, I pitched the Piazza San Marco against the Jan-Van-Eyck Plein (a little square hidden somewhere in Brugge); and the Gran Canal against the Minnewaterpark...

Brugge is just way prettier, face it yo!

No really; I think it's all just a matter of taste. I didn't like most of Venice, simply because it's, according to me, way to kitch and colory.
Brugge, on the contrary, had a bit of a 'sad' look over it. Bruges la Morte...
I think it's cool to see how a city that was obviously very rich in the middel ages kind of... Stopped evolving when they lost their economical position in NW-Europe.

There's a lot more to Brugge than those places swarming with Japanese.

Maybe I could show you around some day! I've led a few friends of mine around the city already.

Who knows? Perhaps there is more to me than meets the eye!

Hehe...

And shouldn't that pic from the Clockwork Orange be accompagnied by a pic of some big boobies? ;)

@ El Prez: seems like you're going on a cultural holiday! Have fun!

I'm working, going to the Outer Banks of NC and maybe slipping off to the Adirondaks for some fun with friends.
And of course, planning my Christmas getaway for next year--Patmos! I love the Greek isles...
