Muff

Water Chip? Been There, Done That
Syria has just pissed off Turkey.

Syria has claimed to have shot down a Turkish fighter jet flying over Syrian Territorial waters. It's claimed that it was a F-4 Phantom and their is a search currently underway for the two pilots in the Mediterranean, as it was supposedly shot down over the Latakia province and it was apparently engaged while it was doing map of the earth (low and fast).

Turkey has already said it's response would be Decisive once all the fact's are clear. There is already a dispute ongoing regarding the Syria crisis over the thousands of refugees crossing the border due to the current crisis in Syria.

I can't help but to remember Bush "aligning" Syria to the "axis of evil" (Which according to one definition also includes Libya, which is now "properly dealt with")

I am basically going to predict a full scale invasion in Syria, at some point, when we're all done pretending to show restraint, and maybe for China to give a green light or something.
It's looking very predictable.
Maybe I'm cynical :I

An attack on Turkey is an attack on Nato, so...

I wonder if Turkey will let our jets come through this time if they need help?

The 2 pilots are unhurt, supposedly.

There will be some saber rattlin' & Syria will end up paying a huge "fine". Other than that, I don't see much happening. NATO isn't going to invade a country over a fighter getting shot down by mistake.

The truth is, we have nothing to gain in Syria.

Haven't Turkey made a point of violating Greek airspace on a regular basis? They're like a bully who gets away with picking on one kid for a long time, picks on another thinking it will work the same and gets punched in the face.

well if the turkish pilots violated the syrian border ... well. Surprised that their planes are shot down?

This. Turkey has a bad reputation when it comes to respecting other countries' territory. In a number of ways.

Finally someone who sees reason...

As bad as they may be, their air space was violated, so they shot. You can't use it as an "zomg they shot me, gotta invade them" excuse.

Israel did more by jacking their boats heading to gaza and they had to shut up about it.

It's a throw back to the Ottoman Empire, when people feared their swords and their lambie breath.

*shrugs* well I am not defending syria here. Its not like they HAVE to shoot just because there was a violation of their air space. There are many ways how to respond to that without sending rockets for them. This of course only if they never warned them or told them that they are in the wrong place. You should give people at least time to leave. But I dont know the full story here. Who knows what happend really anyway. Everyone has his own version of the story.

Still. I don't see Turkey as the victim here either because I think if there are tensions between the two nations the last you should do is to let planes flying around the border if there is no need for it.

It reminds me to the same situations during the cold war where the US lost quite a lot of planes flying from turkey in to the Soviet Union. For what ever reason. And in those cases the Soviets gunned those planes down.

As said. If you know there are tensions you have to accept the possibility of your planes getting shoot down.

For this particular case. Both nations are idiots in my eyes.

And I doubt there will be really a war. What has turkey to gain from it? It is unlikely that they would get any support from the NATO, not as long Syria isnt attacking with full force but I doub they are that dumb. There will be a bit of rattling now, so everyone can keep his face. Some politicians will ramble much, the generals get their typical hard ons. And that was it. - Or lets hope it will not be more then that. Turkey has an impressive force. No doubts about that. But going in to war without support is a different story. And I doubt the NATO would go with Turkey in this matter. Not for Syria. Not for 2 military jets where no one really knows what happend. This isnt 9.11.

Its essentially the same that happened during the Cold War when the Soviet Union shot down a U.S. U-2 Spy Plane. Syria shot it down because it was in THEIR airspace. Which is justifiable. Everything is going to hit the fan soon.

We have to remember that this isn't The Ordinary Case of Airspace Violation

This is a country that has been tempting NATO to invade it for weeks now, long since topping Libya's violence against protesters etc, long since exceeding what prompted NATO to intervene there.

That's why this may be more "ominous" a sign than it would usually be.

I'd be much more surprised if this quietly dies down, than if it flares up and gets worse.

(The Cold War analogy right above me there is close to truth, precisely since this situation is so "flammable" allready. Violated airspace ending in violent action is serious enough - more than enough to cut diplomatic ties and such)
