The end of Fallout3...again

Hello, guys. Seems it is time to come out. I've been lurking here for some time too. Not long - two or three weeks... But that was enough for me to start believing in FO3. A dream that I used to dream couple years ago but there wasn't any evidence of FO3 being developed so I forgot about it for some time. And now - when I read all those great post by JE, Puuk, Brisarieus, now - when I the game was half ready and I already looked forward to holding it in my hands - now Interplay ruined all!
This day was very sad indeed. Most guys from russian fallout community (it is where I came from) feel just same as you guys do here. But I still have a slight hope that FO3 will be finished somehow - by Troika|Obsidian|someoneelse.

Also want to thank Briosafreak and all nma community for nice job you did here. Your news and discussions kept me well-informed. It was real fun starting each day with new details from coming VB.

So that's it.

Good luck to you all.

fallout 3... cancelled? But... why? I wanted that game! Is this an april fools joke or something? Well, see if i buy an interplay product... if they ever release another one. BG:DA was looking pretty good but why should i support a company that doesn't support me? Sigh, there goes my anticipated game of all time. Guess its back to fallout 1 + 2.

Sorry lilfyffedawg, we are all still in shock, i`m really sorry...

And thanks Walrus

" yaawn. work done, let's see what's up at NMA"

Arrrghhh

fuck. I really hoped this wouldn't happen. seriously, if i lived somewhere near the anus snort company's offices, i'd do something nasty and stupid, like breaking their windows with a slingshot and a ton of marbles. Or throw a molotov through the window at night.

yeah yeah, label me a violent radical or whatever you're thinking, i couldn't care less. Would it bring back Van Buren? Would Interplay suddenly realize to continue the game?
Fuck no, but it would make me feel better.

I'm trying to canvas the forums.

A lot of people seem to think that BIS was canned because they haven't produced anything since IcewindDale2 and FOBOS1&2 would be cheaper to produce than F3 and F3 is based on some new technology that is costing to much to produce and other such crap.

Need to spread word... help kill Interplay in only way I can...

I HATE INTERPLAY WITH ALL MY HEART AND SOUL

FUCK YOU INTERPLAY!!!!!!

I can't believe they could do something like this! :(

I still remember a few years ago, sitting in my school homeroom, going to NMA as I usually did and seeing the headline...the joy I felt first hearing about Van Buren.

I'm still in complete and utter shock.

I don't know what those God damn executives were smoking when they made such a decision. I hope it seels their fate and the company dies as it deserves.

I wish the best of luck to the former BIS team! I already am putting a little tribute to them in an easter egg for Wastes United as we speak (as well as a few comments on iplay for the credit quotes  ).

They don't know what they had.
I hope Fallout RPG don't RIP, though the chances are that no one will disturb its rest.

The folks at BIS knew how to create immersion and atmosphere. That's what creates addiction and apetite for more.

I think the anticipation for a FO sequel was greater than they can gather from the sales figure. A game like FO grows a community over time as more and more discover its depth, and it took at least me a while to discover the series. I think that is the case for many others as well.

The average gamer is getting older and older, and this sort of game will only get more and more popular as this process continues. Yes, there are many console gamers out there now, and Fallout RPGs have a learning curve (which incidently is a characteristic that IPLAY shuns). If they don't have the brainpower, then they are good riddens. Too bad the series franchise to which we are devoted as well as a half completed Van Buren is now under lock and care from these people until someone pays for it which will most likely never happen.

Anyone think that JE Sawyer's departure from interplay had anything to do with this? Maybe he knew fallout 3 was gonna get canned and decided he was fed up with interplay.

I think it's pretty much confirmed that he left because of the way Interplay treated the project, such as pulling away needed personel to work on PhoBoZ instead.

bingo. But in the way the project was treated, I think JE must have felt that the game wasn't going to be finished. In fact, with the people they had, they could not have finished it.

I'm among the flock who signed up to bitch, I suppose. 'Cept that i was all slow about it because I avoid forums like the plague. It seems like only yesterday that they were making Fallout 1, Stonekeep, Descent...
Anyone up for compiling a list of Interplay PC hits to juxtapose with one of their console bomb-outs? I seem to remember the name meaning something to me about ten years ago. It seems to me that swearing and name-calling isn't going to get anything done but make them glad they're rid of our audience. Not that they don't deserve it.

Yet another lurker stumbling out of anonymity. its amazing how many of us there are. God, this blows. I'm still too shocked to speak coherently. I've been lurking for a very long time and have always appreciated NMA, DAC and others for there candor and hard investigative work for our benefit. Kudos.

I'd just like to thank all you lurkers for stepping up and speaking your mind, it's really appriciated. And I know the Bis guys appriciate this!

Well if it is indeed time for Lurkers to step out of the shadows and express their outrage then COUNT ME IN!!!

Am I surprised at Interplay pulling the plug? No.

Am I surprised that they think that it makes good long term business sense to appeal to the lowest common gameplaying denominator by putting all their eggs in the console basket? No.

Am I glad that their single basket full of eggs is eventually going to go rotten and stink worse than the fetid breath of of Interplay's Board of Directors (a result of too much time spent talking out of their a$$es)? You betcha.

I have been working in business Admin now for long enough to realise that your chances of turning a company around simply by cost cutting, laying off talented, hard-working and creative staff and "playing it safe all the way" are not good at the best of times, and certainly not when you are involved in a business as cutthroat and unforgiving as game development. Unfortunately, Interplay would seem to have as much chance of fighting back by maintaining their investment in "risky" but ultimately groundbreaking projects like Van Buren and Jefferson, as "Babe" has of celebrating his latest sheepdog trial win with a nice bacon sandwich...

Seriously, guys, it broke my heart when I heard what happened... I have been lurking around the NMA boards for a few months now and I had overcome my initial scepticism and really started to believe that Van Buren was going to happen. My very best wishes go to all at BIS, and your families, and although it will be hollow comfort at the moment I hope that eventually you will take some consolation from the knowledge that you have a lot of supporters out here.

I guess I might as well say something on my behalf, since I too was looking forward this game. I never allowed myself to become excited, though, knowing this could happen.

Nevertheless I am extremely disappointed and angry that what I feared became reality. More than that, though, I am sorry for the BIS team who got laid off just before christmas as thanks for their hard work. I hope everyone will find a new and better job soon.

As for Interplay, there is only one thing I am expecting from them now. Declaration of bankruptcy. The sooner the better.
