Tonto? Yeah, maybe that's better than a tanto, because tantos suck.

No. As a slashing weapon the tanto is pretty much the ultimate short blade configuration in my view. Used properly, it will slice through heavy clothing with ease thanks to the amount of force that can be exerted through the angle in the blade.

It was primarily designed for armor piercing but that's pretty much redundant these days with various spear-point double-edged configurations performing better for stabbing purposes, but it's still quite formidable in that respect as well.

Not a good choice for survival/utility knife. It's a weapon first and foremost.

You're generalising. A small subsection of tantos were designed for armor piercing. The classic tantos however never had that as a specific goal. They were general self-defense weapons.

Also, the modern "western" view of what a tanto looks like is wrong. What we call tanto knives = fubar.

Just sayin'.

True, but while there's a whole slew of tanto variations in historic Japanese manufacture we're talking primarily of the "americanized" tanto blades, correct?

Those can mostly be traced back to the original Cold Steel model, which is today incarnated in the Master Tanto 13BN and most blade configurations on the market today pretty much adhere to it. What I said previously about characteristics of this design most definitely hold true - the blade tip does have armor-piercing qualities in that it is very thick and strong, and the angle in the blade gives additional bite to slashing action.

That said, having googled for some other manufacturer's "tanto" images I can see what you mean by fubar:

Drop point tanto? Great way to weaken the tip.
Drop point with faux upper edge? Same only worse.
Elongated tip? This is better than standard drop point how?
Serrated tanto? As if not enough of the usable cutting edge wasn't already sacrificed to create the triangular tip, now you have to shorten it further with that crap?

Yeah, most of these are useless.

Anybody got a pic of a 308. and a 7.62 nato next to eachother. I've been trying to find one to no luck.

.308 winchester? Why don't you just get a picture of .308 winchester and a 7.62NATO and put them next to each other. Or into the same picture. Or just a picture of two catridges of 7.62NATO or .308? Since, y'know, they're pr. much the same.

Thats what I am trying to prove but some people just don't believe me.

Thats why I wanted a pic with both of them.

Point them in the direction of anything explaining the cartridge dimensions.

The difference would be barely visible, if at all...

Have this instead. (7.62x51mm NATO = mil, .308Win = com)

308vs762x51.jpg

And yes, any .308Win firearm will shoot 7.62x51mm NATO, but not every 7.62x51mm NATO will shoot .308Win safely!

Not bad, some of those are pr. good photos. I don't care much for the ones of just lower/upper and the flag/guy holding the star. The first shot is *very* nice, as are the ones with the kevlar and K-Bar.

Kevlar, handcuffs, loads of guns. What are you, man? Is all that gear somehow related to your job or are you just a happy camper in America? :)

I have only 1 rifle. I found the handcuffs in the basement. That's not kevlar, that's just a tactical vest. Not bulletproof. I will buy an AK-74 soon, maybe soft trauma plates and the helmet, though. I just like to spend money on these things. I don't smoke, I don't drink, I don't spend money on travelling neither, I just collect these things for fun. 8-)

Thanks for explanation. My knowledge of guns goes as far as action films and games. Been to a shooting range once, shot a Glock, a Beretta and some sort of Navy pump-action shotgun that nearly ripped my shoulder off.

I can totally see how it can become a hobby. Shooting is fun, and some modern guns are built so well it's like art. Definite collectible value in that, though not for me (scared of blowing my/someone's head off).

Nothing is bullet proof, man. It's bullet-resistant. Bullet proof is an advertising term. Don't forget the mots important part of owning an AR-15 is pimping the bitch out. Any plans for sexy new stocks/handguards, rails, optics?

My first purchase is going to be a nice (maybe milsurp) .22lr, and in terms of a handgun, probably a G19 or something else in 9mm. I'd live a nice 1911A1 or a glock 32 (.357 SiG), but bullets are expensive.
