The Halo thread

Still Mildly Glowing
What is you opinion on what may be best/worst game in the last decade. This series brought a lot of things(mutiplayer for consle players, mosty)that pretty much define this generation of games:First Person Shooters on consles. Before Halo, fps were on pc(wolfenstein and Doom comes to mind)So,what I want to know:what does Halo mean to NMA ? If you look at Halo's legacy, you can trace everything thats wrong and right with games today. http://darkzero.co.uk/game-articles/how-consoles-have-changed-fps-games/ this article is what sparked this thread. Edit:If no one cares about complaning about Halo then treat this as a "Discuss Halo and Halo like things"thread.Where you can post anything you want,as long as it's about Halo (the game) :D

Soloing Halo 2 on Heroic will always be a pretty memorable gaming experience for me. I'm tempted to say Halo 2 had the best campaign and multiplayer experience and the AI really being the primary reason. Flanking, suppressive fire, using squad tactics, and a slew of other things made it so you had to really plan combat on higher difficulties. Strong AI also resulted in NPC squadmates that were actually useful, and not just at shooting! I was amazed at how good the AI was at driving warthogs while I manned the turrets or rode shotgun. But the moment that will always stick with me was an arbiter mission when I just finished a firefight. When an allied elite passed a dead allied elite and kneeled down and prayed before joining the rest of us at the door. It wasn't scripted and it wouldn't have happened in the battle and it captured the moment perfectly.

Awsome man although I don't remeber NPC's being good drivers! In fact I swear to to this day I saw a warthog going down the highway of the level Outskirts backwards!

Well at some point I bought an Xbox360 to play the Halo games (a decision about which I still wonder if I was out of my fucking mind).
Bought and played Halo 2, Halo 3, Halo ODST, Halo Reach, and Halo Wars, and I will probably get Halo Anniversary Edition and Halo 4.

Not so much that I think that the series is the best FPS series ever, there is no single game on my list but the Half Life series and the original Deus Ex are competing for that position, but there are barely any science fiction themed FPS games these days so I sort of take what I can get.

Oh, Star Trek Voyager Elite Force, Jedi Knight Outcast, and Jedi Academy were enjoyable as well but they are based on other franchises.

To any Spartans who can hear this,my Gamertag is DeliciousSmile, I need help making a Halo 2 themed map.You must have a very good memory of Halo 2 campaign, mostly the outskirts level(hotel Zanzibar) if you remember anything about that level message me. @Dutch Ghost:why would you be out of your mind for buying a 360 ? not like the pc is suddenly got a influx of new games.

Haven't played Reach but I loved the first three games. The series is definitely easy to hate and it did introduce some things that I wish stayed with it but a lot of hate is undeserved, I think.

The AI is one of the best, if not the best, ever created in a video game. Even though the Covenant got increasingly silly, it always felt like fighting real living things, not only because of random and consistently appropriate things they said but also because of how unpredictable they could be (yet still appropriate to the situations).

As far as consoles FPS go, I can't think of another game that does everything so well in terms of gameplay as well.

My only real complaint with the series is that Bungie never really took it all the way with the story. The setting, the epic scale, and the whole Halo mythos is nothing amazing but it all has a lot of potential. I think it could really be the Star Wars of video games if only they upped the drama like they did in Halo 2. The other sequels were always almost there but not quite, which is a damn shame. For this reason, I'm almost glad that 343 took over.

Anniversary looks badass by the way.

I did play Halo & Halo 2. They were good games, but I wouldn't go that far to call them 'Best FPS of the past Decade'.

A campaign (I have been spelling it wrong,my bad)is the single player story. They just call it campaign for some reason.Only when you play FPS would you ever hear this.(Come to think of it,when did this campaign name start anyway ? Anyone ?)

He's just being pedantic about your mispelling.
Campaign comes from the military term used since time immemorial for an extended punch up.

I can't say I didn't enjoy Halo when it came out for PC, what, 10 years ago? It was a fun shooter, though my gaming standards differentiated a lot from today's, but recently I had a chance to play it again. It is still an enjoyable game, not the best FPS, certainly, but a fun one, with a good sci-fi setting.

Of the sequels I know little. I have played some bits of 2, and to this day I regret it being a Vista exclusive.
All other games are, unfortunately, console sequels, which I really regret. Not because of the games itself - the whole FPS experience, that is - but rather because of the story and its development. Like I've said, I really like the setting, and I think it is one of the best military sci-fi settings in video games, but since those games are console exclusives, I can't play them.
In short words, fuck them.

Other than that, I've read some comics, had an opportunity to read a book, but I've skipped it, and I've watched Halo anime, which was fairly interesting, albeit over-the-top at certain moments.

All in all, I regret this series became an console exclusive. Probably more than any other game. It certainly has its flaws, it certainly isn't the best FPS out there (be it in the last decade or eva!) and it has some stupid design decisions - but I love the appeal of it.

But, you know, what can you do...

I hate the Halo series with a passion. I do admit that they are good games with good points, but I can't even MAKE myself like the series. I find the story to be a dull "Aliens and Explosions!!" tale which has been done better in Halflife. Halo and it's popularity is partly due to the multiplayer which is pretty good for a console FPS, but nothing to a PC shooter.

Halo redefined a console genre, and I love shooter's, but I can't like Halo. It's as if deep down in my genes I must hate Halo ,and similar cash-cow clones such as Call Of Duty. I have played both series and admit they are moderately fun to play, but the sequels add very little to the formula and make the games loose it's appeal to me.

I understand I may be in a minority, but who gives a shit?

I understood, was just jokingly pointing out your ballistic approach to spelling and punctuation in that post. We do have a spellcheck function, you know ;)

As for campaigns, and its name, here is a clue as to what started this specific name for a 'long scale military strategy plan'. FPS'es SP tend to focus around a fictional one. The nomenclature also features in strategy games.

Even as a PC gaming enthusiast, I can never bring myself to criticise the Halo franchise seeing as I've been a Bungie fan from the very beginning with Marathon (however, I will say that every non-Bungie Halo title from here on out is fair game for me). The narrative and encounter design sort of dipped for me in 2 and 3, but then went back up in my book with ODST and Reach. Regardless, I had a hell of a time with the multiplayer.

Halo started as a cheap UT ripoff, and ended up killing fun in MP FPS as I knew it when I was growing up.

I thought it started as a rts and then as Apple's expensive killer project but I could be wrong. Either way, to each his own.

I love the series and I am probably in the minority but I actually have high hopes for the series now after 343 took over.

Hah yeah I remember when we PC kids talked about it with the Console kids about it as they mentioned the vehicles! the gaphics! THE AWESOMSHUN! while all we said was that we had that already 2 years ago with Unreal.

Not that I hate or love Halo. Its just a game like many others. I think what helped Halo is the fact that the console lacked any decent shooter for that time just as how they lack a decent RPG and that helped Oblivion there. Competition on the PC is much bigger when it comes to that kind of games. Particuilarly as you have many indepened developers and modifications doing either the same or even better gameplay.

I'm sorry dude, but that is incredibly annoying. I remember back in the days when Wooz blasted my ass for such netiquette issues, and in hindesight it has made me a better person. I think Wooz has gotten nicer or something.....

Absolutely hated everything about Halo. The PC port was even worse because of the locked narrow FOV that continues to plague modern games. The weapons were boring, the badguys are boring and easy, the levels are linear and empty with the same handful of assets repeated forever, vehicle controls are awful, sound design is ok, and the music is fairly amateurish considering how much praise it gets from idiots. Halo was a huge leap back from Unreal 1 and a barely acceptable followup to the likes of Goldeneye and Turok 2.
