The one Vault.

A. Seems too obvious. I mean its less dangerous and given the poison that makes unarmed less likely.

Sincerely,
The Vault Dweller

Yeah, I agree this choice was a little obvious. From now on I will try and keep choices more realistic and fluid. I will let a few more votes come in before I write up the next area, it looks pretty obvious which is going to win though. :)

Chapter 1: Leaving the Nest, part 9 – ‘Power over life.’

Tim stopped in the long grass a short way from the raised mounds which hid the pre war staging area beneath them, motioning to the troop of people following him to stop.

“Alright, here’s the plan. These things are fast and numerous, I figure the best way to wipe em’ out is to draw them into the open and into one spot, where we can surround them and blast them straight to hell. So, we’re going to move from mound to mound, set up a defensive line, and then draw them out towards us. All in favour?” Tim looked each one of his troop over, they seemed pretty able to handle themselves in this situation.

“Sounds good, let’s rock.” One of the troops said.

“Yeah, let’s kick some ass man, sounds like a plan.” The man who had been holding the stick said.

“Alright, but watch yourselves, these things can be pretty nasty if they get their teeth into you, the red stitches on my left leg should sever as testament to that, ok? Alright, let’s do it.”

Tim turned around, all of them were agreed on the course of action, and this meant that if anything went wrong he wouldn’t be the one with his ass in the pan. Tim pulled out his 9mm side arm, gripping the slide with his hand he slammed it back, cocking the pistol and loading the chamber. He began to walk forward, the rest of his troop following behind, all of them eager to get a piece of the action.

“Try to conserve your ammo, and hold the line, we don’t want anyone getting shot in the ass today.” Tim barked picking up the pace slightly.

They approached the first mound, Tim held up his hand signaling the gang to stop, all of them with their weapons ready and loaded came to a halt scanning the area for a target. Tim alone walked forward towards the mound slightly and leant forward, making sure he didn’t get too close or too far ahead so that he might be the one fishing a bullet out of his ass. He looked around; none of the little cretins were to be seen. He had an idea to draw them out, pure brilliance really considering the circumstances; he put his plan into action.

“AAAAAAAHHHHHHHH” He screamed as loud as he could, quickly retreating back to his position in the line of gunmen and women.

Two little green eyes appeared in the shadow of one of the broken windows, Tim’s heart rate increase slightly and he felt on edge, this was it. The first pair of eyes was quickly followed by another and another, slowly a pack of green eyes was staring at him and his followers, drawn by the screams which usually served as their dinner bell but would now serve as their execution drum. Steadily the row of green dots grew larger, as more and more of the rabbits were drawn to the commotion. Then one of the mutant rabbits broke into a run, coming straight at Tim and his gang, as soon as its mutated family saw it leaving the safety of the mound they broke into a run as well, a wave of about twenty mutant rabbits were now coming right at them.

There was a good twenty five meter gap between the row of potential rabbit food and the entrance to the mound which might serve as the dinner table for anyone or anything that got dragged back into it. The rabbits were fast and outnumbered their prey greatly, it wouldn’t take them long get from the dinner table to the, in their eyes, walking meal. There is one thing the wave of hungry rabbits didn’t take into account however, there prey were all armed with a 9mm semi automatic pistols. The shots rang out like the tune of a drum kit in a hurricane, the first wave of rabbits didn’t get past the ten meter mark, all of them being cut down in the volley of lead coming from Tim’s gang.

The commotion and smell of spilt blood soon drew more and more rabbits in; these were also then quickly cut down by the 9mm super sonic wall of lead death. Tim’s original plan of having to move from mound to mound soon went out the Vault door as the growing pile of bullet filled bloody meat drew in rabbits from all the other mounds. Wave after wave of rabbits were blown to pieces their blood slowly seeping into the dry dirt, the ones that were wounded were soon turned on by their following brethren who in turn received there free mail order 9mm.

After about five minuets and three reloads Tim was down to his last clip, which he slid into his side arm, this didn’t matter much though as the stream of suicidal albeit ignorant rabbits had died down into a few stragglers. He felt absolutely incredible, having such power over life gave him a buzz which scared him slightly but made him feel invincible. Tim held his fire as the last few rabbits emerged from the long grass and were picked off by his fellow gunslingers. Everything went quiet for a minuet; it looked as though the rabbits had run out of pistol fodder. The man who had been holding a stick, who was now stood beside Tim passed him three fresh clips of 9mm. Tim slid these into the now empty slots where he had kept his own and then bent down and picked up the empty clips from the floor, stuffing them into his pocket.

It was deadly quiet, no more rabbits were coming out, which meant they would have to go in and clean up whatever was left inside the unintentionally sub terrain base. A few cheers and shouts of victory came out of his party members, they had massacred the rabbits, but would they have so much luck underground where the battlefield would be more compact and the rabbits would have an advantage? Tim began to slowly walk forward, his team mates following him. Stepping over blood splattered bodies and treading on blood filled bullet holes in the ground Tim and Co approached the nearest mound.

One of the two women in the group turned on her torch and bent down slowly, her side arm in her other hand tracing the direction of the beam of light emanating from her torch.

“Looks like we got em’ all.” She said in a satisfied tone.

There was a momentary pause and everything seemed to go deadly quiet as she moved a little closer to the broken window which served the rabbits as a front door peering inside with her torch. There was a deep growl which lasted only a second before escalating into a full blown cry of anger, the sound was coupled with a large claw like paw swiping out of the darkness and striking the woman in the arm. Her gun was flung from her hand and she fell back a deep cut on the inside of her wrist. She kicked herself away from the half buried window as the paw kept on swiping at thin air, digging into the ground every now and then a fast rabid like panting coming from whatever else was attached to the claw as it desperately tried to make contact with the petrified woman again.

Everyone jumped back in shock, Tim raised his pistol as fast as he could but one of his comrades beat him too it, a shot rang out sending a small dust cloud into the air just where the paw had been, another shot rang out this time striking the paw dead on. The creature which the paw belonged too cried out in pain and retreated into the darkness, taking its injured paw with it, everything fell silent again other than the injured woman’s shouts of pain. One of the men in the group ran over and picked the woman up, pulling her to her feet, she was cradling her cut bleeding arm.

“Get her to the Doc.” Tim said, not taking his eyes off the window which the monster had spawned from.

The man who had picked her up supported her and began making his way with her back towards the base camp. Many thoughts ran through Tim’s head all at once, clearly this thing was much bigger than the rabbits they had encountered thus far; perhaps it was a mother or father rabbit? Perhaps it was a different creature all together? Was it still there, waiting just inside the window for the next poor bastard to stick his head in and look? Whatever it was it was up to Tim and his remaining counter parts to deal with it. Tim thought through possible courses of action he could take.

A) Back off, get more help and come back. (nothing gained / lost)
B) Rush the buried building, sliding in on his ass and hope to catch the creature by surprise, and then lay into it with his 9mm getting his buddies to follow him as fast as possible. (+ 1 Agility)
C) Lead his troops cautiously and slowly inside from another mound and work there way around from there. This way the creature won’t be able to ambush them in the same way if it is still inside that building. (+ 1 intelligence – 10 current hit points.)

Well there you have it, this one is a little bit shorter than usual but that’s because I intend to have more choices and less moments where there is only one real choice. Enjoy, feedback always welcome.

Awww, no flaming frag grenady death? Pity. Still, if you don't have the equiptment there isn't much you can do.

I'm gonna have to go with B, because i'm fed up with Tim being sensible. Lets have a full on wrestle :P

Maybe if we go back for help we can also pick up some grenades and extra ammo. I choose A.

C is smarter, B is more fun... hmmmmm...

I vote B, and take a torch or flare to throw in its face while you shoot. It has been sitting in the dark for awhile, a flash of light should blind it well.

Nice idea, but I think I should warn you the whole 'Frag grenades' idea has three minor problems with it;

1: Frag grenades are too dangerous, in the open area which they are fighting in there is no cover, its mostly flat grassland and in open areas the grenades would be highly ineffective, especially against small numerous enemies.

2: They cant throw nades into the hole, they want to salvage technology and see if they base is repairable not blow parts of it up.

3: They have no grenades, there only weapons at this point are 9mm pistols and five 9mm pipe rifles.

The "Go back and get help" option also has no character development bonus, although at this point its not really an issue (just means the character will develop more later on) it would be helpful to enhance the character as much as possible early on (so later on when we get into the deep stuff I know what kind of character I am working with. :)

i vote B, i really just want to see what this creature looks like besides its arm/claw

Well, I suppose I too will choose B.

I do hope that he has some plan about getting in there. (like throw in a flare first before jumping into the darkness so that he can see what all is in there. Who knows how many of those creatures are just sitting there.)

I want to choose C since thats probably what I would do, but most people are alot more fast to react and I bet Tim would be enraged by the attack he'd simply run in screaming and shooting.

B.

I love your story.

Sincerely,
The Vault Dweller

B is the winner, writing up the next section now.

Thanks for the comments all of you, I am glad you like the story so much 'The Vault Dweller'.

Chapter 1: Leaving the Nest, part 10 – ‘This isn’t wonder land!’

Tim came to a conclusion and formulated a plan, checking his pistol quickly he gestured for the rest of his gang to gather around him. They promptly did so, none of them really taking their eyes off the hole which the claw had swiped from.
“Alright, anyone got any flares?” Tim asked, his mind working over time on the task he had lined up for himself, and how he would be pulling it off.

“Yeah, I have a pack.” The remaining woman said, reaching into one of her pockets and pulling out a six pack of flares.

“Me too, I picked up a pack.” One of the men standing left of Tim said, he too retrieving a six pack of clipped in flares from his person.

Tim took the pack of flares from the woman and slid them into his belt, putting his hand up to the second pack being held up from the man next to him.

“Keep hold of them, I have a plan.” Tim said taking a cautious look at the dangerous hole and then kneeling down.

Tim drew an outline of the building in the dirt between his feet and marked the window on it, using the crude diagram to explain his plan.

“Alright, you lot stay here in front of the window, on my signal throw a two flares through the broken windows here and here. That should light up the room, I will have moved around the back and once the flares are inside I rush in from the back and take whatever it is by surprise, hopefully if its not looking I should be able to blow its damn head off before it realizes what’s going on. Alright?” Tim said looking up at his companions.

All of them were nodding; they all appeared to be in a state of disbelief at Tim’s risky plan. Tim knew what he was letting himself in for however, he was angry about one of the people who were basically his responsibility being hurt. Whatever this thing was he intended to see how long it would survive with a full clip of 9mm being pumped into its body. It was time to clean out the shit from the stables.

Tim made his way around the building as quietly as possible, unfortunately the exposed windows on this side of the building weren’t so uncovered and Tim realized he would have to slide in if he was to make it inside quickly. Tim gave the hand signal to the others, they moved forward as a group trying not to get too close to the hole, lighting two flares they threw them into the open windows. Tim sprinted forward still trying to stay as quiet as possible, as he approached the window he slowed down considerably and then let his feet slip out from under him, he fell to his back at just the right moment and slid, on his ass, into the window.

Once inside Tim’s eyes darted around for any sign of the beast, the two flares on the floor lighting the room for him. It was a relatively small room, with light beaming in from all the broken and exposed windows, the whole place was silent and nothing moved apart from Tim’s arm as he aimed his gun around the room looking for his target. You couldn’t see the floor, this was because of all the dirt that had fallen in over time and all the rabbit shit that covered the area, the walls were partly exposed from about a quarter of the way up except in one side where they appeared to be completely exposed. The walls themselves were completely flat and appeared to be made out of age old steel plating riveted into the wall.

Tim was gripping his 9mm pistol tight, his eyes darting around the room looking for any sign of the monster that had cut up the member of his party. He saw movement from the corner of his eye, still lying on his back he aimed his pistol and gripped the trigger tight, a touch harder and the gun would go off. Dirt and rocks fell down the short slope which started at one of the windows, suddenly there was a light in his eyes, he covered his eyes with his free arm and squinted, desperately trying to make out what it was.

“Hey, did you see it?” A voice came from the light.

The torch beam pointed down to the floor out of his eyes and Tim got a look at what the movement was; his companions were climbing down the slope through the windows, following him into the underground room. Tim felt more annoyed that it had not been the creature rather than relived that it was his companions. As they group climbed down into the underground room Tim pulled himself to his feet. All the additional torch light meant he could now get a proper look around the room.

There were various computers and wall mounted screen, all of them were smashed to pieces, leaving only the metal shell. Someone had been down here and ripped out anything of value, it was clear now that this room had been thoroughly scavenged and nothing of any value remained. The wall which was most exposed had a doorway in it, the door was open and a dark passage delved deeper into the underground base below.

“Well did you see it?” One of the men asked.

“No, it must have scarpered through that open door there.” Tim replied pointing towards the open doorway.

“Man, look at all this pre war tech… barley anything left though. Looks almost as if someone’s been here before and ripped out all of the components worth anything, shit anything that isn’t missing is smashed beyond repair.” The woman of the party observed.

“Alright, we can stop for sight seeing once we have killed whatever the fuck lives here, ok?” Tim said.

The group fell quiet and concentrated on the task at hand. Tim pulled his torch from his belt and walked towards the dark open doorway. Flicking the torch on and pointing it down the two meter wide hall he stepped through the doorway, his group following closely behind. This hallway was much darker than the room before hand, it had no windows and the floor was mostly clear, other than the sparse coating of rabbit dung. After a short walk Tim came across a metal door, the door’s knob and lock had been cut away crudely with some sort of blowtorch or cutting flame, the cuts looked relatively fresh. Pushing the cut open door to one side Tim stepped through. The hallway they had just walked down broke off into a T junction, Tim peered around each corner making sure nothing was waiting and then stepped into the joint of the T junction.

The junction was much wider than the corridor they had used to get to it, light fixtures were hanging down in places, their wires exposed and severed. There were no doors within sight other than a thick heavy security door directly opposite the corridor they had just walked down. The door looked dominating and Tim could make out where someone had tried to cut through the large bolting system that held it shut. There was slight discoloration where someone had used a cutting torch to get past the door, but to no avail. The door had an electric locking system and with the power out this meant the door was locked closed, and by the look of it there wasn’t any way of getting past without restoring power to it. Clearly someone had spent quite some time trying to cut the doors locks off but they had met with little success, the door appeared to have resisted every attempt.

Approaching the door and examining it Tim noticed a dust coated sign fixed on the wall to the left of it. Brushing away some of the dirt with his head he read the sign.

Backup Power Generator. *Arrow pointing right*
Computer Core. *Arrow pointing left*
Machine shop *Arrow pointing right*
Armoury *Arrow pointing left*

Tim was faced with one of life’s greatest questions; Left or Right. Tim pondered his options for a moment.

A) Head left.
B) Head right
C) Split up, sending half the men each way.

Choice is yours. Feedback always welcome. :)

Sorry if this chapter isn't as good as the others, I am really ill at the moment. My arm has swollen up and I feel sick, hopefully it didnt ruin my concentration so much.

Don't worry, this chapter is every bit as good as the rest. Feel better soon!

I'd love to get our hands on some heavier firepower, but we can't risk this critter coming up behind us and splitting up is a bad idea. I vote for D.

D. Throughout the entire chapter I've been wondering where the critter is... please, vote for D and I will sell your soul to the devil! I mean... ah, nevermind...

Yeah, D sounds good. After that we can then scout around the others areas you mentioned.

Yes D.

Seems a bit simple. Perhaps though they may fight the creature they'll be at a disadvantage finding it big whereas if they went to the armory first they'd be better armed, but more likely to be snuck up on.

Though if the armory is accessible its probably looted clean unless it had an electic door in which case the power needs to be restored first.

Sincerely,
The Vault Dweller

I'm thinking that this creature doesn't like the light at all, so it'd be at a serve disadvantage if you got the power back on. But then i think that if it doesn't have a strong enough lock the generator would be useless or stolen. But still, Power would be a damn good idea. And i want to know what is behind that bloody door!
So ... B, right please!

Sorry to the people who voted D, because I have just removed that option to make it more interesting :)

Tracking the crature would be hard in an pitch black sub terrainian building. Also, this means people have to choose which way to go, rather than take the 'easy' option of following the creature. :)

In short: Anyone who voted D could you please vote again ;D
