Chapter 1: Leaving the Nest, part 10 – ‘This isn’t wonder land!’
Tim came to a conclusion and formulated a plan, checking his pistol quickly he gestured for the rest of his gang to gather around him. They promptly did so, none of them really taking their eyes off the hole which the claw had swiped from.
“Alright, anyone got any flares?” Tim asked, his mind working over time on the task he had lined up for himself, and how he would be pulling it off.
“Yeah, I have a pack.” The remaining woman said, reaching into one of her pockets and pulling out a six pack of flares.
“Me too, I picked up a pack.” One of the men standing left of Tim said, he too retrieving a six pack of clipped in flares from his person.
Tim took the pack of flares from the woman and slid them into his belt, putting his hand up to the second pack being held up from the man next to him.
“Keep hold of them, I have a plan.” Tim said taking a cautious look at the dangerous hole and then kneeling down.
Tim drew an outline of the building in the dirt between his feet and marked the window on it, using the crude diagram to explain his plan.
“Alright, you lot stay here in front of the window, on my signal throw a two flares through the broken windows here and here. That should light up the room, I will have moved around the back and once the flares are inside I rush in from the back and take whatever it is by surprise, hopefully if its not looking I should be able to blow its damn head off before it realizes what’s going on. Alright?” Tim said looking up at his companions.
All of them were nodding; they all appeared to be in a state of disbelief at Tim’s risky plan. Tim knew what he was letting himself in for however, he was angry about one of the people who were basically his responsibility being hurt. Whatever this thing was he intended to see how long it would survive with a full clip of 9mm being pumped into its body. It was time to clean out the shit from the stables.
Tim made his way around the building as quietly as possible, unfortunately the exposed windows on this side of the building weren’t so uncovered and Tim realized he would have to slide in if he was to make it inside quickly. Tim gave the hand signal to the others, they moved forward as a group trying not to get too close to the hole, lighting two flares they threw them into the open windows. Tim sprinted forward still trying to stay as quiet as possible, as he approached the window he slowed down considerably and then let his feet slip out from under him, he fell to his back at just the right moment and slid, on his ass, into the window.
Once inside Tim’s eyes darted around for any sign of the beast, the two flares on the floor lighting the room for him. It was a relatively small room, with light beaming in from all the broken and exposed windows, the whole place was silent and nothing moved apart from Tim’s arm as he aimed his gun around the room looking for his target. You couldn’t see the floor, this was because of all the dirt that had fallen in over time and all the rabbit shit that covered the area, the walls were partly exposed from about a quarter of the way up except in one side where they appeared to be completely exposed. The walls themselves were completely flat and appeared to be made out of age old steel plating riveted into the wall.
Tim was gripping his 9mm pistol tight, his eyes darting around the room looking for any sign of the monster that had cut up the member of his party. He saw movement from the corner of his eye, still lying on his back he aimed his pistol and gripped the trigger tight, a touch harder and the gun would go off. Dirt and rocks fell down the short slope which started at one of the windows, suddenly there was a light in his eyes, he covered his eyes with his free arm and squinted, desperately trying to make out what it was.
“Hey, did you see it?” A voice came from the light.
The torch beam pointed down to the floor out of his eyes and Tim got a look at what the movement was; his companions were climbing down the slope through the windows, following him into the underground room. Tim felt more annoyed that it had not been the creature rather than relived that it was his companions. As they group climbed down into the underground room Tim pulled himself to his feet. All the additional torch light meant he could now get a proper look around the room.
There were various computers and wall mounted screen, all of them were smashed to pieces, leaving only the metal shell. Someone had been down here and ripped out anything of value, it was clear now that this room had been thoroughly scavenged and nothing of any value remained. The wall which was most exposed had a doorway in it, the door was open and a dark passage delved deeper into the underground base below.
“Well did you see it?” One of the men asked.
“No, it must have scarpered through that open door there.” Tim replied pointing towards the open doorway.
“Man, look at all this pre war tech… barley anything left though. Looks almost as if someone’s been here before and ripped out all of the components worth anything, shit anything that isn’t missing is smashed beyond repair.” The woman of the party observed.
“Alright, we can stop for sight seeing once we have killed whatever the fuck lives here, ok?” Tim said.
The group fell quiet and concentrated on the task at hand. Tim pulled his torch from his belt and walked towards the dark open doorway. Flicking the torch on and pointing it down the two meter wide hall he stepped through the doorway, his group following closely behind. This hallway was much darker than the room before hand, it had no windows and the floor was mostly clear, other than the sparse coating of rabbit dung. After a short walk Tim came across a metal door, the door’s knob and lock had been cut away crudely with some sort of blowtorch or cutting flame, the cuts looked relatively fresh. Pushing the cut open door to one side Tim stepped through. The hallway they had just walked down broke off into a T junction, Tim peered around each corner making sure nothing was waiting and then stepped into the joint of the T junction.
The junction was much wider than the corridor they had used to get to it, light fixtures were hanging down in places, their wires exposed and severed. There were no doors within sight other than a thick heavy security door directly opposite the corridor they had just walked down. The door looked dominating and Tim could make out where someone had tried to cut through the large bolting system that held it shut. There was slight discoloration where someone had used a cutting torch to get past the door, but to no avail. The door had an electric locking system and with the power out this meant the door was locked closed, and by the look of it there wasn’t any way of getting past without restoring power to it. Clearly someone had spent quite some time trying to cut the doors locks off but they had met with little success, the door appeared to have resisted every attempt.
Approaching the door and examining it Tim noticed a dust coated sign fixed on the wall to the left of it. Brushing away some of the dirt with his head he read the sign.

Tim was faced with one of life’s greatest questions; Left or Right. Tim pondered his options for a moment.
A) Head left.
B) Head right
C) Split up, sending half the men each way.
Choice is yours. Feedback always welcome.
