The Perfect Fallout...

MrCaleb

First time out of the vault
Just maybe a short and simple question.

Now that Fallout 3 is here, and some are happy, some are sad...and some are ready to jump off a building.

I was wondering what your perfect fallout actually looks like? Should it be 3D (First person) ? Should it be like the old fallouts? Maybe with better graphics, highres textures etc?

I think Fallout 3 just doesn't have the feeling i was hoping for, its feels crammed up, small. No right atmosphere.

Perhaps i would have rather seen large area's with exit grids in 3D (1st person) then just a lumpy area that feels way to small to be a part of america.

Just wondering for thoughts, perhaps even a good way to brainstorm for mods. :ok:

2D isometric, tile based, destroyable terrain, works on my computer. Good game art.
Game mechanics similar to GURPS or JA2.

I don't care about graphics engine... 2D* or 3D... As long this isn't freaking FP(S) shitty shit! TB combat would be nice, but I could even accept RTwP, but not FPP - I HATE this crap, really.

* with freaking AA, 1280x1024 and layered sprites! :o

The perfect Fallout for me would be F3 with some changes. First, I'd like to go back to the West coast. Make the game big and random like Daggerfall and Arcanum were. Then, you can really be all alone in the HUGE expanse of Desert. Give me my highwayman back, so I can just cruise in realtime around miles and miles of nothing, and soak in the atmosphere. I can still fast travel to important locations if I like, but the option to explore should be there. Also, I like F3 consolidation of skills, but I don't like the way certain things are handled as opposed to the first games. I want my TAG skills to mean something again. I want my SPECIAL attributes to mean more than which skills get boosts.

Nice comments :)

I'v played Far Cry 2 as well, and damn i'd rather have that engine then this one. I mean Far Cry 2 has some real cool animation and landscapes.

But yeah..Van Buren shaped up and completed would have been great.....

Look at Blizzard and Diablo 3 :) They stick to the formula!

Troika's PA tech demo is looking very impressive. It's a damn shame that they went under before finishing this game :( Even damn music in tech demo is much more better than this orchestral crap from Fallout 3.

Anyway, PA RPGs have no luck... Troika's PA title, The Fall - Last Days of Gaia and now Fallout 3... It's damn unfair :?

The perfect Fallout would've been like this:

Camera: 3D Freecam ISO-ish

Combat: Strategic turn-based combat, with Jagged Alliance's levels of strategy. Interaction with objects and the enviroment would be important in combat.

Game Area: Somewhere closer to Cali. Van Buren's area was a good pick. The Pacific Northwest would be a excellent choice. Other future areas could be Texas or southern Canada. Eventually, we could see the future games going either to Alaska or to New York and Washington DC. The game area would be big and desolated.

SPECIAL: Van Buren's special and enhanced variants. Less emphasis on simple combat, more enphasis in strategy and non-combat skills. Less Skill Point perks and more perks that actually do something good.

NPCs: Fallout 2 NPC's were good - smarter, stronger, actually helpful and had notable personalities that I remember to this day - but could be even better and more notable. Also, please put then all in the early game.

Two words: Van Buren (updated with Fo3's graphics).
Van Buren's graphics were (are) perfect for an isometric game, I wouldn't have changed anything.
Man, since the release of that techdemo, tears drop from my eyes when I hear "Van Buren". :( THAT'd have been the perfect sequel.

Totally. NMA put a vid of the techdemo on YouTube and added a nice song to it which makes me wanna burst into tears even more.

But yeah: that Troika engine demo had the perfect atmosphere as well, in a totally different way (Van Buren - Troika post-apoc demo).
I would have loved to see both, actually.

a top down camera system that was free to be moved with a return to form action point based combat system. However I would NOT mind the ability to zoom in to the level that FO3 lets you do with its 3rd person camera (which controls like garbage) to allow you to view detailed objects and explore nooks and crannies similar to how you can in FO3.

I also would like the return of text descriptions to make up for your lack of senses (smell/taste/touch) that don't work in-game. Sure you can LOOK at a bed and see its charred but you can't smell the burnt flesh clinging to it, or feel that its still warm from the fire that went out recently.

I agree with the text descriptions. Its sad those are gone, always funny and very detailed, made the world a lot more alive.

I F3 i most of the times dont even know what i'm holding, specially with weapons would have been great to read what it was etc..

The lamest thing about Van Buren is the setting. They should've gone to a different place in the continent. Hell even Arizona/New Mexico or Baja would be more interesting.

Where you think Van Buren was? Van Buren took place in New Mexico/Arizona/Parts of Nevada/Utah/Colorado. Heck, you could even visit Hoover Dam, Denver, Boulder and Los Alamos (Reservation).

Oh. I thought it was more of Cali. I would have liked to see some originality in a North American game and have some of it take place in Mexico, too. No targets were nuked there I assume.

Witcher style over the shoulder.

When combat starts, zooms out and a semitransparent hex grid shows up

Van Buren engine would have been great, maybe not today but 5 years ago. You could obviously update it in that time though.
But not the story, anything but the story.

Mormon's, mummies, and mad scientists? No. Just no.
