The Positive Thread

the concept art of the docklands and the whitehouse look incredible. If I can scale the broken buildings and then look over the entire city as the sun goes down..wow, it will really be something. I think flares and nightvision perk will actually be of some use too. Actually I'm a bit frightened to think of Fallout at night in that dock area...

one thing that pisses me off

I probably wont ever get to review fallout 3. Nexgen means people that dont have thousands of dollars get shat on. I have a pretty good computer, its not a geforce 8800 but its a good computer. I never wanted fallout to have graphics like crysis or anything like crysis. If you play Half life 2 you can see that it has a very good combination of great game play and great graphics. Valve finds a way to create something in the middle; so people with powerful computers can see how nice the game looks at its fullest, and for those who dont have thousands of dollars to spend on computers each year. The game runs good on my old computer that had 384 MB of rd-ram(ddr 2700 equivalent), a 128 MB video card (geforce 5700), and a 1.3 GHz CPU(Pentium 4). Currently I have a dual core athlon x2 with 1 gig of ddr 400, and a geforce 8600gts(just as good as a 7900 but supports direct x 10). The one thing that seems to be the only thing remotely good was the graphics. The rest of fallout 3 is garbage(or seems to be). If they released fallout 3 as a fallout 2 mod if be even more happy. But after seeing oblivion I dont think they will keep people like me in mind and I wont get to play fallout 3 without hiccups and glitches because my computer didn't cost 3000 dollars to build. Am I going to be able to play fallout 3 in non "half ass-ed" mode where I can "enjoy" what all those posers want to enjoy? I doubt it. Or are they going to be smart and do what Valve does when they release a game? You have to admit, half life 2 looks and feels very good in all aspects. If you dont like half life 2; I'm sorry, I thought it was a very great game and had a compelling story that just kept asking me for more. What about quake 4? I know its not the best game but it runs good on a great range of PCs and it looks very nice. I'm no way shape or form a next gen poser who sees good graphics as a great game. But if fallout 3 is next gen, will I be able to play it so I can at least say I played it before I give it a: Failed fallout 3?

All I want from Fallout 3 is the same freedom that I had in 1 and 2. Being able to kill, have sex, abuse every living thing on this god given Earth. :) And! Let's not forget the awesomely awesome storyline along with the great gameplay and all that jargon mumbo jumbo. It looks like it has some pretty sweet graphics, so that's good.

Example from Oblivion...

I just want to be able to freely and at will (And this is just a shining example of my sickness) pull out my shining sword that will be the bloodletting of the town. Run around and chop widly into the calm air with a seething maniacal look on my face that screams horror from every living orifice, and proceed to slice meat from bone and scrape the bone in the process. I just love the way that grinding sickening scraping flows through my sword and into my own limbs and feeling that raw power surge through my blood. I turn around and guards are standing there ready to take my fiendish hide out. So I run at them in a full blood frenzy, my sword high in the air, my face pelted by the wind rushing across it, and my feet smacking the ground as I rush headlong into sure doom- oh sorry I'm getting way to into this. :P

So you like to kill things?

positives....... I honestly believe that FO3 creators are trying to make a successful game(would their aim be anything else?). Which has nothing to do with its likeness or lack thereof, of Fallout. In the very least we may end up with a fun game, it can never be true Fallout though. However I hope they prove me wrong, in fact nothing would make me happier. :P

I am hoping for the ability to take over an old abandoned Vault...you could sort of do that on Fallout 2...except this time you'll have that cool Bethesda feature, of being able to pick stuff up with the bumper and sit it somewhere. If they do manage to get the atmosphere right, stuff like that will keep the game playable for me. It will satiate my collector side. Restoring an old Vault with equipment and using it as a base of operations. That or being able to have an old gas station in the middle of the desert, and use that as a base of op's.

Maybe my optomism for this game is overriding my enraged sense of rejection from Bethesda...enraged, hard, red, throbbing, and painful.

Oh and Diablo, your band is pretty awesome! And you are pretty...pretty! Lmao.

I'm pretty sure that if the game does not have these options? Someone will make a mod for it. Bethesda makes all of their games easy to mod and gamers/modders love to take the time to make quality mods.

I downloaded a mod for oblivion where i could dismember people. The game would slow down to matrix time and you could chop off peoples' heads and limbs. It also added a shield bash button and you were able to dodge in 3rd person view. It was an awesome mod, and I'm sure many sweet mods will be made for Fallout 3.

So far we don't have that many things we actually know enough about to comment on.

So far the Q/A has left me with mixed feelings, but more generally positive than negative. And the graphics are something I like. It looks more Post-Apoc to me. Nuclear weapons are no where near destructive enough to get rid of all vegetation over an area several thousand square miles in size, let alone buildings; so having ruined, scorched, and partially destroyed buildings/frameworks helps me with immersion.

I've already posted my piece a while back about wanting phase-based combat and it looks like they might just do something similar to that. That said the notion that you can't use items: like a quick slot or reload, during the queue up phase irks me, and will probably make combat harder for people with slower reflexes, but perhaps they will add something like the aforementioned features in.

If the weapon modifications allow me to look through my scope, then I will consider that a plus. Serious bonus points if I can reveal my position and see the horrified look on their faces as the realization that they are about to die sinks in.

But far as story elements go, we are just going to have to be patient and wait and see for more.

I like Fallout 3 because it shows how pathetic Bethesda and gaming press is. Also, it allows to separate true Fallout fans from posers.

A good example of the "No True Scotsman" fallacy.

You posted in a 4 months old thread to point out that Sorrow sometimes makes fallacies? We know this.

I'm sorry, it's my first time finding these boards. Is it uncouth to post in old threads? I didn't notice anything about it in any of the posting guidelines.

I think that the attitude represented by that post is rather prevalent and should be pointed out when possible, too.

No true moderator would have called me out on it.

/hopefully humor is allowed.

As a rule of thumb, threads are considered "dead" after one month. They can still be bumped with new content or thoughts, just not to say "I disagree" or "lol" or "Equip the ring". You could for instance start a discussion on what's a reasonable definition of a Fallout fan, though it might fit better in the General Fallout forum.

Then I'll just apologize. Sorry, resurrecting old threads is a habit of mine; my most frequently posted board is a WWII history research site where posting in old threads is preferred to starting new ones, due to the technical limitations of the search function.

My apologies-- and, for the record, I think the question "What is a true Fallout fan" is simply "Anyone who liked Fallout for any reason".

I'll think carefully before resurrecting or posting a new thread.

That does seem to dilute the term for no good reason, though. Is anyone who likes Tetris a "Tetris fan"? In science fiction and football circles, where the term "fan" has been in use for a long time, it certainly denotes something much more specific than someone who reads science fiction or attends football games. Similarly, the "true" doesn't seem to fill any function in your statement, either. Granted, it's not clear what it would mean anyway, but still.

Well, Fan did come from "fanatic".

Is my sentence improved if I say, "Someone who liked Fallout better than any other game at the time, or at least on their top 10 list, for any reason?"

The point that I'm making is that when people talk about "True", they're mainly talking about people liking Fallout for "the right reasons", and that's what I'm trying to call bullshit on. I see it most often used to argue that, for example, the isometric view is a defining aspect of Fallout, or that turn-based is a defining aspect of Fallout.

I'm a fan, for example, of using real-time combat in X-Com Apocalypse, over the turn-based option. I'd probably be a fan of real-time in Fallout, too-- at least then perhaps I'd have a better chance of dodging my own teammates bullets.

There, I think I found my idea for my thread.

Sorry guys, I don't have time to chew threw the whole thread, so if I repeat something already said, I'm sorry.

What I like about Fallout 3? Well, the fact that it is. I mean, I know it will probably be worse (even much worse) then previous two, but I can't keep playing Fallout 1 and 2 ALL THE TIME. Besides, there are (I guess) new Vault Boy pictures and such and some freshness into the series. I mean, I can *hope* the game will be at least fun in some level and feel better about it. Of course I can get to "goddamnit I hate fucking nerds in the fucking Beth-fucking-esda", but there's no point doing that. Why? 'Cause they don't bother. They're like "game sells good - we're wonderful, we've ressurected Fallout 3. People complain about the lack of depth or atmosphere - who the fuck cares? We got shitloads of dough."

Anyway, as I said before, I'm happy at the time that the game will come out eventually, I'll leave my judgement until I play it. Unlike most people on this forum, I will try to be fair in my opinion, 'cause from what I've seen. many of you guys there forgot that making judgement on something that is not yet completed is not fair nor wise. Yes, I know Beth isn't fair too, because they ignore core-fanbase and are doing this whole thing wrong, but let's show them that we're better than them.

The December issue of Games for Windows had a nice little writeup and some screenshots, though a bit short. It's looking really good, I'm getting excited about this game, hopefully it will make the release date this year.

I know magazine articles and so forth aren't allowed to be reposted here, but if you get a chance, take a look at the article.

No matter how much of a disappoint Fallout 3 could be in comparison to Fallout 1 and 2 (I'm partial more to FO2), it can no where be as bad as Deus Ex 2 to Deus Ex 1. That still is one of the most depressing experiences ever. I'm got to enjoy it more a little over time, but I've just never bothered to finish it. The gameplay was decent, but so much of what made Deus Ex 1 great was gone (the streamlined bland and silly factions, the universal ammo, the short gameplay, and its lack of connection to the real world, and in-depth game world, all the news and background info about the world). Shows even how the original developers can screw up greatness.

Actually I'm playing Oblivion and its ok at the moment. Honeslty unless it was VB or developed by Trokia, it was never going to truly be Fallout. Heck at least Fallout is coming out in some form (thats an RPG and not something else. I followed Amen: The Awakening for nearly two years (with its great in world website) for it to just be canceled.

Granted Dues Ex strangely filled the void. I will miss the really dark sense of humor the games had (seriously the child killer tag, porn star, grave digger just awesome). No one seems to care about PC content vs Console Content. As a mutli-platform game, I always knew the content would suffer in a sense.
